AWS Certified Advanced Networking \u2013 Specialty ANS-C01 is still current, but AWS has announced that the exam retires on December 31, 2026. Candidates preparing for ANS-C01<\/a> therefore need two kinds of accuracy: current technical scope and current lifecycle status. The exam validates the ability to design, implement, manage, and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale.<\/p>\n

The official guide groups scored content into four domains: Network Design at 30%, Network Implementation at 26%, Network Management and Operation at 20%, and Network Security, Compliance, and Governance at 24%. Those weights show why the exam is not a collection of service definitions. It is an architecture-and-operations exam where routing, hybrid connectivity, DNS, automation, observability, security, and multi-account design interact.<\/p>\n

Network Design is the largest domain<\/h2>\n

Design questions start with requirements: connectivity model, throughput, latency, resilience, segmentation, account structure, application flow, and operational ownership. Candidates should be able to choose among VPC peering, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, VPN, Cloud WAN, and other patterns based on the architecture rather than on familiarity.<\/p>\n

ANS-C01 VPC routing<\/a> is central because many architecture choices eventually become route propagation, route-table, and reachability decisions. A service diagram can look correct while the design still fails because the participating routing domains do not exchange the intended prefixes.<\/p>\n

Hybrid connectivity requires routing and failure-domain thinking<\/h2>\n

Direct Connect and site-to-site VPN are not simply two ways to reach AWS. They have different performance, provisioning, redundancy, and failover characteristics. Production designs often combine private circuits and VPN so one mechanism provides primary connectivity while the other provides backup or encryption requirements.<\/p>\n

Understanding VPN fundamentals<\/a> helps with tunnel behavior, authentication, and routing, but ANS-C01 scenarios go further into AWS-specific hybrid topology. Candidates should be able to reason about virtual interfaces, gateways, Transit Gateway attachments, BGP sessions, route preference, redundant locations, and how on-premises devices react to path changes.<\/p>\n

Hybrid design should be evaluated during normal operation and during the loss of each important path. Candidates should ask which prefixes remain reachable, how BGP or static routing reacts, whether traffic becomes asymmetric, and whether the surviving path has enough capacity. Redundancy is only useful when the control plane and data plane converge to a usable state after failure.<\/p>\n

BGP knowledge is essential for Direct Connect and hybrid routing<\/h2>\n

BGP is not tested as abstract protocol trivia. The exam uses it to reason about route exchange, path preference, redundancy, and multi-site connectivity. The concepts in BGP path selection and policy<\/a> are valuable because a candidate should recognize what AS paths, communities, local preferences, and advertised prefixes mean for an AWS design.<\/p>\n

Troubleshooting BGP begins by separating session establishment from route selection. A session can be up while the wrong prefixes are advertised or preferred. Conversely, the correct route policy is irrelevant if the peering never establishes. Exam scenarios often become easier when you ask which layer is actually failing.<\/p>\n

Multi-account and multi-Region networking raises the design complexity<\/h2>\n

Large organizations need consistent connectivity across many VPCs, accounts, and Regions. Centralized Transit Gateway designs can reduce point-to-point sprawl, but route-table segmentation and ownership become critical. Resource sharing, inspection VPCs, shared services, and DNS need clear boundaries so centralization does not turn into one flat network.<\/p>\n

Candidates should also understand when connectivity should remain regional and when inter-Region communication is justified. Resilience, data transfer cost, application architecture, and regulatory boundaries can change the answer. The best design is not automatically the one with the maximum number of redundant links.<\/p>\n

Shared connectivity needs ownership boundaries. Central Transit Gateway or inspection services can simplify governance, but workload teams still need predictable route domains, DNS behavior, and change processes. A professional networking design should make it clear which team owns propagation, segmentation, and troubleshooting evidence so a multi-account outage does not become a debate over control boundaries.<\/p>\n

DNS is a hybrid architecture problem, not only a name-resolution service<\/h2>\n

Hybrid DNS can involve Route 53 private hosted zones, Resolver inbound and outbound endpoints, forwarding rules, on-premises DNS, split-horizon behavior, and multi-account sharing. DNS and network services<\/a> establish the resolution and forwarding mechanics; ANS-C01 requires candidates to place those mechanics inside AWS and hybrid topology.<\/p>\n

Troubleshooting should trace the query path. Which resolver receives the request? Which rule matches? Which zone is authoritative? Can the network reach the resolver endpoint? Is the zone associated with the right VPC? A DNS problem can be caused by routing or security even when the record itself is correct.<\/p>\n

Automation is part of implementation quality<\/h2>\n

At specialty scale, manual configuration becomes a reliability risk. The exam includes automation and configuration of network infrastructure, so candidates should understand how infrastructure as code, APIs, templates, and repeatable deployment patterns reduce drift. Automation should still include validation because a bad template can misconfigure hundreds of routes or security controls faster than a human operator.<\/p>\n

Strong automation includes idempotent changes, staged rollout, policy checks, and observability. Network changes are especially sensitive because a small routing mistake can isolate management paths or many workloads at once.<\/p>\n

Network Management and Operation is about evidence<\/h2>\n

Operating a large network requires flow logs, metrics, route visibility, packet evidence, alarms, and structured troubleshooting. The concepts in network observability<\/a> matter because no single telemetry source explains every failure. Flow logs can show allowed or rejected traffic while route tables explain path selection and application metrics reveal user impact.<\/p>\n

