An identity dashboard says the service account signed in successfully. A proxy log shows traffic to an unfamiliar domain. An endpoint alert says a script executed just before the export. It is tempting to arrange those events into a simple story: the service account was compromised, stole the records and uploaded them outside the company.

That story might eventually be supported. At the moment, it is still a hypothesis. Clocks can differ, multiple workloads can share an identity, network events can reflect a legitimate backup, and some telemetry can record an attempt rather than a completed action. CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 objective 4.9 asks candidates to understand investigation data sources. The useful skill is knowing what each source can prove, where it can mislead and how to preserve a defensible event timeline.

Choose sources that answer the question, not just the alert

The first investigation question should be specific. Did someone authenticate as the service identity? Which system executed the export? Did protected records actually leave? Was the destination authorized? These are related but distinct claims, often requiring different evidence. A single SIEM correlation rule may surface the incident, yet the investigation cannot stop at the alert description.

Security log sources frequently describe only part of an action. An authentication log can show accepted credentials but not every file the session read. A firewall flow can show communication between addresses but may not reveal application content. A process event can record execution but not always the arguments, resulting data or business authorization. Investigators should join those observations carefully rather than treating any one record as a complete narrative.

Source

Useful question

Important limitation

Identity and authentication logs

Which principal signed in, with what method and from which reported client?

Shared or compromised credentials do not reliably identify the human behind the session.

Endpoint process and security events

Which program or script executed, under which user and parent process?

Coverage may be missing, tampered with, or too limited to show output data.

Network flows, firewall and DNS records

Which hosts communicated, to what endpoint and around which time?

Encrypted content and NAT may obscure the ultimate user or bytes’ meaning.

Proxy and web gateway events

Which approved or suspicious internet destination did a client request?

URL visibility varies with protocol and deployment, and a request may not equal success.

Application/database audit records

Which account queried, modified or exported a particular data collection?

Application actions may use a shared service identity or produce incomplete event detail.

Cloud control-plane and object access audit

Who changed permissions or requested objects in a storage service?

Not all data-plane operations may be logged by default; retention and scopes vary.

Email and collaboration records

Was a file attached, shared, forwarded or exposed through an external invitation?

A sent invitation does not prove the recipient opened or copied the content.

Physical access and asset records

Was a person or removable device present during an event?

Badges can be shared and access timestamps rarely prove digital intent alone.

Asking what a record cannot prove is not indecision. It is what keeps an investigation from confusing correlation with identity, and attempted behavior with completed exfiltration.

Worked case: build a timeline of the payroll export

The payroll database logs a read operation by a service account at 02:17 UTC. The identity provider recorded a token request at 02:15:41. An endpoint sensor on a scheduled reporting server logged a shell script launching at 02:16:08. A proxy recorded an outbound HTTPS connection to an unfamiliar host at 02:17:24. The network gateway reports a substantial byte count, while a legitimate overnight report job was also scheduled for roughly this time.

Start with the effective identity, not the username alone. Determine whether the service account was used through an approved workload identity, a reusable secret or an unexpected login path. Check device identifiers, token audience, sign-in location, approved schedule and recent changes to the service account. A successful sign-in indicates accepted authentication, not that the person or process was authorized to export payroll data.

Connect execution to the database activity. Inspect the endpoint event for script identity, parent process, deployment package and available command metadata. Compare with the approved scheduled job and change records. If the script normally runs from this server, determine whether its parameters or destination changed. A familiar process name can run modified code; conversely, an unfamiliar parent might indicate intrusion or simply an updated automation platform.

Identify the destination and transfer result. Look for the resolved domain, connection metadata, applicable proxy logs, cloud storage API calls and any approved data-transfer records. A large network flow alone does not establish the exact records sent. Application audit and destination-side evidence may be needed to conclude that payroll data left the organization. If content inspection is unavailable, state that limitation honestly rather than treating byte count as definitive proof.

Normalize the clock and explain uncertainty. Compare all timestamps with a common reference, account for known time zones, clock drift, batching, ingestion delay and log precision. A SIEM’s event arrival time may be later than the underlying action. The timeline should distinguish occurrence time from collection or ingestion time and should preserve the raw timestamps used for conversion.

Test an innocent alternative. The legitimate scheduled report may explain the database read but not the new external destination. Compare expected volume, approved target, prior runs and the current job’s configuration. When the evidence rules out a normal explanation, escalate using the organization’s incident response authority and preserve the relevant data before it expires.

The final finding might be confirmed unauthorized exfiltration, a reporting job misconfiguration, or an unresolved suspicious transfer. Those conclusions require different remediations and notifications. The investigator should not choose the most dramatic story simply because it sounds coherent.

