AI-102 retired on June 30, 2026, while Microsoft AI-103 now measures a role built around Microsoft Foundry, generative AI, agents, multimodal workflows, information extraction, and the operational controls needed to run those systems. The transition is therefore better treated as a skills migration than as a simple exam-code change.

That distinction matters because many former AI-102 candidates have strong Azure AI foundations. They may already understand language, vision, search, document processing, SDK-based development, security, and deployment. The problem is not that those capabilities suddenly became irrelevant. The problem is that AI-103 asks candidates to combine them inside a newer operating model in which retrieval, agents, evaluation, safety, observability, and Foundry deployment patterns are much more central.

The most efficient preparation separates three kinds of knowledge: skills that still transfer directly, skills that remain useful but need current implementation practice, and capabilities that are materially new or much more important in AI-103. That is a stronger plan than restarting from zero or continuing to study Microsoft AI-102 as though the retired blueprint were still current.

AI-103 measures a broader application-engineering role

AI-103 is tied to the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate credential. The current blueprint places its largest emphasis on planning and managing Azure AI solutions and on implementing generative AI and agentic solutions. Computer vision, text analysis, and information extraction remain important, but they now sit inside a broader application architecture that expects candidates to reason about grounding, tools, memory, orchestration, security, deployment, and evaluation.

This changes the preparation question. Under AI-102, a candidate could often organize study around individual Azure AI capabilities: language, speech, vision, search, document intelligence, and generative AI. Under AI-103, the more useful question is, “How does this capability participate in a complete AI application?” A retrieval component, for example, is not merely a search feature. It has an ingestion path, an index, relevance behavior, permissions, grounding quality, cost, latency, observability, and a consumer such as an application or agent.

That architectural shift is the main reason experienced AI-102 candidates can feel simultaneously familiar with the services and underprepared for AI-103. The service vocabulary transfers faster than the systems-thinking required to connect the pieces.

A transfer matrix separates durable skills from current implementation gaps

A useful transition matrix separates concept transfer from current implementation readiness. A candidate may understand a concept extremely well and still need hands-on practice with the way AI-103 now expects it to be deployed, secured, evaluated, or operated.

Direct transfer means the underlying skill remains substantially useful and can be applied in current scenarios without translating from old terminology.

Transfer with adaptation means the concept remains valid, but the implementation must be rebuilt around Foundry, agents, current security patterns, or newer operational tooling.

New or materially expanded topics require deliberate study because they were absent, narrower, or much less important in AI-102 preparation.

Use evidence rather than confidence to assign those labels. “I remember Azure AI Search” is weak evidence. “I can design an ingestion and retrieval path, choose semantic, vector, or hybrid search appropriately, explain how permissions affect retrieval, and diagnose poor grounding quality” is much stronger.

Planning and managing Azure AI solutions: familiar Azure skills, broader operational responsibility

AI-102 candidates usually bring useful Azure instincts into this domain: choose services deliberately, secure access, understand endpoints and credentials, watch quotas, and think about deployment rather than only code. Those instincts transfer well. What changes is the range of decisions that now sit around an AI application.

AI-103 expects candidates to reason about model and service selection, deployment choices, Foundry projects, CI/CD integration, quotas, rate limits, scaling, cost, private networking, role policies, keyless credentials, monitoring, and responsible-AI controls. A candidate who previously treated the model call as the “AI part” now needs to see the entire delivery environment as part of the solution.

A good readiness test is to take one small generative application and describe how it moves from development to production. Where is the model deployed? How is the application authenticated? What belongs in configuration and what belongs in a secret store? How would private networking change the design? What happens when the model hits a rate limit? How would the team observe latency, failure, grounding quality, safety events, and cost? Those questions are the practical substance of Foundry deployment architecture.

Generative AI and agents are the largest transition zone

This is where the greatest AI-102-to-AI-103 gap usually appears. Generative AI itself is not new, but AI-103 gives much more weight to the architecture around it: retrieval, tool use, conversation state, agent roles, multi-agent orchestration, evaluation, safeguards, and production operation.

For retrieval-augmented generation, readiness means understanding more than embeddings and a vector index. You should be able to reason from ingestion through chunking, enrichment, indexing, retrieval, grounding, generation, and evaluation. You should also be able to distinguish a retrieval failure from a generation failure. A system that produces a confident but weak answer may have retrieved poor evidence, ranked good evidence badly, lost useful context, or generated beyond the evidence it received. The deeper RAG and grounding pipelines material is a useful benchmark for that level of reasoning.

