AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty has always been an unusual certification because the ANS-C01 exam assumes that the candidate already understands networking at a professional level and can apply that knowledge inside complex AWS and hybrid environments. In 2026 there is an additional factor: AWS has announced that the certification is being retired, with December 31, 2026 as the last day to take the exam.<\/p>\n
That changes the decision for candidates. Someone who has already built the required networking depth and is close to exam readiness may still have a rational reason to complete ANS-C01 before retirement; AWS states that certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year validity period. Someone starting from basic networking knowledge in October 2026 should not treat the deadline as a reason to rush through years of architecture experience.<\/p>\n
The most useful way to approach ANS-C01 now is to separate the credential decision from the skill set. The exam is temporary. The networking problems it covers\u2014hybrid connectivity, routing, DNS, multi-account architecture, security, monitoring, and automation\u2014will remain central to serious cloud engineering.<\/p>\n
AWS describes the target candidate as someone with five or more years of networking experience and two or more years of cloud and hybrid networking experience. That target matters. The exam is not designed to teach subnetting, BGP, DNS, VPN fundamentals, or network troubleshooting from the beginning.<\/p>\n
Candidates should already be comfortable reasoning about route propagation, overlapping address spaces, private versus public connectivity, failure domains, traffic inspection, name resolution, encryption, and network observability. AWS-specific services then become implementations of familiar networking and distributed-system ideas.<\/p>\n
ANS-C01<\/a> therefore makes the most sense for candidates who can already approach problems as network architects<\/a>. If basic routing and troubleshooting still require heavy review, a vendor-neutral foundation such as CompTIA Network+<\/a> is a more sensible knowledge layer to strengthen first.<\/p>\n The ANS-C01 blueprint is organized into Network Design, Network Implementation, Network Management and Operation, and Network Security, Compliance, and Governance. AWS currently weights those domains at 30%, 26%, 20%, and 24% of scored content respectively.<\/p>\n Those percentages should not be interpreted as four isolated study silos. A hybrid connectivity design begins as a topology decision, becomes an implementation of routing and connectivity, must then be monitored and troubleshot, and finally needs security controls and governance. Strong candidates can follow the design through that entire lifecycle.<\/p>\n The exam is 170 minutes with 65 questions and costs US$300 according to AWS’s current certification page. That format gives time for complex scenarios, but the limiting factor is usually not reading speed. It is whether the candidate can reduce a complicated requirement to the few networking constraints that actually determine the answer.<\/p>\n ANS-C01 design questions reward candidates who start with requirements: bandwidth, latency, encryption, path predictability, number of VPC<\/a>s or accounts, on-premises connectivity, regional scope, and availability targets. Only then should a specific AWS service be selected.<\/p>\n For example, connecting a small number of networks is a different problem from building a transit architecture across many accounts and regions. Internet-based VPN can provide encrypted connectivity without the same provisioning model as dedicated private circuits. Direct Connect can provide private connectivity and more predictable network characteristics, but it does not remove the need for resilient design, routing policy<\/a>, or failover planning.<\/p>\n Architecture candidates who have worked through the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification<\/a> will recognize many of the building blocks, but ANS-C01 expects much deeper network reasoning. The question is not merely whether a VPC can connect to another environment; it is how routes, failure, scale, and security behave across the whole topology.<\/p>\n Hybrid DNS is difficult because names may need to resolve differently depending on where a query originates, and because corporate DNS, Route 53 private zones, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules, and application expectations can interact in non-obvious ways. Candidates should be able to trace a query from client to resolver to authoritative answer and explain what happens during a failure.<\/p>\n Routing deserves the same treatment. Memorizing that a route table contains destinations and targets is not enough. You should understand longest-prefix matching, propagated versus static routes, asymmetric routing, route preference, BGP path selection at a practical level, and what happens when the same prefixes are advertised through multiple connections.<\/p>\n Draw diagrams. For every path, identify the source, destination, route decision, translation if any, security control, and return path. This method turns complex scenario questions into a sequence of smaller decisions.<\/p>\n Enterprise AWS environments rarely consist of one VPC in one account. Organizations separate workloads by business unit, environment, security boundary, or regulatory scope. That creates questions about centralized egress, inspection, shared services, DNS, transit, IP address management, and routing between accounts and regions.<\/p>\n A good design avoids creating a mesh of ad hoc connections that becomes impossible to reason about. It also avoids centralizing every packet through a shared component simply because centralization sounds easier to govern. Network architecture has to balance isolation, operational consistency, fault containment, latency, throughput, and cost.<\/p>\n Multi-region design adds another layer. A route that works during normal operation may fail during regional recovery. Security appliances may be stateful. DNS failover can send users to a region whose back-end dependencies are not ready. ANS-C01 preparation should therefore include failure testing on paper and, where practical, in labs.<\/p>\n When a cloud network fails, engineers need enough evidence to determine whether the problem is DNS, routing, security policy, application behavior, packet loss, service quota, or an external dependency. ANS-C01 expects awareness of AWS-native logging and monitoring capabilities that help narrow that search.<\/p>\n Do not memorize tools independently. Associate each signal with a troubleshooting question. Flow records can help determine whether traffic was observed and how it was classified. Route and topology analysis can expose path problems. Metrics can reveal saturation or packet-processing constraints. Logs from VPN, load balancing, DNS, firewalls, and other services help confirm where behavior diverges from the design.<\/p>\n The goal is a troubleshooting method: define the expected path, gather evidence at boundaries, isolate the failing layer, and change one hypothesis at a time.<\/p>\n The security domain covers confidentiality, governance, monitoring, segmentation, and network protection. Candidates should understand the differences between stateful and stateless controls, the role of network firewalls and web protections, DDoS considerations, encryption for traffic in transit, and the relationship between network controls and identity.<\/p>\n Centralized inspection can simplify policy enforcement but introduces routing and availability considerations. TLS protects application traffic but requires certificate lifecycle management. VPN encryption protects paths but does not authorize the application using the path.
