It has different storage models for different access patterns, performance needs, operating systems, sharing requirements, retention policies, and migration constraints. Choosing correctly starts with the workload rather than the product name.

For most architecture decisions, the first distinction is object, block, or file storage. Amazon S3 is object storage. Amazon EBS provides block volumes for EC2 workloads. Amazon EFS provides managed shared file storage for Linux-oriented workloads. Amazon FSx provides managed file systems based on technologies such as Windows File Server, Lustre, NetApp ONTAP, and OpenZFS. AWS then adds services such as DataSync, Storage Gateway, and AWS Backup to move, bridge, and protect data.

That makes a workload-based approach more useful than a list of “emerging” services. Professionals working through AWS certifications should be able to explain why a storage service fits the application, not merely recognize the service description.

Start with the access pattern: object, block, or file

Storage selection becomes much easier when you identify how the application expects to interact with data. An application that writes objects through an API has different needs from a database expecting a block device or a fleet of Linux servers mounting the same file system.

Object storage is ideal when data can be addressed as discrete objects rather than modified through a mounted block device. Block storage behaves more like a disk attached to a server and is useful for operating systems, databases, and applications expecting low-level volume access. File storage exposes a hierarchical file system and is useful when applications expect familiar file semantics or need multiple systems to share directories.

A common design mistake is choosing the most familiar AWS service and then forcing the workload to fit it. Document the protocol, concurrency pattern, latency sensitivity, throughput requirement, sharing model, durability expectation, and data lifecycle first. The service decision should follow from those facts.

Use Amazon S3 when the workload is naturally object-based

Amazon S3 is designed for object storage at very large scale. It is a strong fit for backups, static assets, data lakes, logs, analytics inputs, media, software artifacts, archival workflows, and many cloud-native applications.

S3 has a broad storage-class model. Frequently accessed data can remain in general-purpose classes, while less active or archival data can move to lower-cost tiers when the access pattern supports it. Lifecycle policies can automate those transitions and expiration rules, which is often more useful than trying to choose one permanent class on day one.

S3 is not a drop-in replacement for every file system or block device. An application that requires POSIX-style file semantics, a mounted boot volume, or highly specific file-system behavior may need EFS, FSx, or EBS instead. The access model should determine the storage choice before pricing or familiarity does.

Choose EBS for block storage attached to EC2

Amazon Elastic Block Store is designed to provide persistent block storage for EC2 instances. It is commonly used for operating-system volumes, transactional applications, and database workloads that expect a block device and predictable storage performance.

EBS design requires decisions about volume type, capacity, IOPS, throughput, snapshots, encryption, and failure boundaries. Performance should be sized from application evidence rather than intuition. A database with random I/O has different requirements from a throughput-heavy sequential workload, even if both occupy the same number of gigabytes.

Availability design matters as well. An EBS volume exists within an Availability Zone, so resilience depends on the surrounding architecture. Snapshots, application replication, database features, multi-AZ service choices, and recovery procedures all contribute to the real durability story. A storage service does not make an application highly available by itself.

Use EFS for shared Linux file access

Amazon Elastic File System provides managed file storage that can be mounted by multiple clients. It is useful when Linux workloads need a shared namespace without the team operating its own file-server cluster.

Common examples include shared application content, web-serving fleets, container workloads, home directories, development environments, and applications that require concurrent file access. Capacity can grow and shrink with usage, which removes much of the manual sizing associated with traditional file servers.

However, file storage should still be chosen because the application needs file semantics. If the workload writes immutable objects, S3 may be operationally simpler. If the application is a single EC2 database needing a high-performance volume, EBS may be more appropriate. Matching the storage abstraction to the software is usually more important than comparing headline throughput figures.

Use Amazon FSx when a specific managed file system matters

Amazon FSx is not one generic file service. It provides managed implementations for workloads that need particular file-system technologies. FSx for Windows File Server supports Windows file-sharing patterns and Active Directory integration. FSx for Lustre is oriented toward high-performance workloads such as HPC, analytics, and machine learning. FSx for NetApp ONTAP and FSx for OpenZFS address additional enterprise and file-system requirements.

This is especially useful during migrations. Some applications cannot easily be redesigned around object storage or a different file protocol. A managed file system can let the organization preserve required semantics while moving infrastructure responsibility into AWS.

Do not choose FSx merely because it sounds more advanced than EFS. Choose it when operating-system integration, protocol, performance model, data-management features, or a migration requirement matches one of the managed file systems it provides.

