A design can have enough raw CPU or storage and still be wrong if failure tolerance, vSAN behavior, host networking, external dependencies, or maintenance requirements are ignored.

Dell D-VXR-DS-00 is the legacy VxRail Design exam generation. Dell retired D-VXR-DS-00 on July 9, 2026 and introduced D-VXR-DS-01 as its successor on July 10. The older blueprint remains useful for durable VxRail architecture, deployment planning, resource sizing, and validation concepts, but current candidates should use the D-VXR-DS-01 objectives for present-day certification planning.

VxRail design begins with workload and failure requirements

Start with workloads rather than the appliance catalog. CPU demand, memory working set, usable storage, IOPS, throughput, latency, growth, availability, maintenance windows, and recovery expectations all influence the cluster. Virtual-machine count alone is weak evidence because one database VM can consume more resources than dozens of lightly used infrastructure VMs.

Peak behavior matters. Month-end processing, backup windows, analytics jobs, vMotion activity, or seasonal traffic can push the environment far above ordinary averages. Use measured evidence where possible and distinguish normal utilization from the periods that actually determine service quality.

Design for degraded states as well as normal operation. If the business expects workloads to continue during a node failure or planned maintenance, enough compute, memory, network, and storage capacity must remain after that resource is removed. Failure-tolerance assumptions affect usable storage and the minimum practical node count.

Application constraints also belong in the requirements. Licensing by socket or core, hardware affinity, GPU needs, latency-sensitive workloads, backup windows, or special network dependencies can change which node mix is economical even when several configurations are technically supported.

The Dell D-PE-FN-01 article provides useful hardware context because VxRail nodes still depend on server processors, memory channels, drives, PCIe resources, networking, power, cooling, firmware, and serviceability.

Deployment planning connects vCenter, networking, and vSAN

A VxRail cluster depends on a working virtualization and network design. Planning should identify vCenter placement, management addresses, DNS, time synchronization, VLANs, uplinks, switch ports, vSphere Distributed Switch requirements, vMotion, vSAN traffic, backup connectivity, and any witness or external services required by the chosen topology.

Traffic classes should be understood separately. Management, vMotion, vSAN, guest workloads, backup, replication, and lifecycle operations can have different bandwidth, latency, and security requirements. A single under-sized or poorly segmented uplink design can make an otherwise well-sized cluster perform badly.

External vCenter placement changes dependency and recovery assumptions. If vCenter runs outside the VxRail cluster, document the path and ownership; if management services depend on the cluster itself, identify how administrators recover or manage the environment when that cluster is impaired.

Name resolution and time are operational dependencies. Certificate validation, authentication, cluster discovery, logs, and management workflows can all fail in confusing ways when DNS or NTP is inconsistent.

A good design package gives the deployment team enough detail that they are not inventing production VLANs, switch behavior, naming, or management ownership while the hardware is already in the rack.

Node and resource sizing should use measured evidence

Dell’s D-VXR-DS-00 blueprint emphasized determining nodes and resources and referenced tools such as Live Optics and the VxRail Sizing Tool. Those tools are useful when their inputs are trustworthy. They do not remove the need to understand where the workload data came from, which peaks were captured, and what assumptions were used for growth and protection.

Validate CPU, memory, storage growth, read/write mix, latency, working-set behavior, and burst demand. Average values can hide short periods of saturation that users experience as application delay.

Effective capacity assumptions also need caution. Deduplication or compression can improve usable economics, but data type and workload behavior determine the actual result. Already compressed, encrypted, or highly unique datasets may reduce less than expected.

Reserve capacity for operations. Rebuilds, node maintenance, upgrades, temporary workload movement, snapshots, and expansion can consume resources that normal workload sizing does not show.

Define the expansion trigger during design. Operations should know which utilization, growth rate, or performance condition means the next node or capacity action needs to begin before the cluster becomes constrained.

vSAN policy changes usable capacity and resilience

VxRail uses vSAN for distributed storage, so storage policy is part of workload design. Failure tolerance, object placement, capacity consumption, and rebuild requirements are connected. A stronger resilience target generally consumes more resources than a lower one.

Different workloads can justify different policies. A critical production database, ordinary application VM, temporary test environment, and disposable cache do not necessarily need identical protection.

