The current Cisco CCNA 200-301 v1.1 exam remains available through February 2, 2027. Cisco has already published the next major blueprint, CCNA v2.0, which begins testing on February 3, 2027. That means candidates studying now should build a plan around an actual test date rather than a generic “CCNA study guide.”

The current CCNA certification still validates the same broad foundation that has made it useful across networking, infrastructure, cloud, and security roles: network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability. The exam is 120 minutes and has no formal prerequisite. Cisco also emphasizes hands-on configuration and verification in its official training, which is a useful reminder that memorizing terminology is not enough.

If your exam is scheduled before the v2.0 transition, the right strategy is not to abandon v1.1. Cisco has explicitly told candidates who are already preparing to continue. The durable networking skills carry forward, and a disciplined v1.1 plan can still produce a strong foundation for later professional-level study.

Start with the current 200-301 blueprint, not an old CCNA checklist

The safest preparation map is the active 200-301 CCNA exam scope. Older books and courses can still explain Ethernet, IPv4, routing, VLANs, and ACLs perfectly well, but the exam has moved beyond the older idea of CCNA as almost entirely routing and switching.

Network fundamentals should leave you comfortable with device roles, TCP and UDP, cabling, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, wireless principles, virtualization, and the behavior of common traffic flows. Network access adds switching, VLANs, trunks, EtherChannel, Rapid PVST+, access points, wireless LAN controllers, and management access. IP connectivity asks you to reason from routing tables and understand how routers actually select paths. IP services covers supporting services such as NAT, DHCP, DNS, NTP, QoS concepts, SNMP, syslog, and secure device access. Security fundamentals and automation then extend the same network into the operating model expected from a modern engineer.

Do not study these domains as six unrelated chapters. A VLAN problem can become a routing problem; a routing problem can look like an ACL problem; a DNS symptom can actually be reachability; a failed API workflow can still trace back to addressing, authentication, or network policy. The strongest CCNA candidates learn to connect layers instead of memorizing isolated commands.

Make subnetting and address reasoning automatic

IPv4 subnetting still deserves deliberate practice because it influences routing, VLAN design, ACL matching, DHCP scopes, NAT, and network troubleshooting. You should be able to take an address and prefix, identify the network, usable host range, and broadcast address, and then reason about whether two endpoints belong to the same subnet without turning every problem into a long calculation.

The goal is not speed for its own sake. It is to remove arithmetic friction so you can focus on the networking decision. A route such as 10.20.16.0/20 should immediately tell you something different from 10.20.16.0/24. If a host has the wrong mask, you should be able to predict which destinations it will incorrectly treat as local.

Use practical IPv4 subnetting exercises alongside labs. Build networks, assign addresses, deliberately make one mask wrong, and observe the result. That creates a stronger memory than completing dozens of decontextualized binary-conversion questions.

IPv6 also needs real attention. Know the major address types, prefix behavior, link-local addressing, and basic configuration and verification. You do not need to treat IPv6 as an appendix to IPv4; the exam expects both to be part of normal network operation.

Build Layer 2 knowledge around traffic behavior

Switching becomes easier when you ask what a frame will do rather than memorizing command syntax. Understand how a switch learns MAC addresses, what happens with unknown unicast traffic, why broadcast domains matter, and how VLANs change forwarding boundaries.

Then add trunks, inter-switch connectivity, EtherChannel, and Spanning Tree. The current v1.1 scope specifically expects awareness of protections such as root guard, loop guard, BPDU filter, and BPDU guard. These were added during the v1.1 refresh because basic Layer 2 operation is not enough; entry-level network engineers also need to recognize common ways a switched topology can be protected from accidental or malicious disruption.

A strong review of VLANs, trunks, Spanning Tree, and Layer 2 design should end with you being able to explain the forwarding path. If a host in VLAN 20 reaches a server in VLAN 40, which device performs Layer 3 forwarding? Which trunk carries the frames? What happens if the VLAN is missing from one side of the trunk? These questions connect configuration to behavior.

Learn routing by reading the table before touching commands

Routing questions become much less intimidating when you first identify the decision the router has to make. Given several candidate routes, the router chooses the most specific matching prefix. Administrative distance and protocol metrics matter when multiple sources describe routes to the same destination, but longest-prefix matching comes first.

Practice connected routes, local routes, static routes, default routes, and single-area OSPF. For OSPF, focus on neighbor formation, router IDs, network participation, interface state, and what should appear in the routing table. The point is not to memorize every OSPF detail from professional-level exams; it is to understand enough to configure and verify the protocol at CCNA depth.

OSPF fundamentals become much more useful when paired with a broken topology. Remove a network statement, introduce an addressing mismatch, or shut an interface and then diagnose the missing route from evidence rather than guessing.

