Microsoft AZ-802, Administering Windows Server, is the new consolidated exam for Microsoft’s Windows Server administrator certification path. Microsoft lists AZ-800 and AZ-801 during the transition, with both scheduled to retire on September 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM Central Standard Time. Once they are removed, AZ-802 remains as the available exam route for the Windows Server Administrator Associate credential.
The change is more than a new exam number. The older path separated core administration in AZ-800 from advanced security, availability, migration, and recovery in AZ-801. AZ-802 brings the practical administrator role into one blueprint: AD DS, hybrid server management, virtual machines, networking, storage and file services, security, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
That consolidated scope rewards candidates who can connect systems rather than study domains in isolation. An authentication problem may be DNS. A file-service outage may be storage, identity, or network related. A hybrid-management failure may be permissions, agent connectivity, or Azure policy. The exam is best approached as a set of operating scenarios rather than a catalog of Windows features.
Microsoft gives substantial weight to deploying and managing Active Directory Domain Services. Candidates should be comfortable with forests, domains, domain controllers, sites, replication, organizational units, Group Policy, users, groups, service accounts, trusts, and DNS dependencies. The practical question is not only how to create these objects but how to keep authentication reliable across physical sites and hybrid boundaries.
The Windows Server hybrid administration foundation is useful for constructing a lab with two sites and at least two domain controllers. Change site topology, create a replication delay, misconfigure DNS on one client, and inspect the symptoms. The same login complaint can result from several different infrastructure faults, and strong administrators know how to separate them.
Windows Admin Center, PowerShell, Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Azure Update Manager, and Defender for Cloud allow administrators to manage servers across on-premises, Azure, and other environments. Candidates should understand onboarding, permissions, extensions, connectivity, update orchestration, inventory, and where cloud-based management stops when a server loses access to Azure services.
Onboard a non-Azure Windows Server to Azure Arc and compare it with an Azure VM. Apply an update schedule, collect monitoring data, and review governance settings. Then interrupt the server’s outbound connectivity. Record which cloud control-plane functions fail and which local functions remain. This makes “hybrid management” concrete rather than treating Arc as a label.
AZ-802 expects familiarity with Hyper-V virtual machines and Azure virtual machines, including configuration, networking, storage, lifecycle operations, and troubleshooting. Administrators should understand what is controlled by the host, what belongs to the guest operating system, and what changes when the same Windows workload runs in Azure.
The older Windows Server virtualization and hybrid networking scenarios remain useful because the underlying operational skills carry forward. Build equivalent VMs in Hyper-V and Azure and compare disk attachment, network configuration, remote administration, backup options, monitoring, and failure recovery. The comparison exposes which responsibilities are platform-specific and which remain Windows responsibilities.
Windows Server administrators still need solid DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, routing, remote access, and firewall knowledge. Hybrid environments add cloud networks and management paths, but the diagnostic sequence remains grounded in fundamentals. A server that cannot reach a service may have the wrong name resolution, no route, a blocked port, or an unhealthy destination.
The DNS, DHCP, and NAT model provides a clean troubleshooting framework. Resolve the name, confirm the address, test the route, test the port, then validate the application. Avoid changing multiple layers at once. A repeatable sequence is especially important in hybrid systems where a cloud control plane can distract from a simple local DNS mistake.
File shares, NTFS permissions, SMB, Storage Spaces, data deduplication, quotas, and related storage features remain core administrative responsibilities. Candidates should distinguish a storage pool from a backup, availability from recovery, and share permissions from file-system permissions. A design that remains online after one disk failure can still lose data through accidental deletion or corruption.
Build a file server with departmental shares, group-based access, quotas, and a defined backup. Test effective permissions for a user who belongs to several groups. Then restore a deleted file and simulate loss of a storage component. This separates authorization, availability, and recoverability into distinct controls and makes troubleshooting more predictable.
AZ-802 includes Windows Server infrastructure security rather than placing advanced protection in a separate exam. Candidates should know security baselines, Microsoft Defender, firewall configuration, privileged access, credential protection, patching, service exposure, auditing, and cloud-assisted security tools. A domain controller, file server, and application server should not be hardened with an identical blind checklist.
