An administrator rarely manages identity without affecting resources, deploys compute without networking, restricts a storage account without thinking about DNS and permissions, or configures monitoring without considering recovery. The current Microsoft AZ-104 separates these skills for measurement, but strong candidates learn to reconnect them into one operating model.

Azure administration becomes easier to reason about when those domains are treated as one operating system. Identity and governance define who can change resources and under which constraints; networking determines how services communicate; compute and storage carry the workload; monitoring and recovery show whether the environment continues to meet its requirements. That connected view is also the practical scope behind the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate role.

Map the dependencies before choosing an Azure fix

The five AZ-104 domains are helpful as a syllabus, but an operational change follows dependencies rather than chapter headings. Consider an internal web application running on a VM or managed compute platform, reading a Blob container through a private endpoint. A support ticket reports that users can load the front page but the report export fails. The VM or app may be healthy, the storage account may exist, and the private endpoint may show approved. None of those facts proves the failing export path is healthy.

Use a layered map. Each layer has an observable question, an appropriate source of evidence, and a different kind of remedy. correlated logs, alert history, restore point and a tested recovery procedure.

Follow one request through the map

Start by reproducing the export from the same client and identity that encountered the error. If the hostname resolves to a public endpoint where a private address was intended, inspect the private zone and hybrid forwarding path. Confirm the name-resolution behavior before touching security rules. When DNS resolves correctly, test TCP reachability from the actual source and inspect effective routes or filtering. Only after a usable path exists should the operator investigate whether the application principal has Blob data permissions or whether the requested container and object state are correct.

If authorization fails, understand the difference between being Contributor on a resource group and having a Blob data role. Azure RBAC defines access using principal, role, and scope; data-plane actions are not always covered by generic management-plane roles. The least-privilege role guide explains the appropriate access model, while private endpoint DNS troubleshooting describes the different network cause.

A change can migrate the fault to the next layer

Imagine DNS was repaired and connectivity now succeeds, but the export still returns an authorization error. That is progress, not proof the DNS fix was wrong: one blocked layer previously hid another. Change one condition at a time and record which symptom disappeared. In a genuine incident, blindly relaxing all controls can create an exposure without correcting the underlying permission. Recheck the user’s original operation after every fix.

This also explains why monitoring belongs in architecture discussions. A VM running at normal CPU does not prove the Blob request succeeded. An application dependency error, a storage request log and an Azure Monitor alert tell different parts of the story. The Azure Monitor incident guide goes into observable signals; a restoration procedure still needs a real test.

Before deploying a change, fill in a small impact record: the affected identity, the expected DNS and traffic path, the resource’s configuration, the monitoring signal, the owner of rollback, and the recovery dependency. That model is why Azure administration fits together. The exam domains are not interchangeable, but they are connected by the result an operator must deliver.

The control plane is the frame for every AZ-104 decision

Every Azure resource exists inside a hierarchy and is managed through a control plane. Subscriptions and resource groups create administrative scope. Microsoft Entra identities represent users, groups, service principals, and managed identities. Azure RBAC determines what principals can do at a given scope. Azure Policy evaluates or enforces resource configuration. Locks protect against particular management actions.

Those controls are not an introductory chapter that disappears once you move to storage or compute. They continue to determine who can deploy a VM, who can alter a network, which storage configurations are allowed, and whether an application can access another service. That is why Azure RBAC and least privilege and Azure Policy, locks, and resource governance belong at the center of the AZ-104 mental model.

When studying any later domain, ask two control-plane questions: who is allowed to make this change, and at what scope does the configuration apply?

This also gives you a practical troubleshooting order. Confirm scope and authorization first, then resource configuration, then network reachability and name resolution, then application or service behavior, and finally the monitoring evidence that proves where the path broke. The exact sequence can vary by scenario, but the discipline prevents random clicking. AZ-104 questions often include several true statements about Azure; the skill is identifying which administrative control is causally connected to the stated problem.

That is the practical value of AZ-104 preparation. You are not trying to memorize the largest possible catalog of Azure features. You are building a reliable method for deciding where a control belongs, how dependencies interact, and what evidence proves that an environment is working as intended.

Compute, storage, and networking form the workload triangle

Most practical Azure scenarios involve a workload that runs somewhere, stores or consumes data somewhere, and communicates across a network path. The implementation may use virtual machines, scale sets, containers, or App Service for compute. It may use blob or file storage. It may communicate inside a virtual network, across peering, through a load balancer, or to a service reached through a private endpoint.

Studying these domains separately helps you learn individual controls, but integration reveals the real dependencies. A VM can be healthy while its application fails because DNS resolves incorrectly. A storage account can have the correct network rule while access still fails because the workload identity lacks permission. An application can have the correct identity while a private endpoint or route prevents traffic from reaching the destination.

A useful lab therefore connects all three. Deploy a workload, give it data to access, place it behind the desired network boundary, and then test the entire path. Once it works, break one control and diagnose the symptom.

Identity follows the workload, not just the administrator

AZ-104 identity questions are not limited to human administrators. Applications and Azure resources often need identities of their own. That changes the way you reason about credentials. Instead of storing a reusable secret where possible, a workload can use managed identity and receive only the permissions it needs.

