The current GMAT exam contains 20 Data Insights questions, and the section counts toward the total GMAT score alongside Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.

The current GMAT has 64 questions in total and lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus one optional 10-minute break. Quantitative Reasoning has 21 questions in 45 minutes, Verbal Reasoning has 23 in 45 minutes, and Data Insights has 20 in 45 minutes. That gives Data Insights an average of 2 minutes and 15 seconds per question—but the average is misleading because some questions require multiple steps or multiple responses.

The GMAT practice test is most valuable when you review not only which answers were wrong, but which Data Insights tasks consumed too much time and why.

Data Insights contains five distinct question types

The official section includes Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis.

These formats are deliberately different. Data Sufficiency asks whether the information provided is enough to answer a question. Multi-Source Reasoning asks you to integrate information from multiple tabs or sources. Table Analysis works with sortable data. Graphics Interpretation uses charts and graphs. Two-Part Analysis combines two related decisions in one response format.

The current GMAT format matters because older GMAT materials often place Data Sufficiency inside Quantitative Reasoning or focus on the retired Integrated Reasoning section. In the current exam, Data Sufficiency belongs to Data Insights.

Data Sufficiency rewards disciplined sufficiency logic, not full calculation

The fastest way to lose time on Data Sufficiency is to solve more of the problem than the question requires.

Your task is to decide whether statement 1 alone is sufficient, statement 2 alone is sufficient, both are required, each is independently sufficient, or the information remains insufficient.

The Data Sufficiency practice should train a consistent sequence. Understand what must be determined. Evaluate statement 1 without using statement 2. Evaluate statement 2 independently. Combine only when necessary.

Be especially careful with variables, signs, integer restrictions, geometry diagrams, and hidden multiple possibilities. Finding one solution is not enough if the problem could produce another valid answer under the same statement.

Multi-Source Reasoning should start with a map of the sources

Multi-Source Reasoning can feel overwhelming because several tabs of text, tables, or graphics appear together. Reading every source line by line before looking at the task is often inefficient.

Start by identifying what each source contains. One tab may describe a policy, another may contain financial figures, and another may show customer data. Then read the question and return to the source most likely to contain the required evidence.

The official GMAT strategy guidance makes the same point: understand what each source is about instead of assuming every detail must be memorized.

Also watch for contradictions. A Data Insights question may test whether two sources disagree or whether one source provides the evidence needed to interpret another.

Table Analysis is closer to spreadsheet reasoning than to raw arithmetic

Table Analysis questions provide sortable data and ask you to determine whether statements are true, whether conditions are met, or which records satisfy a rule.

The challenge is often filtering the right subset before calculating anything.

Identify the relevant columns. Sort when it reveals rank or grouping. Ignore fields that do not affect the question. Pay attention to units, percentages, totals, and whether the table values are already aggregated.

A common mistake is to calculate across the entire table when the question applies only to one category or date range.

Practice with real spreadsheets as well as GMAT questions. The underlying skill is extracting the correct decision from structured data, not mastering a proprietary interface.

Graphics Interpretation requires reading the axes before reading the answer choices

Graphs can make a question look easier than it is. Before interpreting the trend, identify the chart type, axis labels, units, scale, categories, and whether the axes start at zero.

A small visual difference can represent a large numerical change if the scale is compressed. A percentage can describe a share, growth rate, or percentage-point difference depending on the context.

Read the title and legend. Then summarize the graph in one sentence before choosing an answer: “Revenue rises while margin declines,” “Category B has the highest median,” or “The relationship becomes weaker after point X.”

This reduces the chance of choosing an answer that matches the visual shape but not the actual variables.

Two-Part Analysis often tests relationships rather than two independent questions

Two-Part Analysis presents two response columns with a shared set of answer options. The two tasks may be independent or logically connected.

First decide whether solving one side constrains the other. If they are dependent, use the relationship instead of treating them as two separate full problems.

These questions can be quantitative, verbal, or mixed. You might select two values that satisfy an equation, two roles that match conditions, or two conclusions that fit a scenario.

