Amazon CloudSearch still has current AWS documentation and remains a managed search service for websites and applications. What used to be called Amazon Elasticsearch Service, however, was renamed Amazon OpenSearch Service in 2021. OpenSearch Service supports the OpenSearch engine and legacy Elasticsearch OSS versions, so a modern AWS decision should compare CloudSearch with OpenSearch Service rather than treating “Elasticsearch Service” as the current product name.

The two services solve overlapping problems but expose very different operating models. CloudSearch is intentionally narrow: define a search domain, configure fields and indexing, upload documents, and query the service using its search APIs. OpenSearch Service exposes a broader search-and-analytics platform with richer query, aggregation, observability, visualization, and ecosystem capabilities. That extra power is useful, but it also creates more design choices.

The decision is also constrained by availability. AWS now states that Amazon CloudSearch is no longer available to new customers. Existing CloudSearch customers can continue using the service and, under AWS’s current allowlist model, retain the capabilities they previously had. That changes the comparison: new AWS search projects should evaluate OpenSearch Service or another current search architecture, while existing CloudSearch customers must decide whether their working domains should remain in place or be migrated.

CloudSearch is a focused application-search service

CloudSearch is designed around the idea of a managed search domain. Developers define index fields, push searchable documents, configure text-processing behavior, and issue queries through the service. AWS handles provisioning and scaling of the underlying search infrastructure, allowing an application team to avoid operating search servers directly.

That simplicity is its main strength for organizations that already use it. A product catalog, document collection, forum archive, or site-search feature can be modeled without building a full search cluster. CloudSearch supports text and literal fields, multiple query parsers, field weighting, facets, highlighting, and other conventional application-search features. For an existing allowlisted customer whose CloudSearch implementation performs well, there is no architectural rule that requires immediate replacement merely because another service has a broader feature set.

The constraint is equally clear: CloudSearch is not the center of AWS’s modern search-and-analytics ecosystem. New requirements should be tested against what the service actually provides rather than assuming parity with OpenSearch.

OpenSearch Service is broader than the old Elasticsearch comparison implies

Amazon OpenSearch Service evolved from the managed Elasticsearch offering, but the current service is more than a renamed endpoint. It supports OpenSearch domains, search and log analytics, dashboards, security controls, integrations, and a rapidly developing set of search and observability capabilities. For developers, this creates a platform that can support both user-facing search and operational analytics.

The richness comes with architectural responsibility. Teams must think about indexes, shards, mappings, query patterns, storage, cluster sizing, upgrades, access control, and workload isolation. Managed OpenSearch removes hardware administration, but it does not remove the need to understand the search engine. A poorly designed index or query pattern can still create latency, cost, or scaling problems.

This is a broader version of a common cloud principle: managed does not mean decision-free. Cloud architecture still matters because a managed service shifts operational work without eliminating application design.

Query complexity is one of the clearest dividing lines

CloudSearch provides several query parsers, including simple and structured queries, and it can handle phrase search, fielded queries, Boolean logic, facets, and ranking controls. That is enough for many conventional site-search use cases. Its query model is comparatively opinionated, which can make implementation easier when the requirements fit.

OpenSearch offers a much richer query DSL, aggregations, analyzers, mappings, scoring controls, and search patterns. That flexibility is important when search relevance needs continuous tuning, when the same data supports analytics, or when the application performs complex filtering and aggregation. It also helps when teams already know Elasticsearch-style concepts and want to use that operational knowledge with the current OpenSearch platform.

A useful design exercise is to write the five most important production queries before choosing the service. Include filters, sorting, aggregations, pagination, relevance behavior, and expected response time. If those queries fit comfortably within CloudSearch, its narrower model may be sufficient. If the queries immediately require engine-level capabilities, OpenSearch is the more natural fit.

Operational data pushes the decision strongly toward OpenSearch

CloudSearch was built primarily for application search. OpenSearch Service is widely used for logs, metrics, observability, and security analytics as well as text search. That distinction matters because operational data behaves differently from a product catalog. Logs arrive continuously, volume can spike, retention changes over time, and users often need aggregations, dashboards, and exploratory queries.

If the search requirement is connected to operational telemetry, OpenSearch is usually the service that matches the workload shape. Teams may index application events, infrastructure logs, audit records, or traces and then use dashboards or queries to investigate behavior. The platform becomes part of the observability architecture rather than only a feature behind a search box.

