A contractor can leave the company while an integration account retains access to customer records. A service can authenticate successfully yet request data beyond its assigned function. Identity and access management (IAM) is the discipline that makes those distinctions visible and corrects them throughout the life of an identity—not merely the technology behind a login screen.

The published CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 identity objective includes provisioning, deprovisioning, identity proofing, access models and authentication-related controls. This guide concentrates on the operational lifecycle: who creates an identity, who approves its entitlements, how changing job duties alter its access, and how the organization proves that access was actually removed. Federation protocols, authenticator strength and temporary administrator elevation are closely related, but have their own deeper technical decisions and are covered separately.

Follow an identity from request to closure

A joiner process should begin with an authoritative business event, such as a verified hiring record or an approved supplier engagement. The source may be an HR system for employees or a sponsor-driven onboarding system for contractors. It should establish a unique identity, the accountable manager or sponsor, the employment or contract status, and the requested access scope. An email asking an administrator to “copy the previous employee’s permissions” is not a durable entitlement policy. Without a validated request and clear owner, excessive access can become permanent on the first day.

Provisioning creates or enables a digital account and grants specific entitlements. A baseline set of permissions may be linked to job role, while unusually sensitive functions require explicit approval. The decision should include what resource can be reached, what actions are permitted, when the access ends and how it will be reviewed. An employee’s ability to authenticate is a separate fact from their authorization to approve refunds or query payroll records.

A mover changes job, department, project or location. A sound process grants the new role’s necessary privileges and removes privileges no longer justified by the old role. “Add new permissions now, remove old ones someday” accumulates privilege and allows access combinations that no single role intended. A leaver closes the relationship: disable accounts, revoke active sessions and authenticators where appropriate, recover issued assets, stop delegated integrations and verify that downstream applications no longer accept the identity.

Identity-lifecycle checkpoints and what must be verified

Stage

Business evidence

Security verification

Join

Approved sponsor, job function and identity source

Unique account; The 2025 NIST SP 800-63A-4 framework distinguishes identity resolution, validation of evidence and verification that the claimant is the person described by that evidence. It does not imply that every internal test account or workload identity requires the same real-person proofing process. The required assurance depends on risk, service purpose and organizational policy.

After proofing or appropriate account onboarding, the system creates a digital identity and binds authenticators according to its requirements. Successful authentication later proves selected control of those authenticators at that moment; it does not redo every identity-proofing step or establish a new business entitlement. An account can be correctly identified and strongly authenticated while its application role remains excessive. CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 scenarios become easier when proofing, enrollment, authentication and authorization remain separate decisions.

Worked case one: a transfer leaves conflicting financial permissions

A finance analyst moves into a purchasing role. In finance, the employee could create credit notes and approve selected refunds. Purchasing needs the employee to review suppliers and submit purchase orders, but it should not authorize payments to new bank accounts without a separate approver. The identity system receives the transfer notice and adds the purchasing role. Two weeks later an audit finds that the employee still has the original refund permissions as well as the new vendor-management entitlements. The employee has never failed an MFA check. What went wrong?

The immediate problem is permission accumulation, not weak authentication. The business role changed, but the workflow treated the event only as a join to new applications. A mover process must reconcile the entire set of effective grants against current duties, including inherited groups, manually assigned privileges, linked applications and temporary exceptions. Adding the right new group does not remove a direct privilege granted months earlier. If refund approval and vendor-bank changes are meant to be separated, the system needs an explicit incompatible-access rule rather than relying on managers to remember the restriction.

Start the investigation from the authoritative change event. Confirm the effective transfer date, the new manager’s requested activities and any legitimate transitional tasks. Review the permissions actually enforced in each application, not simply the central directory groups expected to carry them. A SaaS application may retain a local administrator role, a legacy system may synchronize nightly, and an API token might continue to work even after the interactive login is disabled. Those differences require a reconciled entitlement report and documented remediation, not a broad claim that the IAM portal shows the correct new role.

A defensible correction removes the obsolete refund grant, checks any active sessions or delegated authority it enabled, verifies the purchasing permissions are limited to approved duties and evaluates whether unauthorized transactions occurred during the overlap. The organization should record whether any separation-of-duties conflict existed, which owner approved the revised grant and how quickly downstream access was updated. If the employee is finishing an approved finance task, a narrow, time-limited exception with a named approver is better than silently retaining unrestricted finance access.

The same reasoning explains why a quarterly access review cannot substitute for a timely role-change trigger. A review may discover permissions months after a transfer; an event-driven mover control should initiate the change when the assignment changes. Periodic certification is a second check, aimed at entitlements that remain unjustified, drifted or orphaned. Both matter because business systems and identities may become temporarily inconsistent even when the main HR-to-directory integration works as designed.