For every cross-domain scenario, identify the caller and target. An administrator might deploy a resource, while the running application later accesses Key Vault, storage, or another service. Those are different authorization events. If you collapse them into one vague idea of “permissions,” you can choose a role at the wrong scope or solve the wrong identity problem.

Keep role assignment, authentication, network reachability, and resource configuration separate. All four may be required for a successful request, but each has its own failure evidence and remedy.

Private access connects permissions, network design, and DNS

Private endpoints are a good example of why cross-domain thinking matters. The target resource may have the correct RBAC or data-plane permissions, yet the client still needs a valid network path and correct name resolution. If DNS returns a public endpoint when the scenario requires private access, the authorization model cannot repair the path.

A private IP is only one part of private connectivity. The client must also resolve the service name correctly, have a valid route, pass the relevant security controls, and reach a destination that authorizes the request. Following that full path is the most useful way to understand private endpoints and DNS troubleshooting.

This same pattern generalizes. Azure administration becomes easier when you ask which layer is responsible for the observed failure rather than changing several settings at once.

Governance changes how deployment should be designed

Infrastructure deployment is not independent of governance. ARM templates or Bicep can describe the desired resources, but policy may restrict what can be deployed, role assignments control who can deploy it, locks may prevent later changes, and tags may be required for organization or cost management.

That means an administrator needs to understand both declarative deployment and the environment into which the deployment lands. If a template fails, the problem may be syntax or dependency order, but it may also be a policy denial, missing permission, unavailable quota, or an incorrect region. Good troubleshooting starts by classifying the failure rather than immediately editing the template.

As you prepare, run deployments in an intentionally governed environment. The exercise is more useful than a clean-room template lab because it shows how control-plane rules affect compute, storage, and networking together.

Monitoring closes the loop on every other domain

Monitoring is not a separate activity performed after the “real” configuration work. It tells you whether identity, storage, compute, and networking are behaving as designed. Metrics can expose capacity or performance issues. Logs can reveal activity and resource behavior. Alerts turn conditions into operational signals. Network Watcher helps diagnose connectivity. Log Analytics supports queries across collected data.

A cross-domain administrator asks what evidence each resource should emit before an incident occurs. For a private application path, monitor the workload and understand how you would diagnose the network. For storage, know where access or platform evidence appears. For a VM or App Service application, know the difference between service health, application health, and platform metrics.

Operationally, Azure Monitor and Log Analytics observability starts with a question: what condition are you trying to prove, diagnose, or alert on? The answer determines whether you need a platform metric, diagnostic log, Log Analytics query, activity record, or another telemetry source.

Availability, backup, and recovery solve different failure classes

Azure administration also requires a clear failure model. Availability features reduce disruption from certain component failures. Backup creates recoverable copies or recovery points. Site Recovery supports replication and disaster-recovery workflows for supported workloads. Redundancy in storage protects data differently again.

These mechanisms can complement each other, but they should not be used as synonyms. A highly available workload may still need backup. A backup strategy may not meet a rapid failover requirement. Storage redundancy does not replace application recovery planning.

Azure Backup and Site Recovery illustrate why availability and recovery must be separated. Backups protect recoverable state; replication and failover address different outage models. For any workload, the useful question is which failure is being protected against and what recovery action the business expects.

Cross-domain incidents expose weak administration models

Once you can configure the individual domains, create incidents that force you to diagnose boundaries. The AZ-104 troubleshooting trail traces one connected application failure from identity and private DNS through routing, monitoring, and a verified fix. A workload cannot read from storage. Is the principal missing a role, is the storage firewall blocking the path, is the endpoint resolving incorrectly, or is the application using the wrong credential? A deployment is rejected. Is the resource definition invalid, is quota exhausted, is policy denying the configuration, or does the operator lack permission? A service is unreachable. Is the VM down, the route wrong, an NSG blocking traffic, DNS incorrect, or the application unhealthy?

For each incident, write the evidence you would inspect first. That prevents random troubleshooting. It also maps well to exam questions, where the correct answer frequently depends on identifying the layer that owns the symptom.

The best final preparation is not another broad survey of Azure. It is repeated practice moving through the operating chain: scope and identity, deployment, data, network path, evidence, and recovery.

One of the best ways to test this connected model is to follow a change through the environment. Suppose an application is moved behind a private endpoint. That network change can affect DNS resolution, monitoring reachability, access paths, and support procedures. If a managed identity is then introduced, the application may no longer need a stored credential, but RBAC becomes part of the dependency chain. If policy blocks a configuration that the deployment expects, the failure appears at the control plane before the workload ever starts. A strong administrator learns to ask what changed, which layer owns that change, and which dependent layers can now fail differently.

AZ-104’s five domains are useful for organizing the blueprint, but the job is integrated. Identities act on resources. Governance constrains deployment. Compute consumes storage. Networking controls reachability. Monitoring provides evidence. Backup and recovery prepare for failure. When you can explain those relationships, many exam scenarios stop looking like collections of Azure product names and start looking like ordinary operational problems.

Microsoft AZ-104 makes more sense when you stop treating Azure administration as five unrelated exam domains.
