The purpose is not to prove that a diagram looks sophisticated. It is to find the assumptions that will become outages, security incidents, cost surprises, or operational bottlenecks when the workload is exposed to real demand.

Strong reviews are therefore built around trade-offs. Reliability usually costs money. Tighter security controls can add operational friction. Caching can improve performance while increasing the complexity of invalidation and access revocation. A managed service can remove infrastructure work while creating new service limits, data-location questions, or provider dependencies. A good architect makes those trade-offs explicit rather than hiding them behind product names.

The checklist below is best treated as a conversation framework. It asks whether the architecture can meet its actual business objectives, whether the failure modes are understood, and whether the team that will operate the system can do so safely.

Start with the workload requirements before reviewing the technology

An architecture cannot be judged without knowing what it is supposed to achieve. Before looking at regions, clusters, databases, or load balancers, establish the workload’s functional and nonfunctional requirements. How much downtime can the business tolerate? How quickly must data be recovered? What latency is acceptable? Which transactions are financially or legally critical? What data cannot leave a jurisdiction? What demand peaks are realistic rather than hypothetical?

This is where many reviews fail. Teams jump directly to high availability without defining an availability target, or they add multi-region complexity without deciding whether the business would actually pay for it. A review should translate broad requirements into measurable objectives: service-level indicators, recovery time and recovery point objectives, throughput or latency targets, security boundaries, and cost constraints.

The exact cloud provider can change; the habit of connecting a requirement to an architectural decision should not.

Reliability review means tracing failures, not counting redundant components

Reliability is more than deploying two copies of something. Review the architecture by asking what happens when a dependency fails, becomes slow, returns bad data, or becomes temporarily unreachable. Trace a user request through DNS, edge services, load balancing, compute, queues, databases, third-party APIs, and identity systems. At each step ask whether the component is a single point of failure, whether the application can degrade safely, and how recovery is triggered.

Failure domains matter. Multiple virtual machines in one failure zone do not provide the same protection as spreading capacity across independent zones. Multiple zones do not protect against every regional event. Multi-region designs can improve resilience, but they also introduce data-replication, routing, consistency, testing, and cost questions. The correct design follows the business recovery requirement rather than a reflex to maximize redundancy.

Review backup and restore separately from high availability. Replication can copy corruption or accidental deletion. A highly available database still needs tested recovery points, retention policies, and a documented restoration process. Ask when the last restore test occurred, how long it took, and whether the recovered application—not just the storage snapshot—was validated.

Security review should follow identities, data, and trust boundaries

A cloud security review becomes clearer when it follows three things: who can act, what data they can reach, and where trust boundaries change. Start with human administrators, application identities, CI/CD systems, service accounts, external partners, and break-glass access. Look for permissions that are broader than the job requires, long-lived credentials that could be replaced with short-lived identity, and privileged paths that are poorly monitored.

Next, trace sensitive data from ingestion through processing, storage, backups, logs, analytics, and deletion. Encryption is necessary, but a review should also cover key ownership, access to decryption operations, secret storage, certificate lifecycle, data classification, and the possibility that sensitive information is being copied into logs or observability systems.

Finally, inspect network and service trust boundaries. Public exposure should be intentional. Private connectivity is not automatically secure if identities are weak or authorization is missing. Security groups, network policies, web application protections, threat detection, and segmentation should support an explicit model of who is allowed to communicate with whom.

Performance review begins with workload shape and measurement

Performance cannot be reviewed effectively from theoretical peak specifications. The architecture team needs to understand the workload shape: steady traffic versus bursts, read-heavy versus write-heavy behavior, synchronous versus asynchronous work, hot versus cold data, large objects versus small transactions, and interactive latency versus background throughput.

Then check whether the design matches that shape. Caching may reduce repeated database reads, but it needs an invalidation strategy. Queues can smooth bursts and decouple components, but the team must know how backlog, retries, poison messages, and idempotency are handled. Autoscaling can add capacity, but only if the scaling signal appears early enough and the application can start instances or containers quickly enough to respond.