Choose access-control models by who can decide

Role-based access control (RBAC) maps users or workloads to functions such as cashier, purchaser or security analyst. It scales well when duties are stable and clearly defined, but careless role design creates enormous groups with permissions that nobody can explain. Attribute-based access control (ABAC) evaluates subject, resource, action and contextual attributes—for example, a regional employee may inspect only assigned branch records, using an approved device and during an appropriate workflow. Attribute quality and policy enforcement are crucial: a policy depending on an outdated department attribute may make the wrong decision.

Discretionary access control (DAC) lets an authorized resource owner assign selected permissions under the system’s rules. Mandatory access control (MAC) relies on centrally enforced security labels or classifications rather than giving an ordinary file owner unrestricted freedom to waive the policy. Rule-based policies can enforce explicit conditions such as denying all administration from an untrusted network, and real systems may combine several models. The best answer depends on who defines the policy, what attributes are authoritative and where the requested action is evaluated.

A transfer scenario with conflicting finance and purchasing duties is not fixed merely by switching from RBAC to ABAC. Each model still needs correct business rules, real entitlement inventory and tested revocation. For Security+ questions, identify whether the task asks to assign rights to a job function, restrict a resource by classification, let an owner delegate rights, or evaluate current context. Do not confuse the mechanism for granting permission with the evidence that a person’s login succeeded.

Authentication, authorization and accounting have different owners

An authenticated identity has demonstrated control of acceptable credentials under a particular policy. That does not mean every resource request should succeed. Authorization evaluates what the identity may do to a specific object or service, while accounting and audit records describe what occurred, when and under which relevant principal. These functions work together, but they fail independently. An identity provider can report a successful login while an application grants access to another customer’s records because its object-ownership check is broken.

Strong authentication can reduce some credential-theft risk, but a stolen active session, an excessive application role or an incorrectly configured API remains a separate problem. NIST SP 800-63B-4 treats session lifetime and reauthentication as explicit security decisions. A successful event from the morning should not be interpreted as unconditional permission for sensitive actions all day. Session revocation, access-token validity and actual authorization checks need to be considered in the relying application. The companion federation, MFA and privileged-access guide details SAML/OIDC token validation, phishing-resistant authenticators and temporary elevation; this lifecycle article explains who should have those rights in the first place.

For useful accountability, events should connect a unique acting identity, an action, the target resource, a timestamp and the result. Logging every administrative login without recording a changed entitlement may miss the very event that creates risk. Conversely, collecting entire personal records in logs can introduce new access and retention problems. Build an audit trail whose content matches the controls it is meant to validate.

Least privilege depends on reliable entitlement ownership

Least privilege means giving a subject only the permissions justified by its current task and risk, not simply assigning the role that happens to sound closest to its job title. An application role might include read access to a region’s data, while a separate approval role can authorize changes only within a monetary limit. The organization needs a business owner who defines those boundaries and a technical owner who implements and tests them. A permission nobody can explain should be investigated, even when it has existed for years without generating an alert.

Excessive access can arrive indirectly through group nesting, inherited cloud policies, historic service accounts, shared API tokens or a one-time exception left in place. A review should reconcile effective application access, including transitive grants, against the approved entitlement policy. If the IAM dashboard lists one role but the application retains a separate local admin assignment, the access review has not yet described the real exposure. A good certification prompt may ask for the control that would detect or remove this discrepancy—not which authentication factor is strongest.

Access reviews should consider risk and ownership, not encourage managers to click “approve all.” High-impact privileges, users changing departments, inactive accounts, external contractors and service identities with broad scopes warrant closer evaluation. Record exceptions, the approving authority, rationale and end date. When a review revokes a permission, verify it is no longer usable in the target application; a closed review ticket alone does not establish that a long-lived session or token was invalidated.

Zero Trust changes when an authorization decision is revisited

A resource policy can consider verified identity, device posture, network context, sensitivity of the requested action and recent risk evidence. None of those attributes should be treated as permanent permission. Being on a corporate network does not mean a support analyst may download finance records, and a compliant laptop does not create missing business approval. The Zero Trust resource-access guide explains the policy decision and enforcement architecture in detail.

In identity-lifecycle operations, the implication is practical: changing the authoritative role or disabling a sponsor relationship must affect resource decisions, not merely directory labels. Teams should know how quickly changes propagate, which relying services cache roles, whether active sessions continue using old claims and how emergency revocation is triggered. The access policy is only as current as its inputs and enforcement path.

Worked case two: a retired integration retains production access

A company replaces a nightly customer-data import with a managed integration. The old service’s server is shut down, yet an inventory review finds that its service account still reads the customer database and retrieves secrets from a vault. The account’s API token was used from an unfamiliar workstation after the retirement date. The engineering team says the account is safe because “the application no longer runs.” What failed?