A good troubleshooting sequence defines source, destination, protocol, expected path, and observed failure. Then it checks DNS, routing, security controls, and service state in order. Random configuration changes are dangerous in complex networks because they can hide the original fault and introduce new ones.<\/p>\n

Troubleshooting evidence should be gathered from both ends of a hybrid path. Cloud route tables and flow logs may show one view while on-premises BGP state, firewall logs, and interface counters show another. Comparing those views helps identify whether the failure is route advertisement, route selection, security policy, transport, or application reachability.<\/p>\n

Security, compliance, and governance change routing decisions<\/h2>\n

Network security in AWS includes segmentation, security groups, network ACLs, centralized inspection, encryption, DDoS protection, logging, and policy governance. Candidates should understand which controls are stateful, which are stateless, where inspection occurs, and how traffic is routed through a security architecture without accidentally bypassing it.<\/p>\n

Governance also applies to who can create or change networks. In a multi-account environment, central networking teams may own Transit Gateway and shared services while application teams own VPC-level resources. The architecture should support that operating model rather than assuming one administrator controls everything.<\/p>\n

Network security controls should be placed with an understanding of route symmetry and failure behavior. Central inspection can satisfy governance requirements, but it can also create additional dependencies or asymmetric paths if route propagation is not coordinated. The best design makes the security path explicit during normal operation and during failover.<\/p>\n

Study the retirement date without treating the skills as obsolete<\/h2>\n

AWS says December 31, 2026 is the last day to take ANS-C01, and certifications earned before retirement remain active for the normal validity period. That makes schedule planning important for candidates testing late in 2026. It does not make the technical skills obsolete: BGP, hybrid connectivity, DNS, segmentation, observability, and resilient cloud networking remain valuable after the credential stops accepting new exams.<\/p>\n

The AWS certification portfolio<\/a> connects advanced networking to broader architecture and operations skills, but current ANS-C01 first-party objectives remain the authority for this retiring exam. Older study material can still teach networking concepts, yet it should not override the current in-scope and out-of-scope service lists.<\/p>\n

Rehearse architecture scenarios across all four domains<\/h2>\n

Create a reference design with two on-premises sites, two AWS Regions, multiple accounts, centralized inspection, hybrid DNS, Direct Connect, and VPN backup. Then change one requirement at a time: lower latency, stronger isolation, a failed circuit, overlapping CIDR ranges, or a new compliance boundary. Explain how the design and routes change.<\/p>\n

That kind of exercise integrates design, implementation, operations, and security\u2014the same four dimensions used by the official exam domains. If you can explain the packet path, the control points, the failover behavior, and the evidence you would inspect during an incident, you are practicing the specialist-level reasoning ANS-C01 is meant to validate.<\/p>\n

Overlapping IP address space is a recurring enterprise networking constraint. Mergers, partners, and legacy environments can create CIDR collisions that complicate routing. Candidates should be able to recognize when translation, segmentation, proxies, or architecture changes are needed rather than assuming every network can be joined directly.<\/p>\n

Network cost should also influence design. Cross-AZ, cross-Region, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, NAT, and data-transfer choices can change operating cost materially. A resilient design is not complete until the team understands both the failure behavior and the traffic economics of the chosen path.<\/p>\n

PrivateLink and service endpoints introduce another layer of design reasoning. They can keep service access off the public internet and simplify consumer-provider connectivity, but they do not replace all VPC-to-VPC networking. Candidates should recognize when the requirement is access to a specific service versus broad network reachability. The narrower service pattern can reduce transitive routing complexity and limit exposure when it fits the application.<\/p>\n

Transit Gateway route tables can implement segmentation, but they must be designed intentionally. A shared transit layer with one universal route table can accidentally flatten environments that were meant to remain isolated. Separate route domains, controlled propagation, and inspection paths allow centralized connectivity without granting every VPC reachability to every other VPC. Troubleshooting should verify both attachment association and route propagation.<\/p>\n

IPv6 can appear in modern AWS designs alongside IPv4, and dual-stack architecture changes addressing, routing, and security assumptions. Engineers should know that IPv6 does not use NAT in the same way as common IPv4 patterns and that egress-only internet gateways, security rules, DNS records, and on-premises support can influence the design. Migration strategy matters when existing systems are not IPv6-ready.<\/p>\n

Specialty-level troubleshooting also means knowing when the application problem is not networking. If routes, DNS, security controls, and transport connectivity are correct, the remaining failure may be at the application or TLS layer. Efficient engineers stop changing the network when evidence points elsewhere. This discipline prevents complex AWS environments from accumulating unnecessary routing and firewall changes during incidents.<\/p>\n

A final review should include route-scale and quota awareness. Transit architectures, prefix advertisements, security groups, and resolver rules all have practical limits. Even when the exam does not ask for a specific quota value, candidates should recognize when a design that works for ten VPCs may need aggregation, hierarchy, or a different control model at enterprise scale.<\/p>\n

A useful scenario drill combines at least two domains. For example, a Direct Connect design may also include DNS forwarding, centralized inspection, and a compliance rule that changes where traffic may flow.