DataSync solves movement; Storage Gateway solves hybrid access

AWS DataSync and AWS Storage Gateway are frequently discussed alongside storage services, but they solve different problems. DataSync is a managed data-transfer service. It can move data between on-premises storage, other clouds, and AWS storage services such as S3, EFS, and FSx. That makes it useful for migrations, recurring transfers, replication, and large-scale data movement.

Storage Gateway is designed for hybrid access. It connects on-premises applications with AWS storage while presenting familiar file, volume, or tape interfaces. That can be valuable when an application remains on premises but the organization wants cloud-backed storage, backup, archive, or tiering.

The distinction is practical: if you need to copy a dataset from one location to another, think about DataSync. If an on-premises application needs continuing access through a familiar storage protocol while AWS provides the cloud storage behind it, Storage Gateway may be the better fit.

Protection, retention, and recovery are separate design decisions

Storage architecture is incomplete if it describes only the primary data location. Teams also need to decide how data is protected from deletion, corruption, operator error, ransomware, regional failure, and application-level mistakes.

Versioning, snapshots, replication, backup policies, immutability controls, retention settings, and recovery testing solve different parts of that problem. AWS Backup can centralize policy-based protection for supported AWS services, while native service capabilities may provide more workload-specific recovery controls.

Do not confuse durability with backup. A highly durable object can still be deleted by an authorized user or overwritten by an application. Do not confuse snapshots with a complete disaster-recovery plan either. A backup is useful only when the organization knows how to restore it, how long restoration takes, and which dependencies must also be recovered.

Cost depends on access, performance, transfer, and operations

Storage cost is not just dollars per gigabyte. Requests, provisioned performance, retrieval charges, data transfer, backup retention, replication, and operational effort can all change the total cost.

A cheaper storage class can become expensive if the application retrieves data constantly. A high-performance file system can be wasteful if the workload only needs occasional object access. Likewise, an apparently inexpensive self-managed file server may carry significant operational cost once patching, redundancy, monitoring, scaling, and backup are included.

Architects studying for AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate should practice making these trade-offs from scenarios: identify the access pattern, resilience requirement, performance target, and operating model, then choose the simplest service that satisfies them.

Consider a few contrasting cases. A static website with millions of media objects points naturally toward S3. A transactional database on EC2 needs block storage and may require carefully provisioned EBS performance. A fleet of Linux application servers that must share the same directory tree points toward EFS. A Windows application that depends on SMB and Active Directory integration may be better aligned with FSx for Windows File Server.

Migration scenarios introduce another layer. If a legacy NAS must remain available while data is transferred in stages, the answer may involve a managed file service plus DataSync. If an on-premises application must keep using a local file, volume, or tape interface while storage moves behind the scenes into AWS, Storage Gateway solves a different continuity problem.

Write these decisions as architecture statements: “We chose X because the workload requires Y, and we rejected Z because it would add this constraint.” That habit is useful for design reviews, certification scenarios, and later cost optimization.

Use a repeatable storage decision sequence

A practical sequence is to identify the storage abstraction, determine whether access is local or shared, quantify performance, define availability and recovery needs, decide how data will move into or out of AWS, and model lifecycle and cost.

That process naturally separates S3, EBS, EFS, and FSx before secondary services are considered. DataSync then addresses transfer, Storage Gateway addresses hybrid access, and backup or replication features address protection.

AWS storage keeps evolving, but this reasoning remains stable. Instead of asking which service is newest, ask what the application expects from storage and what failure, migration, security, and cost constraints the architecture must absorb. The right service is the one that fits those requirements with the least unnecessary complexity.

Security requirements should be included from the beginning. Decide who needs access, how identities are authenticated, how encryption keys are managed, whether public exposure is ever appropriate, and what audit evidence the organization needs. Storage choices can simplify or complicate those controls.

Performance testing should also resemble production. A file system can behave differently with thousands of small files than with a few large sequential objects. A block workload can be constrained by IOPS, throughput, queue depth, or instance limits. Validate the real bottleneck before paying for more performance.

For larger environments, document the decision explicitly. Record expected growth, peak throughput, recovery objectives, access protocol, data classification, encryption requirements, and the teams responsible for restoration. That turns storage from a one-time service selection into an operating decision that can be revisited as the workload changes.

Revisit the architecture when the workload changes shape. A system that began as one EC2 instance may later need shared storage; an analytics pipeline may outgrow its original file workflow; an acquisition may create a hybrid migration requirement. Good storage architecture leaves room to change services without treating the original choice as permanent.

Migration and modernization should be treated separately as well. Moving a file share into AWS does not automatically mean the application should be redesigned at the same time. Sometimes preserving semantics first and modernizing later reduces risk; in other cases the migration is the right moment to replace the storage pattern entirely.

AWS does not have one “best” storage service.
