PowerShell is a practical way to automate that configuration, especially in Windows-heavy operations environments or scripts that already use AWS.Tools modules.

The version detail matters in 2026. AWS Tools for PowerShell V5 became generally available in June 2025, and AWS has announced end-of-support for V4. Existing V4 scripts may continue to look familiar, but new automation should be checked against V5 behavior and the current modular AWS.Tools packages. The core SNS cmdlets remain straightforward: create a topic, subscribe endpoints, publish messages, and manage attributes or permissions.

Use the modular SNS toolset and an explicit AWS context

For new PowerShell automation, install or update the modular AWS.Tools packages and load the SNS module you actually need. Keep region and credentials explicit enough that a script cannot silently deploy to the wrong account or Region. In automated environments, prefer IAM roles or other temporary credentials over long-lived access keys stored in profiles or scripts.

A minimal session should answer three questions before it creates anything: which AWS account is active, which Region is active, and which principal is authorizing the calls. Treat those checks as part of deployment safety rather than optional diagnostics.

The current SNS PowerShell cmdlet `New-SNSTopic` calls the CreateTopic API and returns the topic ARN. Topic creation is idempotent for a topic name owned by the requester, so rerunning the command returns the existing ARN rather than creating a second topic with the same name.

$topicArn = New-SNSTopic -Name 'orders-events'
$topicArn

The ARN should become a variable or output of your deployment workflow because subscriptions, publishing, policies, encryption settings, and monitoring configuration all reference it. Avoid rebuilding ARNs as strings when the service can return the authoritative identifier.

Subscribe endpoints according to delivery semantics

Use `Connect-SNSNotification` to create a subscription. The protocol and endpoint must match the subscriber type. An SQS endpoint uses a queue ARN; an HTTPS endpoint uses a URL; email subscriptions require recipient confirmation before delivery begins. AWS also requires confirmation for certain cross-account and HTTP(S) subscription cases, so an automation run may successfully create a pending subscription without making it immediately active.

Connect-SNSNotification `
 -TopicARN $topicArn `
 -Protocol SQS `
 -Endpoint $queueArn

For application systems, SQS and Lambda are usually easier to operate than human endpoints because they support machine processing, retry patterns, and measurable failure handling. Choose the subscriber based on delivery requirements rather than convenience.

`Publish-SNSMessage` sends a message to the topic. Production systems should treat the message body and attributes as a contract. Consumers need to know which fields are required, how versions are represented, and whether a change is backward compatible.

Publish-SNSMessage `
 -TopicArn $topicArn `
 -Message '{"orderId":"A-1042","status":"ready"}' `
 -Subject 'Order status'

Message attributes can carry routing metadata that subscribers use for filtering. Keep business data in the payload and use attributes deliberately for properties such as event type, environment, tenant, or severity when those values need to drive routing.

Filtering lets one topic support different consumers

Without a filter policy, a subscription receives every message published to the topic. SNS filter policies let individual subscriptions accept only messages whose attributes or JSON body satisfy defined conditions. This can reduce duplicated routing logic in publishers and consumers.

Filtering is useful when one event stream serves multiple downstream actions—for example, billing consumes only paid orders while fulfillment consumes only shippable orders. The design is still a contract: producers must populate the fields used by filters consistently, and teams should allow for AWS’s eventual consistency when filter policies are changed.

SNS retries some delivery failures according to the destination protocol, but retries are not a substitute for recovery design. A subscription can use an Amazon SQS dead-letter queue so undeliverable messages are retained for analysis or reprocessing instead of disappearing after retry policy exhaustion.

That pattern is especially important for asynchronous systems because the publisher may have completed successfully long before a subscriber fails. Monitor delivery status and dead-letter queues, alert on accumulation, and define who owns replay. A message platform is reliable only when failure is visible and recoverable.

Secure topics with least privilege and encryption

AWS recommends preventing public topic access, granting least privilege, using IAM roles for applications, enforcing encrypted transport, and considering server-side encryption with AWS KMS. Topic policies should name the principals and actions that genuinely need access instead of using broad wildcards.

