The current Azure AI engineering exam is AI-103 Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure, and the transition is substantial. AI-103 is centered on Microsoft Foundry, generative AI, agents, retrieval, evaluation, multimodal workflows, information extraction, observability, security, and operationalization. Candidates who continue using an AI-102-only course risk preparing for a role definition Microsoft has already replaced.

Some AI-102 skills still transfer: planning AI solutions, language, speech, vision, search, responsible AI, security, monitoring, and integration. But AI-103 gives 30–35% of scored content to generative AI and agentic solutions and expects explicit work with RAG, tool-augmented flows, multi-agent systems, model evaluation, Foundry SDKs, guardrails, and observability.

The right transition strategy is to preserve durable Azure AI engineering and add the new application-and-agent architecture rather than trying to force every legacy topic into the current blueprint.

Start by mapping what transfers from AI-102

Use the AI-102 retirement transition and the AI-102-to-AI-103 skill mapping to separate reusable skills from retired exam framing.

Core experience with Azure AI services, application integration, authentication, responsible AI, language, speech, vision, and search still helps. The main gap is that those services now sit inside a Foundry-centered application and agent ecosystem.

Do not restart from beginner material if you already have strong AI-102 foundations. Spend the transition time on the new high-weight skills instead.

Create a migration table from your AI-102 notes. Mark every skill as directly reusable, conceptually reusable but implemented differently, or genuinely new in AI-103. This prevents two opposite mistakes: throwing away strong Azure AI foundations or assuming that legacy cognitive-service preparation covers the new agentic and generative workload emphasis.

Foundry is the operating context for AI-103

AI-103 expects candidates to plan and manage AI solutions in Microsoft Foundry. That includes selecting services and models, configuring projects and deployments, integrating CI/CD, managing quotas and scaling, controlling cost, and securing access.

Build one Foundry project that you keep throughout preparation. Add a model deployment, retrieval, an agent, monitoring, and a deployment pipeline so the relationships become familiar.

Treat environment design as part of AI engineering. Private networking, managed identity, role policies, quotas, rate limits, and deployment choices affect reliability and security just as much as prompt design.

Foundry projects should be treated like software environments. Use separate configuration for development and production-like testing, keep secrets out of code, understand deployment names and quotas, and version prompts or workflow definitions where practical. AI engineering becomes more reliable when ordinary software-engineering discipline surrounds the model calls.

Generative applications require more than prompting

Review foundation models, context, and inference and then build RAG and tool-augmented workflows. AI-103 expects you to implement retrieval, multistep reasoning, connectors, SDK integration, and evaluation of relevance, quality, safety, and fabrication risk.

Prompt engineering is one control among many. Retrieval quality, document chunking, indexing, grounding, tool behavior, context limits, model choice, and post-processing all influence output.

Instrument the application so you can see latency, token use, failures, grounding quality, and safety events. Without evidence, optimization becomes guesswork.

RAG practice should measure retrieval separately from generation. If the wrong document is retrieved, prompt tuning may not solve the problem. Evaluate search relevance, chunk boundaries, metadata filtering, freshness, and grounding before judging the final answer. AI-103 increasingly expects this systems view rather than treating RAG as a single feature toggle.

Agents create a new engineering responsibility

AI-103 asks candidates to define agent roles, goals, conversation tracking, tool schemas, memory, retrieval, functions, custom tools, and orchestrated multi-agent systems. It also includes autonomous or semiautonomous workflows with safeguards and approval flows.

Use agent security patterns to understand prompt injection, tool abuse, data leakage, and excessive agency. An agent with privileged tools is an identity-and-authorization problem as well as an AI problem.

Start with one agent and a narrow tool. Only add memory, additional tools, or orchestration after you can explain why the simpler design is insufficient.

Agent design should define failure containment. Decide what happens if a tool times out, returns malformed data, or attempts an action outside the allowed scope. Limit retries, validate parameters, and use human approval for high-impact operations. Robust agents are engineered workflows, not open-ended model loops.

Evaluation is now a first-class engineering discipline

AI-103 explicitly includes evaluating models and applications for fabrications, relevance, quality, and safety. That means candidates need test sets and repeatable measurement rather than relying on a few impressive prompts.

Define expected behavior before evaluating. For a RAG assistant, measure whether retrieved evidence is relevant and whether the answer is grounded. For an agent, measure task success, tool selection, safety, and failure behavior.