Rebuild and resynchronization behavior matter. Enough healthy nodes and free capacity need to remain after a failure so vSAN can restore compliance. Storage-network capacity also matters because resynchronization traffic can compete with application I/O during a degraded state.

Newer vSAN architecture options can change design assumptions, which is another reason legacy D-VXR-DS-00 material should be used for durable architecture principles while current configuration details come from the successor exam.

Storage fundamentals are useful background for distinguishing logical capacity, physical capacity, redundancy, performance, and failure domains.

Special topologies need their own design assumptions

The legacy blueprint included two-node deployments, stretched clusters, Dynamic Nodes, cluster expansion, and newer vSAN architecture considerations. These are not small variants of one standard cluster. Each changes dependency, network, storage, and recovery behavior.

A two-node design has less spare capacity and depends heavily on witness communication. Maintenance planning needs to consider what remains available while one node is serviced and whether the witness path is still reliable.

A stretched cluster adds site-level failure domains. Latency, bandwidth, witness placement, preferred-site behavior, external service availability, and application recovery expectations should be documented.

Dynamic Nodes and external-storage models separate compute from the ordinary VxRail vSAN architecture. The design should make clear which platform owns data availability and how lifecycle or troubleshooting responsibilities are split.

Expansion also deserves its own plan. Node compatibility, software level, rack capacity, switch ports, optics, power, cooling, licensing, rebalance behavior, and workload placement can all affect how safely the cluster grows.

Physical design and site readiness still matter

Hyperconverged does not eliminate data-center constraints. Rack units, PDU capacity, redundant power feeds, cooling, airflow, cable lengths, switch interfaces, optics, management networks, floor or rack loading, and service access should be checked before hardware delivery.

Redundancy should avoid shared failure domains. Two uplinks into one switch or two power supplies connected to the same feed may look redundant while failing together.

Aggregate network demand should include maintenance and failure scenarios. vMotion, vSAN resynchronization, backup traffic, and application workloads can overlap, making a network that is comfortable during steady-state operation congested exactly when the cluster is trying to recover.

Site readiness also protects the schedule. Missing optics, incorrect switch speeds, inadequate power, or unresolved management addressing can delay deployment even when the hardware selection is correct.

The Dell certifications page provides vendor context for current VxRail, PowerEdge, storage, and data-center infrastructure tracks.

Validation should trace requirements into the as-built cluster

Acceptance should verify node resources, vCenter integration, host networking, vSAN health, storage-policy compliance, redundancy, workload placement, monitoring, backup connectivity, and the assumptions that justified the design.

Test at least one meaningful degraded-state or maintenance scenario where practical. Confirm the cluster identifies the failure correctly and that remaining resources can support the workloads the business expects to remain online.

Validate operational tasks too. The customer should know how to check cluster health, apply supported lifecycle updates, expand the environment, collect support evidence, identify capacity pressure, and restore a protected workload.

Acceptance criteria should be written before deployment. Capacity, performance, resilience, network reachability, monitoring, security, and recovery become objective checks.

Update documentation when installation forces a change. Operations need the as-built rack, network, management, storage, and dependency design.

Use D-VXR-DS-00 as legacy architecture context

D-VXR-DS-00 is no longer current after July 9, 2026. Its value is conceptual continuity: VxRail architecture, deployment planning, workload characterization, sizing, failure tolerance, networking, special configurations, expansion, and validation.

For current certification work, switch to D-VXR-DS-01 and compare the live blueprint with the older domains before reusing study notes.

Build practice designs for a general virtualization cluster, a stretched cluster, and a resource-constrained edge deployment. Document workload evidence, node sizing, storage policy, network design, dependencies, rack requirements, growth, and acceptance criteria.

Then change one assumption—growth, data reduction, recovery target, site count, or switch availability—and explain which part of the design changes. That requirement-to-design-to-validation chain is the durable skill behind the legacy exam and its successor.

One final design habit is to document assumptions that were not fully measured. If utilization history, data-reduction behavior, growth, or intersite latency is estimated, label it explicitly and define how the team will validate it after deployment. That turns uncertainty into a managed design risk rather than allowing a guess to become an invisible production dependency.

One final design habit is to document assumptions that were not fully measured.