Agents add another layer. An agent is not simply “a chatbot that can call tools.” You need to know what goal the agent owns, which tools it can invoke, what permissions those tools carry, what state or memory is retained, when human approval is required, and how errors are contained. For multi-agent systems, splitting work among agents should solve a real problem such as specialization, context isolation, or parallel work; more agents are not automatically a better design. If tool schemas, authority boundaries, handoffs, or orchestration still feel abstract, the gap is in agent orchestration and tool use, not in generic prompt design.

Search, multimodal work, and information extraction still reward AI-102 foundations

Some of the strongest transfer comes from areas that AI-102 already treated as core engineering work. Candidates who genuinely understood computer vision, language processing, search, speech, and document extraction are not starting again. They are adding newer multimodal and generative patterns around skills they already possess.

Search is a good example. Indexes, data sources, relevance, enrichment, and security remain meaningful, but AI-103 places them directly in grounding pipelines and agent tools. Candidates should be comfortable with semantic, vector, and hybrid retrieval and should understand that retrieval quality is measurable application behavior. A focused review of Azure AI Search and retrieval is therefore more useful than simply revisiting old search definitions.

Computer vision also expands beyond traditional analysis. The current scope includes multimodal understanding as well as image and video generation and editing. A candidate with strong vision fundamentals should ask whether those skills now extend to prompt-driven visual generation, visual question answering, accessibility-oriented descriptions, video analysis, and safety controls. The same pattern applies to information extraction: OCR and document understanding remain useful, but AI-103 expects clean, grounded representations that can feed downstream agents and RAG workflows.

For candidates with strong legacy vision skills, multimodal generation and understanding is a targeted gap check. It shows whether traditional vision knowledge has been extended to prompt-driven generation, multimodal reasoning, editing, and the associated safety controls rather than assumed to transfer unchanged.

Security, responsible AI, and observability must be treated as engineering work

One of the easiest transition mistakes is to treat safety and monitoring as theory learned after the application is built. AI-103 makes them part of the architecture.

Security questions can span managed identity, role assignments, private networking, keyless authentication, tool permissions, and secrets. Responsible-AI decisions can include content filtering, guardrails, safety evaluation, provenance, approval flows, and limits on agent autonomy. Observability extends beyond infrastructure health into traces, token usage, latency, safety signals, retrieval quality, and model or application behavior.

A useful diagnostic is to draw a complete request path and identify where each control belongs. Which identity calls the model? Which identity reaches the search index or business API? Where would an indirect prompt injection enter the system? Which actions require approval? What evidence would prove that retrieval quality deteriorated? What trace would show whether latency came from retrieval, a tool call, or generation?

If those questions are harder than selecting an Azure AI service, spend focused time on responsible AI and safety controls and monitoring and GenAIOps. They represent exactly the kind of operational depth that differentiates current readiness from legacy familiarity.

Readiness should be scored by evidence, not memory

For each major AI-103 area, create a small proof task. The task should force a decision or an implementation, not just a definition. For planning, design a secure Foundry deployment and justify the service choices. For generative AI, build or diagram a RAG path and explain how you would evaluate grounding. For agents, define tools, permissions, state, approval boundaries, and failure handling. For multimodal work, choose a workflow that combines generation or understanding with policy controls. For information extraction, show how content becomes a structured representation that can be searched or reasoned over.

Ready means you can complete the task and explain the trade-offs without relying on memorized wording.

Needs refresh means the concept is sound, but current Foundry implementation details or terminology still slow you down.

Needs rebuild means the topic is familiar but you cannot yet design or troubleshoot it confidently.

New means the capability was not part of your practical AI-102 experience.

Then score each task: This method prevents two opposite mistakes. Experienced candidates avoid wasting time relearning mature skills, while confident candidates avoid overlooking agentic and operational gaps that the old exam did not expose as strongly.

Once the gaps are visible, study in dependency order. Fix planning and security first because they affect every later solution. Then address retrieval and grounding, because agents often depend on reliable knowledge access. Add tool use, memory, and orchestration next. After that, work through multimodal and information-extraction gaps, and finish with evaluation, safety, monitoring, and troubleshooting across the complete application.

For each weak area, use a three-step cycle: review the current concept, build or diagram a realistic scenario, then explain why competing designs are weaker. That last step matters because certification questions often offer several technically possible answers. Readiness comes from recognizing the constraint that makes one choice better.

The transition from AI-102 to AI-103 is therefore not a reset. It is a modernization exercise. Keep the Azure AI engineering judgment you already earned, but prove that it works inside the current Foundry-and-agent operating model. When your old strengths survive that test and the new gaps have concrete evidence behind them, your preparation has genuinely moved from legacy familiarity to current AI-103 readiness.

AI-102 experience is still valuable, but it is no longer enough to define readiness for Microsoft’s current Azure AI credential.