Collect volatile evidence with a deliberate order

Evidence can disappear while analysts deliberate. Running processes, active connections and memory state may change or vanish during a restart. Network logs may rotate; cloud events may expire; temporary credentials may be revoked before their associated session is understood. A collection plan should weigh the value and volatility of each source against safety, operational impact and the team’s authority and skill.

For a compromised endpoint, an approved forensic acquisition may preserve memory or other volatile state before powering it off. For a cloud application, timely export of relevant identity, object-access and change logs may matter more. There is no universal rule that an untrained responder must always perform a live memory dump: incorrect collection can alter data, disrupt a critical service or violate privacy. Procedures should define when specialists are required and which sources deserve priority.

NIST SP 800-86 describes integrating forensic techniques into incident response, including identifying, acquiring, protecting, processing and analyzing data from operating systems, networks, files and applications. Although the publication is older, its distinction between source collection, integrity and interpretation remains useful. Legal evidentiary requirements depend on the jurisdiction and the investigation’s purpose; security exam preparation is not legal advice.

Integrity hashes and chain of custody solve different problems

When evidence is copied, an appropriate cryptographic hash can help show that the saved copy has not changed since the recorded acquisition. This assumes trustworthy acquisition, documented tools and a known baseline hash. Matching digests do not, by themselves, prove that the original log was truthful or that the account shown in the record belonged to the suspected employee.

Chain of custody records who collected, held, transferred, accessed and stored the evidence, with times, identifiers, reasons and protection measures as required by the organization’s procedure. It helps demonstrate continuity and accountable handling. It is not a substitute for verifying the evidence’s meaning or assessing whether logs were created by a compromised system.

For sensitive investigations, work from authorized copies where feasible and protect the original. Restrict evidence access, document analysis steps and retain tool and configuration details needed for a reviewer to reproduce significant conclusions. For cloud logs, record the export query, selected time range, tenant or resource scope and the source’s event retention conditions. Otherwise an apparently complete evidence archive may be impossible to reconcile against the original service.

Correlation is not attribution

Suppose a badge reader shows an employee entering the office just before a database export. That observation may matter, but it does not prove the employee initiated the query. An unattended workload could have executed it, a colleague might be using a shared workstation or a remote actor might have stolen an access token. Similarly, an IP address may belong to a NAT gateway serving many users.

Attribution becomes stronger when independent evidence agrees on the relevant identity, resource and action. Correlate authenticated session identifiers, workload IDs, process lineage, target object records and network context; document contradictions. When the evidence supports only an account-level action, report that rather than claiming to know which human was responsible.

Investigators should also consider missing evidence. If object-level logs were disabled, the team may know a storage account was accessed but not which files were read. The correct next action may be to improve collection for future incidents, preserve related evidence and avoid an unsupported conclusion about the current event.

Turn investigative findings into operational learning

Investigation is connected to containment and recovery but should not be confused with either. A security team might revoke a suspected token quickly to prevent further access while preserving proof that it existed and reviewing associated sessions. A restored service does not prove whether sensitive records were disclosed before containment.

The current NIST SP 800-61 Revision 3, finalized April 2025, frames incident response across cybersecurity risk management, emphasizing preparation, detection, response and recovery in an organizational context. For the Security+ evidence objective, the practical lesson is that better incident outcomes begin with well-chosen telemetry, competent collection responsibilities and records retained long enough to answer important questions.

After an investigation, consider whether critical logs were missing, time synchronization was inconsistent, access privileges were too broad, or the detection rule lacked an authoritative source. Assign improvement owners and verify the change. Otherwise a future analyst may face the same misleading alert with less evidence to resolve it.

Practice an evidence-led decision

Build a fictitious timeline with an identity event, a workstation process, a database export, a DNS query and an outbound proxy connection. Give one record a five-minute clock error and omit object-level storage logs. Then write three statements: what is proven, what is reasonably suspected, and what cannot yet be determined. State which source you would acquire next and why its data may be volatile.

Next, add a second legitimate scheduled job and ask whether the conclusion still holds. The exercise tests evidence correlation rather than SIEM menu navigation. For more practice, use the existing CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 investigation-data-sources practice test. Once you can defend how the evidence supports a conclusion, the CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 exam-preparation resources connect that skill with monitoring, response and governance across the certification.

A credible investigation does not merely join timestamps into a convincing narrative. It identifies the limits of each observation and preserves enough evidence for another reviewer to understand why the final decision was reached.

At 02:17 a monitoring system reports a large export from a payroll database.