For sensitive event payloads, encryption at rest is one control; data minimization is another. Do not publish secrets or unnecessary personal data merely because the topic can encrypt them. Consider whether subscribers need the complete payload or only an identifier that lets an authorized system retrieve the underlying record.

Treat scripts as deployable infrastructure

A useful PowerShell script should be repeatable, parameterized, and safe to rerun. Validate input, surface the created ARNs, stop on unexpected errors, and avoid making destructive changes as an accidental side effect. For larger environments, you may move stable infrastructure into CloudFormation or another infrastructure-as-code system while retaining PowerShell for orchestration, diagnostics, or administrative workflows.

The AWS Certified Developer – Associate path and DVA-C02 exam connect event-driven services with permissions, deployment, monitoring, and application troubleshooting. The useful skill is not memorizing one cmdlet; it is being able to design a message path that behaves predictably when systems fail.

Verify the full message path, not just topic creation

A script that returns a topic ARN has proved very little. Publish a controlled test message, confirm the intended subscriber receives it, verify that an unintended subscriber does not receive it when filters apply, and test what happens when the destination is unavailable. Check logs and metrics so the operational evidence is familiar before an incident.

That end-to-end test is the real definition of successful SNS automation. Topic creation is the first API call. A production-ready implementation also proves authentication, routing, delivery, filtering, observability, failure retention, and recovery.

Permissions between SNS and its subscribers deserve explicit testing. An SQS subscription, for example, needs a queue policy that allows the SNS topic to send messages. Cross-account designs require careful ownership and policy handling. A successful subscription API call does not prove the downstream resource will accept delivery, so policy validation belongs in the same end-to-end test as publishing.

Idempotence is especially important when PowerShell runs from a deployment pipeline. Topic creation is naturally idempotent for a name, but subscriptions, policies, filters, and tags can drift. A robust script should inspect existing state before creating or changing resources, compare that state with the intended configuration, and report the change it made. Repeated runs should converge on the same result instead of creating operational clutter.

For message filtering, write test events that should match and should not match. Production incidents often come from a filter that looks correct but uses the wrong attribute name, data type, case, or body path. Because filter-policy changes can take time to become fully consistent, deployment automation should also avoid assuming that a policy update is instantaneous everywhere.

Observability should include both successful and failed delivery paths. Record publish failures, monitor SNS delivery metrics where supported, watch the dead-letter queue, and correlate subscriber processing failures with the originating event. When the architecture spans SNS, SQS, Lambda, and an application database, the operational question is not whether each service is healthy in isolation but whether a business event can travel through the complete chain without being lost or duplicated unexpectedly.

Separate standard and FIFO topic requirements in your design. FIFO messaging adds ordering and deduplication semantics but also introduces message-group and deduplication concepts that standard topics do not require. Choose FIFO because a business process truly needs ordered, exactly-once-style publication semantics within its supported model, not because the name sounds more reliable.

Finally, keep deployment and application ownership clear. Infrastructure code may create the topic and subscriptions, while application teams own message schemas and retry behavior. Document that boundary. Many messaging incidents happen when everyone assumes another team owns the contract, filter, queue policy, or replay procedure.

Treat naming and tagging as operational design too. Topic names should communicate purpose without embedding secrets or temporary ownership, and tags should identify environment, application, cost owner, and other governance fields your organization relies on. Consistent metadata makes it easier to find orphaned topics, apply policy, investigate cost, and determine who should be contacted when delivery alarms fire. Messaging resources are infrastructure, and they deserve the same inventory discipline as compute or databases.

For reusable automation, expose inputs such as topic name, Region, tags, KMS key, subscriber endpoint, and filter policy as parameters rather than editing constants inside the script. Validate those inputs at the boundary and print a concise deployment summary. That makes the same code safer across development, staging, and production accounts and reduces accidental drift between environments. For destructive cleanup steps, require explicit resource identifiers and a confirmation boundary so a reusable script cannot remove the wrong topic or subscription.

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) provides managed publish/subscribe messaging: publishers send a message to a topic, and SNS delivers copies to subscribed endpoints such as Amazon SQS queues, Lambda functions, HTTPS endpoints, email, or mobile channels.