The identity lifecycle was never closed. Machine identities, application registrations, database permissions and issued credentials can survive their original compute resource. Before removing anything, establish the account’s owner, the remaining dependent services, current token scopes, where the secrets were used and what audit evidence exists. Preserve the events supporting the suspicious use, then restrict or invalidate affected credentials under incident procedures. Simply deleting the old server does not revoke valid tokens or a password copied to another system.

A sound decommissioning plan begins before workloads disappear. Inventory scheduled tasks, service accounts, certificates, API keys, vault permissions and downstream data access. Give a replacement service a separate least-privilege identity and test its required workflow. Then remove the old grants, invalidate or let expire obsolete credentials, monitor for further attempts and record verification that the previous principal is no longer accepted. A completed infrastructure ticket without these checks is not proof of credential removal.

Change one fact: the account still runs an emergency recovery job once a month. Retaining broad permanent access is not the only option. Define an accountable owner, a narrowly authorized recovery identity, controlled activation, monitoring and tested restoration. A credential needed for resilience can be protected without turning it into an unreviewed general-purpose administrator.

Workload identities have a lifecycle too

A non-human identity still needs an owner, a legitimate purpose and an approved set of actions. Modern platforms can issue short-lived workload credentials rather than embedding long-lived shared passwords in source code. Short validity limits some exposure, but it does not eliminate the need for access review, safe issuance, revocation and scope controls. An overly privileged short-lived token is still excessive during its usable lifetime.

Keep development and production identities separate, restrict vault retrieval to the intended workload and record meaningful service-to-service activity. Machine certificate or token verification can establish selected identity properties, but an application must still authorize the requested operation. Workload owners should review changing dependencies, rotate secrets when actually necessary, verify revoked permissions and plan recovery when identity infrastructure fails.

Deprovisioning must revoke effective access, not just hide an account

Terminating an account in the central directory may be necessary, but it does not guarantee that every relying service has stopped accepting the identity. Applications can cache role information, retain sessions or use a separate identity store. Access tokens and client credentials may have their own validity and revocation rules. After a contract ends, determine which active sessions, keys, local accounts, shared credentials and delegated application grants must be revoked or replaced. NIST SP 800-63B-4 addresses authenticator invalidation and session management, while the organization’s application policy must determine how those events propagate to protected resources.

A safe leaver workflow balances timely revocation with business continuity. Recover devices and credentials, transfer ownership of essential scheduled jobs, preserve required business records and revoke direct or indirect access to sensitive resources. Former employees should not retain personal access simply because the team forgot who owned a production integration. If a shared application secret must be replaced, identify the legitimate dependencies and test the new credential before removing the old one under a controlled change plan.

Proof should be operational. Test the affected user’s access in relevant target applications, inspect effective role grants and confirm that new authentication cannot establish an unauthorized session. For previously issued sessions, follow each application’s supported invalidation path and record limitations. An identity dashboard displaying “disabled” is one observation, not a substitute for a verified failed resource request.

Make access reviews a practical feedback mechanism

Periodic certification is strongest when the reviewer sees the actual entitlement, its owner, its purpose and last meaningful use. Ask whether the subject still performs the assigned role, whether the privilege is sensitive or incompatible with another right, and whether the grant expires at a known milestone. Avoid a mass “approve all” button that hides permissions nobody understands. An effective review can uncover orphaned non-human accounts, lingering contractor access, department transfers and unrecorded direct admin grants.

Useful IAM measures reflect exposure reduction rather than paperwork volume: elapsed time to remove access after a transfer, percentage of privileged grants with a named approver and expiration, number of service identities without ownership, and completeness of target-system revocation verification. If automation fails to synchronize an access change, log the failure, alert the owner and reconcile the target rather than silently declaring success. The Security Operations guide explains how those signals fit continuous monitoring and incident handling.

Approach Security+ IAM scenarios as lifecycle decisions

First identify the moment: identity proofing, enrollment, access grant, job transfer, periodic review, account compromise or final closure. Next identify the missing security property. Does the organization lack confidence in who the applicant is, proof that a subject controls an authenticator, a rule granting only needed access, or confirmation that a revoked identity cannot keep using the resource? An answer can sound secure and still address the wrong stage.

Return to the finance transfer scenario. A stronger password does not remove incompatible finance permissions. Return to the retired integration: deleting a virtual server does not invalidate copied credentials. For an externally sponsored contractor, an end date and sponsor review are valuable because business relationships change even when a technical account stays active. These are different failure modes tied together by an accountable identity lifecycle.

Practice by writing one sentence for each stage: who requests the identity, which evidence establishes its legitimacy, which owner approves access, what event changes the entitlement and what test shows the old permission has disappeared. That discipline turns IAM vocabulary into a defensible security decision without confusing every access problem with an MFA or SSO problem.