Read the column headings carefully. The answer choices may be simple while the exact task is encoded in the headings.

The on-screen calculator is useful only when arithmetic is the bottleneck. Data Insights allows an on-screen calculator. Use it for arithmetic that would otherwise be slow or error-prone, not as a replacement for reasoning.

If the challenge is determining which ratio to compute, a calculator cannot choose the ratio for you. If the problem requires sorting, inference, or sufficiency analysis, entering numbers immediately may waste time.

Estimation can also be faster than exact calculation when answer choices are widely separated.

During practice, note which questions genuinely benefit from the calculator and which became slower because you reached for it too early.

Question Review & Edit changes pacing—but only slightly. The current GMAT lets you bookmark questions for review and edit up to three answers within a section, subject to the exam’s review rules.

This feature should reduce the pressure to solve every difficult question perfectly on the first pass. If a question is consuming too much time, make the best defensible choice, flag it, and move on.

However, the review feature is not an unlimited second attempt. You still need enough time at the end of the section to revisit flagged questions, and only a limited number of answers can be changed.

Build a review buffer into practice. A strategy that uses all 45 minutes before the final question leaves no benefit from the tool.

Twenty questions make time allocation more important than raw speed

With 45 minutes for 20 questions, one four-minute problem can consume the time of nearly two average questions.

Use checkpoints rather than one rigid per-question timer. After five questions, are you near the expected time? After ten, are you halfway through the section? If you fall behind, identify whether one format is creating the delay.

Some Multi-Source Reasoning sets can support more than one question, so the initial reading time may pay off across several items. Other questions can be solved rapidly once you recognize the task.

The goal is not identical timing. It is preventing one stubborn problem from damaging the rest of the section.

An error log should classify the reasoning failure

A GMAT error log matters in Data Insights because misses have different causes.

Classify errors such as: wrong source selected, unit missed, data sufficiency logic broken, calculation mistake, graph misread, assumption added, table filter missed, question stem misread, or time pressure.

Then count the patterns. If most mistakes are from Multi-Source Reasoning, more algebra drills will not fix them. If Data Sufficiency errors come from forgetting alternate values, practice sufficiency logic rather than speed.

The review should tell you what to study next.

Data Insights should be practiced with unfamiliar subject matter. The GMAT intentionally presents business, scientific, social, and quantitative contexts that may be unfamiliar. The required information is provided in the question.

Do not let outside knowledge override the data. A scenario may involve a company you know, an industry you recognize, or a scientific topic you studied. Answer from the presented evidence.

This is particularly important in Multi-Source Reasoning, where one answer can sound realistic but lack support in the provided sources.

The skill being tested is decision-making from information, not subject-matter expertise.

Section order can affect your Data Insights performance. The current GMAT allows candidates to choose the order of the three sections. That makes fatigue management part of the strategy.

If Data Insights is your strongest section, you may prefer to begin with it while fresh or save it for later when confidence is useful. If it is your weakest, taking it first may protect it from end-of-exam fatigue—or may increase anxiety before you settle into the test.

Test different section orders in full-length practice exams. Choose the one that produces the most stable overall performance, not the one that feels theoretically ideal.

The best Data Insights preparation combines skill drills and full-section practice

Individual question-type drills help you learn the logic. Full timed sections teach pacing, switching, and fatigue.

Use both. Spend a few days isolating Data Sufficiency or Table Analysis, then complete mixed 45-minute sections where you do not know which format appears next.

GMAT scores and percentiles provide context for setting goals, but Data Insights preparation should remain focused on repeatable reasoning rather than chasing one practice-section number.

The section is 20 questions in 45 minutes and includes five question types. The strongest strategy is to recognize the task quickly, use only the relevant data, control time at the section level, and review mistakes by reasoning pattern. Data Insights becomes much more manageable once every format has a defined method instead of feeling like one unpredictable collection of charts and numbers.

GMAT Data Insights is difficult because it combines quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, data interpretation, and decision-making inside one 45-minute section.