Performance efficiency also requires measurement. Review dashboards, load tests, percentile latency, saturation signals, database query behavior, connection pools, and resource limits. A design that has never been tested near expected peak load is still carrying an unverified assumption.

Cost review should expose the economics of the architecture

Cloud cost is an architectural property. A review should identify the major cost drivers and connect them to units of business activity. If traffic doubles, which costs double? Which remain fixed? What happens to data-transfer charges when regions or clouds exchange large volumes of data? Are idle environments running continuously? Are high-availability choices aligned with the value of the workload?

Look beyond compute prices. Storage tiers, snapshots, logs, managed database capacity, egress, load balancers, NAT or gateway services, observability ingestion, AI inference, and support can all become material. Unit economics are especially helpful: cost per customer, transaction, device, build, model request, or gigabyte processed makes architectural efficiency easier to reason about than one monthly total.

Cost review is not a demand to choose the cheapest component. A managed service can be more expensive per unit than raw infrastructure yet cheaper overall when operational labor, reliability, and time-to-market are considered.

Operational review asks whether the system can be changed safely

A system that performs well today can still be fragile if ordinary change is dangerous. Review how infrastructure is provisioned, how deployments are promoted, how configuration is controlled, how secrets enter the runtime, and how rollbacks work. Manual production changes should be treated as risk because they are difficult to reproduce, review, and audit.

Infrastructure as code, automated testing, deployment gates, and versioned configuration make the operating state easier to reason about. Observability should cover metrics, logs, traces, and meaningful business signals rather than creating a giant data lake of telemetry that nobody uses. Alerts should identify situations that require action; otherwise the team becomes trained to ignore noise.

Incident response is part of architecture. Ask whether the team can identify ownership, isolate a failing component, access the right dashboards, and communicate during an incident. Runbooks should describe decisions and recovery steps, not merely repeat console navigation.

Data architecture deserves its own review because mistakes become hard to reverse

Data decisions often outlive application components. Review whether the chosen database model fits the access pattern, consistency requirement, transaction boundaries, data volume, retention needs, and geographic distribution. A globally replicated database can solve availability problems while creating latency, consistency, and cost trade-offs. A document database can accelerate development but become awkward if the workload is fundamentally relational. A relational database can be ideal until one hot key, unbounded table, or poorly designed query becomes the bottleneck.

Check data ownership and lifecycle. Who is authoritative for a record? How is schema change managed? What happens when downstream analytics need historical versions? Can deleted customer data actually be removed from replicas and backups according to policy? If event streams drive multiple systems, how are duplicates, ordering, and replay handled?

This part of the review should also test portability assumptions. “We can move later” is not a plan unless the team understands what is portable—data formats, application code, network dependencies, identity integration, observability, and operational processes—and what is not.

A useful review ends with prioritized decisions, not a longer checklist

The output of an architecture review should be a short set of decisions and risks with owners. Some findings require immediate correction because they threaten confidentiality, integrity, availability, or recovery. Others can be accepted temporarily because the business impact is low or the cost of remediation is disproportionate. Recording that decision is better than leaving the risk implicit.

Separate confirmed issues from questions that need evidence. If the team does not know whether a database can meet peak demand, schedule a load test. If recovery time is uncertain, run a restore exercise. If permissions appear broad, inspect actual usage before redesigning roles. The review becomes valuable when uncertainty is converted into tests, measurements, and accountable decisions.

Cloud architecture frameworks from AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud use different terminology and pillar counts, but they converge on the same discipline: reliability, security, performance, cost, and operations must be considered together. A mature review does not maximize one dimension. It makes the trade-offs visible enough that engineering and business stakeholders can decide which risks they are willing to carry into production.

A cloud architecture review is most useful before a design has accumulated enough production traffic, operational history, and organizational dependence to make change expensive.
