Experienced security professionals often ask whether they should earn CISSP or CCSP first. That is a better question than asking which certification is \u201cbetter,\u201d because the two credentials are designed for different scopes and the order can change the amount of duplicated effort, the experience requirements that apply, and the way each credential supports the next role.<\/p>\n
CISSP<\/a> is the broader security credential. It spans governance and risk, assets, architecture, networks, identity, assessment, operations, and software security. CCSP<\/a> concentrates on cloud security: cloud concepts and architecture, data security, platform and infrastructure security, application security, cloud operations, and legal\/risk\/compliance issues.<\/p>\n For many professionals, the best sequence follows the scope of their current work. There is also an important experience-rule advantage: an active CISSP credential can substitute for the entire CCSP experience requirement. That can make CISSP-first an efficient route for experienced generalists who know they eventually want both.<\/p>\n If your current responsibilities span several parts of the security program, CISSP is usually the more natural first credential. Security architects, managers, senior engineers, consultants, and risk leaders often need to understand how identity, networking, software, operations, governance, and business requirements interact. The eight-domain CISSP structure reflects that cross-functional work.<\/p>\n If your day-to-day responsibility is specifically cloud security, CCSP may produce more immediate value. Cloud security engineers, cloud architects, platform-security specialists, cloud consultants, and professionals responsible for cloud governance may use CCSP concepts directly in the work they perform every week.<\/p>\n This does not mean a cloud professional should avoid CISSP or a generalist should avoid CCSP. It means the first credential should usually validate the problems you are already solving, because that is where study becomes easiest to connect with experience and where the credential is most credible to an employer.<\/p>\n The CISSP experience requirement<\/a> is normally five years of cumulative professional experience in at least two CISSP domains. One year can be waived through a qualifying degree or approved credential.<\/p>\n CCSP also normally requires five years of cumulative IT experience, including three years in cybersecurity and one year in at least one of the six CCSP domains. In that case, waiting to complete CISSP first can delay the more relevant signal.<\/p>\n The current CCSP eligibility rules<\/a> allow a qualifying degree or CSA CCSK to substitute for one year of experience, while candidates without the required experience can pass the exam and become an Associate of ISC2. If the candidate already satisfies the CCSP experience standard, there is no need to earn CISSP merely as an administrative shortcut.<\/p>\n CCSP-first is especially reasonable when the target roles explicitly ask for cloud security architecture, cloud data protection, platform security, workload security, cloud application security, or cloud compliance. Its challenge comes from moving between governance, assets, architecture, communications and networking, identity, assessment, operations, and software security while applying risk-based judgment.<\/p>\n CCSP’s six domains stay inside the cloud-security problem space: Cloud Concepts, Architecture and Design; Cloud Data Security; Cloud Platform and Infrastructure Security; Cloud Application Security; Cloud Security Operations; and Legal, Risk and Compliance.<\/p>\n A CISSP-first candidate enters CCSP with broad security models already established. The cloud study can then focus on how those principles change under shared responsibility, multi-tenancy, cloud service models, distributed identity, virtualized infrastructure, API-driven operations, data residency, and cloud-specific legal or contractual concerns.<\/p>\n A CCSP-first candidate may develop strong cloud depth before building the wider organizational view CISSP expects. Moving from CCSP to CISSP then requires expansion into areas that cloud work may not cover deeply, such as broader personnel security, physical security, enterprise risk, general software-development security, investigations, and non-cloud network architecture.<\/p>\n Both credentials cover risk, architecture, data protection, identity, operations, application security, and compliance. The difference is context and breadth. CISSP asks how those ideas work across the enterprise security program. CCSP asks how they work specifically in cloud environments.<\/p>\n That overlap can reduce study effort for the second exam if the first credential is still fresh. More importantly, it can improve professional reasoning. A CISSP who studies CCSP learns to apply broad security principles to cloud-native constraints. A CCSP who studies CISSP learns to place cloud controls inside the larger governance, asset, network, software, and business-continuity picture.<\/p>\n CCSP and CISSP<\/a> illustrate the general breadth-versus-depth distinction, but sequencing adds another question: which body of knowledge creates the strongest foundation for the work you want to do next?<\/p>\n A security engineer who expects to move into enterprise architecture may choose CISSP first even if much of the current environment is cloud-based. The next role will require broader conversations about risk, identity, applications, networks, governance, and business priorities.<\/p>\n A network or systems engineer moving directly into cloud-security engineering may choose CCSP first because the immediate hiring problem is proving cloud-security depth. CISSP can follow later as responsibility expands beyond cloud implementation.<\/p>\n A security manager responsible for both traditional and cloud environments will often get more leverage from CISSP first. A cloud consultant whose clients expect deep guidance on cloud architecture and governance may reasonably reverse the order.<\/p>\n Sequence is therefore a career-architecture decision. If both credentials appear in a long-term plan, decide which one best matches the responsibility you need to earn first.<\/p>\n ISC2 currently lists the CISSP exam at US$749 in its U.S.-dollar regions and CCSP at US$599. Both exams are now delivered in Computerized Adaptive Testing formats, although their blueprints and durations differ.<\/p>\n Certified ISC2 members pay a single US$135 Annual Maintenance Fee even when they hold multiple covered credentials. Holding both CISSP and CCSP therefore does not double the annual maintenance fee. Each certification has continuing professional education requirements, and relevant professional-development activity can often support multiple learning objectives.<\/p>\n The larger sequencing cost is time. Taking the exams close enough together to benefit from overlapping concepts can be efficient, but stacking two major certification projects while managing a demanding job can produce shallow learning. It is often better to let the first credential influence real work before starting the second.<\/p>\n CISSP-first is the stronger default when you already qualify for CISSP, your work spans multiple security domains, you are moving toward architecture or management, or you want the experience-substitution benefit before CCSP. It creates a broad framework first and then adds cloud depth.<\/p>\n After CISSP, a professional can also decide whether CCSP is still the best specialization. Post-CISSP career options<\/a> include cloud security, architecture, governance, management, and other directions, so CCSP should be chosen because cloud responsibility is the actual next step.<\/p>\n CCSP-first is stronger when your current work is already cloud-centered, the next role explicitly values cloud-security depth, and you meet or are close to the CCSP experience requirement.