That does not mean every log should automatically go to OpenSearch. Data volume, retention, ingestion cost, and query frequency still need to be modeled. A high-volume workload can become expensive if the team stores everything in a search engine without a lifecycle strategy.

Migration should be driven by requirements, not product fashion

Existing CloudSearch users should begin by inventorying what works. Measure query latency, indexing throughput, field mappings, relevance requirements, availability, cost, and operational incidents. Then identify gaps. A migration is justified when the new platform solves an important problem: richer analytics, more advanced relevance, better integration with a broader search ecosystem, or requirements the current service cannot meet.

The migration itself is not a simple endpoint change. Query syntax, indexing behavior, field types, analyzers, scoring, and client libraries may differ. The safest approach is to build a representative OpenSearch index, replay production-like queries, compare relevance and latency, and run both systems long enough to understand the operational difference.

For organizations planning broader AWS modernization, it can help to place search alongside the rest of the AWS service architecture rather than evaluating it as an isolated product. Identity, networking, encryption, monitoring, and backup choices affect search just as they affect databases and application platforms.

Relevance quality should be tested with real user queries

Search is successful only when users find useful results. Before migration or service selection, collect representative queries, expected results, misspellings, filters, and edge cases from the application. Build a small relevance test set and compare how each platform ranks the same content. Measure not only latency but also whether the desired documents appear near the top, whether filters behave correctly, and how much tuning is required.

This is particularly important when moving from CloudSearch to OpenSearch because engine flexibility can change scoring behavior. More tunable analyzers and queries create more opportunities to improve search, but they also create more ways to make ranking inconsistent. Treat relevance as a product metric that can regress, not as a one-time configuration step.

Cost depends on workload shape more than the service label

Search economics are driven by data size, indexing rate, query complexity, replication, retention, and peak traffic. A small search domain with modest traffic is a very different workload from a multi-terabyte analytics cluster processing continuous log streams. Teams should compare the architecture they actually need, not an arbitrary small-instance price.

Operational skill also has a cost. OpenSearch gives teams more power, but someone must understand shard sizing, index lifecycle, mappings, cluster health, and query behavior. CloudSearch can reduce that learning burden for simpler use cases. The lower-feature service can be cheaper overall if it meets the product requirement with less engineering effort.

At larger scale, cloud cost management should connect search spending to a unit that matters: indexed documents, search requests, retained gigabytes, customer sessions, or another business measure. That makes it easier to see whether additional search capability creates enough value to justify the cost.

Security and access patterns should be designed early

Both services live inside a larger AWS security model. Applications need controlled access, encrypted transport, carefully scoped identities, and monitoring around administrative actions. With OpenSearch, teams also need to understand domain access, fine-grained permissions where used, network placement, and the way users or services authenticate to dashboards and APIs.

Search data can be sensitive. Logs may contain account identifiers, URLs, query strings, or operational details. Product indexes may contain unpublished catalog data or customer-specific content. Data classification should therefore influence what is indexed, how long it is retained, and which users can search it.

The search engine should not become a shadow data warehouse with weaker governance. Keep source-of-truth ownership clear, minimize unnecessary sensitive fields, and treat exported or replicated search data as a governed copy of production information.

For new AWS search projects, CloudSearch is no longer a greenfield option

The old “CloudSearch vs Elasticsearch” framing is now mainly useful for legacy architecture and migration decisions. Amazon Elasticsearch Service became Amazon OpenSearch Service, and AWS states that CloudSearch is no longer available to new customers. New projects should therefore evaluate OpenSearch Service and other current search patterns rather than planning a new CloudSearch dependency.

Existing CloudSearch customers have a different decision. Keep CloudSearch when the service continues to meet product, security, support, and cost requirements and migration would create little value. Evaluate migration when the application needs capabilities CloudSearch cannot provide, when search is becoming part of a wider analytics or observability platform, or when reducing legacy-service dependency is itself an architectural objective.

The best decision is the one that matches the workload you can describe and test. Write the queries, model the data, estimate the traffic, define the operational ownership, and compare relevance and migration cost. For existing customers, that process answers whether to keep or modernize; for new customers, it prevents an outdated service comparison from becoming a new dependency.

An article framed as “AWS CloudSearch vs Elasticsearch” needs a 2026 correction before the technical comparison begins.
