MS-900, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, retired on March 31, 2026 and can no longer be scheduled. Microsoft has since introduced AB-900: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals<\/a>, the current beginner-level Microsoft 365 fundamentals direction for an AI-enabled workplace.<\/p>\n

The transition is important because AB-900 is not simply MS-900 with a new exam number. The retired MS-900<\/a> covered cloud concepts, Microsoft 365 applications and services, security\/compliance\/privacy\/trust, and Microsoft 365 pricing, licensing, and support. AB-900 focuses much more heavily on Microsoft 365 administration foundations, data protection and governance, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and agents.<\/p>\n

That means old MS-900 study material can still teach useful Microsoft 365 concepts, but candidates should not expect it to prepare them fully for AB-900. The current certification is AB-900 certification<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MS-900 is historical, not schedulable<\/h2>\n

Microsoft retired both the MS-900 exam and Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals certification path on March 31, 2026.<\/p>\n

People who already earned the fundamentals certification retain it on their Microsoft transcript according to Microsoft\u2019s retirement policy for fundamentals credentials. New candidates, however, cannot take MS-900 after retirement.<\/p>\n

Any current article that still tells readers to book MS-900 is therefore outdated.<\/p>\n

What MS-900 originally provided<\/h2>\n

MS-900 gave beginners a broad introduction to Microsoft 365. It explained the shift from on-premises software to cloud services, the role of Microsoft 365 applications, collaboration through Teams and SharePoint, identity, security and compliance, service health, licensing, and subscription concepts.<\/p>\n

That breadth made it useful for help-desk staff, sales professionals, students, business stakeholders, and people entering Microsoft cloud roles.<\/p>\n

The durable value is the mental model of Microsoft 365 as an integrated productivity platform rather than simply Word, Excel, and Outlook subscriptions.<\/p>\n

AB-900 has a different center of gravity<\/h2>\n

For learners coming from an older MS-900 course, this difference should change study time rather than force a complete restart. Microsoft 365 workload knowledge, identity basics, service health, security vocabulary, and licensing concepts remain useful orientation. The gap is concentrated around the newer administrative and AI-governance topics.<\/p>\n

That also makes hands-on exploration more valuable than it was for some MS-900 candidates. AB-900 expects beginners to recognize real Microsoft 365 objects, admin centers, Copilot controls, agents, and information-governance capabilities rather than discuss cloud productivity only at a high level.<\/p>\n

AB-900 is still beginner level, but Microsoft designed it around an AI-enabled Microsoft 365 environment.<\/p>\n

The current exam expects candidates to identify Microsoft 365 core services and objects, understand data protection and governance for Microsoft 365 and Copilot, and perform basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents.<\/p>\n

That is narrower in some traditional MS-900 areas and much deeper in Copilot, agents, data oversharing, governance, and AI administration.<\/p>\n

Microsoft 365 core objects still matter<\/h2>\n

AB-900 candidates should understand users, groups, teams, SharePoint sites, document libraries, folders, mailboxes, distribution groups, Teams policies, and licensing.<\/p>\n

These objects form the substrate that Copilot and agents operate over. AI does not replace the Microsoft 365 tenant model.<\/p>\n

A useful beginner should be able to explain which admin center owns which type of object and how identity and licensing affect access.<\/p>\n

Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams remain foundational workloads<\/h2>\n

Exchange Online provides mail and calendar services. SharePoint provides organizational sites and document management. Teams brings chat, meetings, channels, applications, and collaboration together while using other Microsoft 365 services underneath.<\/p>\n

AB-900 does not require deep specialist administration, but candidates should understand what each workload contributes.<\/p>\n

For deeper Teams administration, MS-700<\/a> is a role-based path rather than a fundamentals exam.<\/p>\n

Identity and access remain part of the fundamentals<\/h2>\n

Microsoft Entra ID still provides the identity foundation for Microsoft 365. Users, groups, authentication, single sign-on, roles, and Conditional Access affect how people reach services.<\/p>\n

AB-900 expects basic security familiarity even though it is not an identity-specialist exam.<\/p>\n

Understanding the difference between authentication and authorization is still one of the most useful concepts a beginner can carry into any Microsoft cloud role.<\/p>\n

Data protection matters because Copilot uses organizational information<\/h2>\n

Microsoft 365 Copilot can work across organizational content that the user is authorized to access. That makes data permissions and governance central to the new fundamentals path.<\/p>\n

If SharePoint sites are overshared or sensitive information lacks appropriate controls, AI can make that existing exposure easier to discover.<\/p>\n

AB-900 therefore covers Microsoft Purview, data access governance, oversharing, sensitive information, DLP alerts, activity, compliance, and data security posture for AI.<\/p>\n

Purview moves from an advanced topic to beginner relevance<\/h2>\n

Older fundamentals material might have treated compliance as a high-level product category. The new exam expects more concrete awareness of how Microsoft Purview helps identify, govern, and protect information.<\/p>\n