Define allowed administrative paths before applying controls. Decide which accounts may administer each server, from which systems, through which protocols, and how the action is logged. Then reduce unnecessary services and privileges. The approach is more defensible than enabling every possible hardening setting and discovering later that a required workload no longer functions.
Because AZ-802 spans many domains, PowerShell is the connective skill that lets administrators collect state and apply consistent change. The PowerShell administration foundation should lead into remoting, object filtering, reusable functions, error handling, and structured output.
Write a health-collection script that queries domain status, disk capacity, service state, recent critical events, IP configuration, and update information from multiple servers. Save results in a format that can be compared across time. The exercise is valuable because monitoring and troubleshooting often begin with the same question: what changed, and on which systems?
Azure Monitor, event logs, performance counters, Defender signals, and platform health data can help diagnose problems, but only when administrators know what evidence each system provides. A CPU alert cannot explain a failed domain replication link, and an authentication event may not explain why a client never reached the domain controller.
Create failure signatures for five incidents: DNS misconfiguration, storage exhaustion, authentication failure, update failure, and network filtering. For each, list the first two sources of evidence you would inspect. Then reproduce at least two faults in a lab. This builds diagnostic muscle and prevents troubleshooting from degenerating into random configuration changes.
Candidates who already prepared for AZ-800 or AZ-801 have not wasted that effort. The legacy exams mapped the same operating environment into separate core and advanced domains. The advanced Windows Server resilience and migration material and the older core material remain useful for understanding why security, recovery, and monitoring depend on identity, networking, compute, and storage.
For a current AZ-802 capstone, build a small domain with two servers, manage one through Azure Arc, create a Hyper-V or Azure VM, configure a file service, apply role-appropriate security, collect monitoring, and introduce two failures. Document how you prove the root cause rather than simply how you fix it. That end-to-end administrative reasoning is the best bridge from the retiring two-exam path to the consolidated certification model.
Group Policy and configuration consistency still matter in the consolidated blueprint even though the exam is framed around modern administration. Use a security baseline as a starting point, then document the exceptions needed for a particular server role. Test the policy in a limited OU before broader deployment. This mirrors production change control: central management is valuable because it can scale a correct setting, but the same reach can scale a mistake just as quickly.
Update management is another cross-domain workflow. A server may be visible in Azure Arc and assigned to an update schedule, but a successful patch cycle also depends on maintenance windows, application dependencies, restart behavior, free disk space, and post-update health. Build a pre-check and post-check process. If a server reports successful installation but the application service remains stopped, the update platform has done its job while the operational process has not.
Storage troubleshooting should include performance as well as capacity. Collect disk latency, throughput, queue length, and free-space evidence while running a file or application workload. Then introduce a constrained disk and compare the symptom with a network slowdown. Users may report both as “the server is slow,” yet the remediation paths are completely different. AZ-802 rewards administrators who can use evidence to narrow the layer before making changes.
The consolidated exam also makes prioritization important. You cannot become equally deep in every Windows feature by memorization. Build confidence around the systems Microsoft names directly—AD DS, Windows Admin Center, Hyper-V, PowerShell, Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Update Manager, Defender for Cloud, networking, and storage—then practice the failure relationships between them. That creates a coherent administrator skill set instead of ten disconnected topic lists.
Use the last stage of preparation to build a one-page operating map instead of another feature list. Draw identity, DNS, network, compute, storage, hybrid management, security, updates, and monitoring around a small Windows Server environment. Add the administrative tools used at each layer and one common failure signal. The map should let you trace a user complaint from symptom to likely evidence. That is the practical advantage of the consolidated exam: the blueprint encourages you to see Windows Server as an interconnected service environment rather than separate chapters.
Because AZ-802 is new, avoid overfitting preparation to remembered questions from AZ-800 or AZ-801. Use the published skill areas as the control document, then reuse older labs only where they build those current skills. The transition rewards transferable administration knowledge, not nostalgia for the previous exam split.