Treat IP services and security as part of the network, not separate subjects

Many real network failures occur outside basic switching and routing. DNS may fail while IP reachability works. DHCP may allocate the wrong gateway. NAT may translate one path but not another. NTP drift may make logs misleading. An ACL may block exactly the traffic you are trying to test. CCNA preparation should therefore include the services that make an IP network operational, not merely reachable.

Security should be studied the same way. Device hardening, secure management, password and authentication concepts, Layer 2 security, ACLs, VPN concepts, and wireless security all protect the same infrastructure you are learning to build. A candidate who can configure an ACL but cannot explain why it belongs at a particular point in the traffic path has learned syntax without learning control.

This is also where troubleshooting habits matter. Start with the symptom, define the expected path, gather evidence, and change one thing at a time. CCNA is broad enough that random configuration changes quickly become counterproductive.

Give automation and AI the right depth for v1.1

CCNA v1.1 added or refined several topics that older materials may not cover correctly. Cisco replaced the older campus-management comparison with a high-level requirement to explain generative AI, predictive AI, and machine learning in network operations. It added cloud-managed device access, expanded API awareness to include authentication types, and shifted the configuration-management examples toward Ansible and Terraform.

That does not turn CCNA into a software-development exam. The blueprint verbs matter. You should understand what APIs do, why structured data such as JSON matters, how controller-based networking differs from box-by-box configuration, and what tools such as Ansible and Terraform contribute to repeatable change. Network automation fundamentals are easier to retain when you connect them to a familiar networking task such as creating VLANs consistently across several devices.

For AI, focus on operational use rather than model engineering. Know the difference between predictive and generative behavior and understand how AI can support analysis, anomaly detection, troubleshooting, and network operations. Cisco’s own v1.1 guidance describes these as explanation-level skills, not deep implementation requirements.

Use labs to turn the blueprint into usable skill

Hands-on work should mirror the verbs in the blueprint. If the objective says “configure and verify,” do both. If it says “interpret,” inspect outputs and explain what they mean. If it says “describe” or “explain,” make sure you can articulate the concept without hiding behind a memorized command.

Build a small lab that you keep extending. Start with two switches and a router. Add VLANs and trunks. Add inter-VLAN routing. Add OSPF. Add DHCP and NAT. Add an ACL. Add a wireless segment if your tools allow it. Then break the topology deliberately. A single evolving lab teaches dependencies better than a folder of disconnected exercises.

Cisco Modeling Labs, packet simulators, virtual appliances, and physical equipment can all help. The platform matters less than the habit of predicting what should happen before you run a command. Verification should be part of every lab, not an afterthought after configuration.

Use readiness evidence instead of a calendar-only study plan

A study calendar is useful, but readiness should be measured by performance. Near the end of preparation, test yourself by domain and by task type. Can you calculate and design subnets without prompts? Can you read a routing table and predict the next hop? Can you configure a VLAN/trunk path and explain the expected Spanning Tree behavior? Can you diagnose an ACL or NAT problem from show output?

Track weak areas by evidence rather than intuition. If routing questions feel difficult, separate whether the weakness is subnetting, route selection, OSPF, or interpretation of command output. If automation feels weak, determine whether the gap is API vocabulary, JSON structure, controller concepts, or configuration-management tools. A readiness matrix should produce a concrete backlog, not a vague feeling that you need “more practice.”

Also rehearse switching between domains. Real exam questions do not arrive in the order you studied them. Alternating a subnetting problem, a wireless scenario, a routing-table question, and an API concept builds the mental flexibility needed for a broad exam.

Plan the exam around the February 2027 transition

As of October 2026, Cisco says CCNA v1.1 remains available through February 2, 2027, with v2.0 beginning February 3. If you are already close to ready, there is no strong reason to delay merely to take the newer version. The current exam still validates a broad and useful networking foundation.

If your realistic test date is after the transition, study the new blueprint deliberately rather than letting the change catch you by surprise. Cisco describes v2.0 as the first major CCNA blueprint change since 2019 and says it will place more emphasis on practical skills, troubleshooting, a security-first mindset, and AI in network management and operations. The important point is not to mix two blueprints accidentally.

Whichever version you choose, the durable preparation strategy is the same: use the official scope as the map, master addressing and packet flow, build switching and routing fluency, understand the services and controls around the network, and practice enough automation to recognize how modern operations are changing. That approach prepares you for the exam while also building the foundation expected before moving into CCNP Enterprise or another Cisco specialization.

CCNA remains Cisco’s broad associate-level networking certification, but preparing for it in late 2026 requires one important decision before anything else: which version of the exam are you targeting?