Candidates should recognize Compliance Manager, sensitive information, Data Explorer, Insider Risk Management, DLP, Communication Compliance, Activity Explorer, eDiscovery content search, and AI data-security posture concepts.<\/p>\n

The information-classification<\/a> mindset helps connect those tools to a simple question: what information is this, and how should it be handled?<\/p>\n

Oversharing is now a fundamentals-level administration concern<\/h2>\n

AB-900 explicitly expects candidates to understand tools that identify excessive access in SharePoint.<\/p>\n

This is important because Microsoft 365 security is often about legitimate access being broader than intended rather than an attacker bypassing every control.<\/p>\n

Data-access governance reports and restricted-access capabilities help administrators identify and reduce exposure before AI experiences amplify it.<\/p>\n

Copilot administration is now part of the beginner path<\/h2>\n

Candidates should understand Microsoft 365 Copilot capabilities, licensing models, pay-as-you-go concepts where applicable, feature controls, usage, adoption, and basic administrative settings.<\/p>\n

The exam also includes prompt-management concepts such as saving, sharing, scheduling, and deleting prompts.<\/p>\n

This makes AB-900 more operational than MS-900 in areas related to AI-enabled productivity.<\/p>\n

Agents are a new fundamentals topic<\/h2>\n

Microsoft 365 agents can provide specialized knowledge or actions beyond the general Copilot experience.<\/p>\n

AB-900 expects candidates to understand built-in Copilot capabilities versus agents, identify custom-agent scenarios, configure access, create a basic agent, understand approval, and monitor agent use and lifecycle.<\/p>\n

The AI agent fundamentals<\/a> are useful because agents should be understood as systems with instructions, knowledge, tools, and boundaries\u2014not simply chatbots with a different label.<\/p>\n

What old MS-900 knowledge still transfers<\/h2>\n

Keep the general Microsoft 365 workload map, cloud-service concepts, identity basics, Teams\/SharePoint\/Exchange understanding, security and compliance vocabulary, service-health awareness, and licensing fundamentals.<\/p>\n

Those concepts still help because AB-900 assumes familiarity with Microsoft 365 before adding Copilot and agents.<\/p>\n

However, do not spend most of your current preparation on old MS-900 material about broad cloud models or pricing structures if those topics are not emphasized in the active AB-900 blueprint.<\/p>\n

What needs to be learned from scratch for AB-900<\/h2>\n

Add Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, AI administration, data oversharing, SharePoint data-access governance, Purview DSPM for AI, Copilot usage and adoption, agent access and approval, and AI-specific governance.<\/p>\n

The current exam also expects familiarity with the Microsoft 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Entra, and Purview admin centers.<\/p>\n

That makes hands-on navigation more useful than treating the certification as a purely conceptual business exam.<\/p>\n

A practical AB-900 study project<\/h2>\n

Use a Microsoft 365 test environment if available. Identify users and groups, inspect licensing, review a SharePoint site and library, create or inspect a team, and identify which admin center controls each object.<\/p>\n

Then review Purview information-protection and governance experiences, look for oversharing or access information, and inspect the controls relevant to Copilot data readiness.<\/p>\n

Finally, explore Copilot and agent administration. Identify which capabilities can be controlled, how licenses or billing affect availability, how an agent is created and approved, and where usage or lifecycle information is monitored.<\/p>\n

AB-900 is current, but another update is already scheduled<\/h2>\n

AB-900 remains active as of October 23, 2026. Microsoft’s English-language skills update took effect on October 14, so the revised guide is now the appropriate reference.<\/p>\n

Candidates should prepare against the October 14 guide now in force and check Microsoft Learn for any later changes before their exam.<\/p>\n

This is another reason to use current Microsoft objectives rather than relying on an older course that labels itself simply \u201cMicrosoft 365 Fundamentals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Choose the current credential based on what you want to learn<\/h2>\n

MS-900 gave broad Microsoft 365 literacy. AB-900 gives a newer fundamentals path focused much more directly on administering, protecting, and governing an AI-enabled Microsoft 365 environment.<\/p>\n

If your goal is deeper tenant administration, Microsoft\u2019s late-2026 path is moving toward AB-650. If your goal is Teams administration, MS-700 remains active. Security and information-protection roles have their own SC exams.<\/p>\n

The broader Microsoft certification<\/a> catalog should therefore be used to choose a role rather than assuming every learner must follow one fixed sequence.<\/p>\n

The transition reflects how Microsoft 365 itself has changed<\/h2>\n

MS-900 retired because the entry-level skills Microsoft wants to emphasize have shifted. Microsoft 365 is still a productivity platform, but Copilot and agents are becoming part of how that platform is administered and governed.<\/p>\n

The old foundations remain valuable, especially identity, collaboration, services, security, and compliance. The new fundamentals layer adds AI data readiness, Copilot administration, agent governance, and more concrete Microsoft 365 administration concepts.<\/p>\n

If you studied MS-900, reuse the durable knowledge. If you are starting now, prepare directly for AB-900 rather than trying to earn a credential that retired in March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
