They represent different client access models, different failure signals, and different administrative responsibilities inside ONTAP. NAS presents files and directories through protocols such as NFS and SMB. SAN presents block storage through LUNs carried over iSCSI or Fibre Channel. ONTAP can support both, but the path from client to data is not the same.

The live NetApp NS0-165 exam explicitly includes SAN solutions, NAS solutions, troubleshooting of both, and ONTAP S3 alongside core storage and networking. A candidate who can draw the access path for a file share and for a LUN will be better prepared than someone who memorizes protocol definitions without understanding where authorization, networking, multipathing, and storage objects enter the path.

NAS exposes a file namespace; SAN exposes blocks to a host

The first distinction is the unit the client consumes. NAS clients see files and directories managed by the storage system. The NAS server handles the file system and presents a namespace through NFS or SMB. SAN hosts see block devices. The host operating system or application places its own filesystem or data structures on the LUN.

That difference changes operational ownership. A NAS problem can involve export policy, share permissions, name services, file permissions, or namespace configuration. A SAN problem can involve initiator identity, LUN mapping, zoning, iSCSI sessions, multipath configuration, or host-side device discovery.

Both ultimately rely on ONTAP volumes and storage capacity, but “the data is in the same cluster” does not make the access path equivalent. Exam scenarios often become easier when you first classify them as file access or block access before looking at individual settings.

SVMs are the protocol boundary for both file and block services

ONTAP uses Storage Virtual Machines to organize client-facing services. An SVM can host NFS, SMB, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel configuration and can own the LIFs that carry those services. The SVM boundary separates client access from the physical node layout and lets administrators reason about a logical storage server.

For NAS, the SVM owns file-service configuration and the namespace clients use. For SAN, it owns the block protocol service and the LUN presentation context. In both cases, the client must reach the appropriate network endpoint and satisfy the relevant access policy.

This makes SVM scope one of the first things to verify in a troubleshooting case. If the right volume exists but belongs to another SVM, or the protocol is not enabled on the expected SVM, the storage object alone will not make the service reachable.

NFS troubleshooting follows exports, identity, namespace, and network path

NFS access depends on the client reaching an NFS-capable data LIF, locating the intended namespace path, matching export policy, and presenting an identity that maps correctly to file permissions. A mount failure can therefore be a routing problem, a policy problem, or a path problem. A successful mount with “permission denied” points toward a different part of the chain.

Administrators should distinguish protocol availability from authorization. Testing basic IP reachability is useful, but it does not prove that the SVM allows the client to mount a path. Likewise, an export rule that matches the client does not prove that the client’s user identity has permission to the files.

A good NS0-165 troubleshooting habit is to state expected behavior at each step: resolve the correct address, reach the data LIF, match the export rule, traverse the namespace, and receive filesystem permissions appropriate to the mapped identity.

SMB adds domain identity, share permissions, and Windows-oriented behavior

SMB normally introduces directory-service identity and a share model familiar to Windows environments. The client must reach the SMB data LIF, authenticate to the service, access a valid share, and satisfy share and file permissions. Name resolution and time synchronization can also become important because domain authentication is sensitive to supporting infrastructure.

This layered permission model explains why “the share exists” is weak evidence. A user can authenticate but lack authorization to a folder, or the share can be configured correctly while the SVM cannot communicate with the directory service it relies on. Administrators should inspect the stage at which access fails instead of repeatedly changing permissions.

For exam preparation, focus on the relationship among the SMB server, SVM, LIF, share, identity source, and file permissions. The specific symptom usually indicates which relationship deserves attention first.

iSCSI carries block storage over IP but still needs storage and host identity to align

iSCSI uses IP networking to connect initiators on hosts to ONTAP targets. That makes familiar IP concepts relevant, but a successful TCP/IP path is only part of the solution. The host initiator must be recognized, the correct LUN must be mapped, and multipath configuration should provide resilient access where required.