Use automated evaluation where appropriate but include human review for subjective or high-risk outcomes. Evaluation should influence model, prompt, retrieval, and workflow changes.

Evaluation datasets should include normal, edge, adversarial, and safety-sensitive cases. Track regressions when prompts, models, retrieval, or tools change. A model upgrade can improve average quality while breaking one critical business scenario; production AI teams need evidence before accepting the change.

Computer vision and multimodal work is broader than legacy classification

The current blueprint includes image and video generation, visual question answering, captions, alt text, multimodal understanding, Content Understanding, object/region identification, and responsible AI controls for visual content.

Build a workflow that accepts an image and text instruction, then returns structured or descriptive output. Next add a safety or policy check so the solution is more than a demo.

Multimodal systems can also carry indirect prompt injection through embedded text, so input handling belongs in the threat model.

Multimodal security deserves explicit testing. Images can contain embedded text that influences a model, generated media can violate policy, and visual content can expose sensitive information. Combine safety filters with application-level validation and logging instead of assuming the model endpoint provides complete protection.

Text, speech, and information extraction remain important

AI-103 still covers entity extraction, topics, summaries, structured output, sentiment, translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and multimodal audio reasoning. It also includes document and media extraction through Content Understanding and retrieval pipelines.

These workloads now connect naturally to agents. A document extraction pipeline can supply grounded knowledge; speech can become an agent modality; structured JSON can feed downstream automation.

The engineering challenge is composing capabilities safely and observably rather than treating each cognitive service as a separate exam chapter.

Information-extraction systems should validate structured output before downstream automation trusts it. A document analyzer can misread a field, and an agent can confidently act on that error. Schemas, confidence checks, business rules, and human review for high-risk cases turn extraction into an engineering system rather than a demo.

Operational AI engineering includes cost, security, and monitoring

Use AI solution architecture skills to connect models, RAG, agents, integration, safety, evaluation, and cost. AI-103 expects quota management, rate limits, scaling, cost footprints, performance monitoring, data-ingestion quality, index health, and relevance performance.

Security includes managed identity, private networking, keyless credentials, role policy, guardrails, auditing, provenance, and approval workflows. Operational maturity is part of the exam because production AI systems fail in ordinary cloud ways as well as model-specific ways.

Monitor both infrastructure and AI behavior. An endpoint can be available while answer quality collapses or retrieval becomes stale.

AI operations should monitor quality as well as uptime. Track grounding relevance, safety events, tool failures, token use, rate limits, latency, and cost. A healthy HTTP endpoint can still deliver poor or unsafe answers, so traditional availability monitoring is necessary but insufficient.

Migration from AI-102 material should also remove obsolete mental boundaries between ‘cognitive services’ and ‘generative AI.’ Current AI-103 scenarios may combine search, document understanding, language, multimodal models, agents, and classic Azure services inside one application. Practice reasoning about the end-to-end workflow rather than assigning every requirement to a separate product chapter.

Keep architecture diagrams for your projects. Show the user or calling service, Foundry project, model deployment, retrieval store, agent tools, identity, private network path, telemetry, evaluation, and any approval gate. If you cannot explain the trust and data flow from the diagram, the implementation is probably too opaque to troubleshoot safely.

Before scheduling, perform a cold build of one representative solution without a tutorial. Use documentation when needed, but make the architecture decisions yourself. The exercise should include deployment, retrieval or tool integration, evaluation, monitoring, and a security control. That is a much stronger AI-103 readiness signal than finishing a long AI-102 video course.

Use AI-103 readiness evidence, not AI-102 nostalgia

The current AI-103 readiness signals and Microsoft AI certifications are better planning tools than an old AI-102 course outline.

A ready candidate can plan a Foundry solution, build and secure RAG, implement a tool-using agent, evaluate output, add multimodal or extraction capabilities, and monitor the system in production-like conditions.

The retirement does not invalidate your past work. It changes where the role is heading. Preserve Azure AI engineering fundamentals and make generative, agentic, evaluative, and operational skills the center of current preparation.

The most useful final project is a small end-to-end agentic application with private or managed identity, retrieval, one controlled tool, evaluation, tracing, and a deployment workflow. If you can explain every component, failure mode, and guardrail, you are preparing for AI-103 rather than studying AI-102 under a new name.

AI-102 retired on June 30, 2026.