A host that can ping a target interface but cannot see storage may have a discovery, initiator-group, LUN mapping, or host configuration problem rather than a network outage. Conversely, a perfectly mapped LUN will remain unreachable if the data path is routed or filtered incorrectly.

Because iSCSI shares Ethernet infrastructure with other traffic, design should also consider segmentation, redundancy, MTU consistency where applicable, and predictable pathing. The exam expectation is practical: know which layer is responsible for discovery, authorization, reachability, and host presentation.

Fibre Channel uses a fabric model, so zoning and multipath evidence matter

Fibre Channel SANs use a dedicated fabric rather than ordinary IP routing. The host HBA, fabric switches, target ports, zoning, ONTAP protocol configuration, initiator groups, and LUN mappings all participate in the path. A failure can occur at any one of those layers while the storage itself remains healthy.

Zoning controls which initiators and targets can communicate through the fabric. LUN mapping controls which initiators can access a particular block device. Those are separate controls. A correct zone does not grant LUN access, and a correct LUN map cannot repair a broken fabric path.

Multipath software on the host is also part of the operational picture. Redundant target paths are useful only when the host recognizes and uses them properly. Troubleshooting therefore includes fabric visibility, target availability, mapping, and host path state rather than just ONTAP commands.

Multipathing changes “reachable” into “resiliently reachable”

SAN designs normally expect more than one path between a host and storage. Redundant adapters, switches, target interfaces, and controller paths reduce the impact of a single component failure. But redundancy creates complexity: the host must identify multiple paths as access to the same LUN and choose or fail over among them correctly.

A degraded SAN can therefore remain online while quietly losing resilience. One path may have failed without users noticing. Operational monitoring should detect path loss before maintenance or a second fault turns it into an outage.

This is an important scenario distinction. “The application still works” does not prove the SAN is healthy. NS0-165 candidates should look for evidence of path redundancy, expected active/optimized states, and recovery after component failure rather than validating only basic I/O.

Protocol security is specific to the access model but follows common principles

NAS and SAN security differ in mechanics but share core principles: authenticate the correct identity, authorize only the required data, protect traffic where necessary, separate administrative access, and log enough evidence to investigate failures. SMB and NFS rely on file-oriented identity and permissions, while SAN adds initiator identity and fabric or network controls around LUN presentation.

Encryption can apply in transit and at rest, but it should be viewed as part of a complete trust model rather than a substitute for authorization. A perfectly encrypted connection can still expose the wrong data if access policy is overly broad.

When troubleshooting security, avoid weakening multiple controls at once. Change one layer, confirm the result, and preserve enough logging to explain why access succeeded or failed. That approach is safer and produces the evidence exam scenarios often imply.

Choose the troubleshooting sequence from the client’s access model

For NAS, start with name resolution and network reachability, then protocol service, namespace/share/export policy, identity, and file permission. For SAN, start with initiator-to-target path visibility, then protocol session or fabric state, initiator authorization, LUN mapping, multipath state, and host device discovery.

The sequences overlap at storage health, but they are not identical. That is the practical lesson behind the blueprint’s separate NAS and SAN objectives. Strong candidates do not treat a storage problem as “check everything.” They identify the access model, establish expected path behavior, and test each dependency in order until the evidence stops matching the design.

Study NAS and SAN together so the differences become memorable

Reviewing NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel side by side is more effective than four isolated protocol chapters. Ask the same questions for each: What does the client consume? Which SVM service is involved? Which network or fabric endpoint carries the traffic? How is the client identified? Where is authorization applied? What provides redundancy? Which evidence proves the service is healthy?

Those comparisons build the operational judgment NS0-165 is designed to validate. The goal is not to recite protocol ports or command syntax in isolation. It is to understand how ONTAP delivers file and block storage and how to diagnose the point where a client-to-data path breaks.

NAS and SAN are not simply two acronyms in the NS0-165 blueprint.
