Microsoft DP-750: Azure Databricks Data Engineering in Practice

Microsoft DP-750 is the current exam for Microsoft Certified: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate. The active September 2026 blueprint, dated March 11, covers setting up and configuring Azure Databricks, securing and governing Unity Catalog objects, preparing and processing data, and deploying and maintaining pipelines and workloads. Microsoft has published an English-language update for October 19, so candidates should confirm the effective outline before scheduling.

This exam expects more than Spark syntax. The role combines workspace and compute choices, Unity Catalog governance, SQL and Python transformation, pipeline design, software-development practices, troubleshooting, and workload operations. The Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate credential therefore rewards engineers who can run a governed platform as well as transform data.

A useful preparation environment contains at least two catalogs, multiple schemas, an external location, a small batch source, a streaming source, a job, and source-controlled code. Put permissions around it, create a quality failure, force a job retry, and inspect Spark behavior. That single environment can expose most weak areas far better than isolated notebook exercises.

Compute selection affects performance, isolation, and operating cost

Serverless, job compute, SQL warehouses, classic clusters, shared compute, autoscaling, pools, runtime versions, and Photon acceleration each change the operational profile of a workload. The right choice depends on execution pattern, latency, libraries, concurrency, security, and how much cluster administration the team wants to own.

Run the same transformation on two compute configurations and compare startup time, execution time, and cost. Then increase data volume until the original setting becomes inefficient. The goal is to understand why compute fits a workload, not to memorize a default node type.

Unity Catalog is the center of the governance model

Catalogs, schemas, tables, views, volumes, external locations, storage credentials, privileges, row filters, column masks, and lineage create the governance surface. Naming and hierarchy matter because they influence isolation and delegation. The Databricks certification landscape is broad, but DP-750 specifically expects data engineers to use governance as part of ordinary pipeline design.

Create development and production catalogs and grant a service principal only the access required to run a job. Add a restricted column and a row-level rule, then test with two personas. If a pipeline requires broad ownership privileges merely to function, the design deserves revision.

Ingestion patterns should distinguish files, tables, and continuously arriving data

COPY INTO, Auto Loader, streaming reads, JDBC-style sources, and batch extraction solve different ingestion problems. Engineers need to handle schema inference, schema evolution, checkpoints, rescued data, idempotency, and incremental arrival. A first successful load is only the beginning of a production ingestion design.

Drop new files into a source over time, then add an unexpected column and one malformed record. Decide whether the pipeline should fail, evolve, or quarantine data. The response should be explicit and observable instead of silently accepting a shape that downstream consumers did not expect.

Spark transformations should be written with execution behavior in mind

PySpark and Spark SQL make distributed transformation accessible, but code that looks simple can still create expensive shuffles, skew, repeated scans, or oversized partitions. The Apache Spark processing model is useful because it connects transformations to stages, partitions, and execution plans.

Build a join where one key is heavily skewed. Inspect the Spark UI, then change the strategy or data layout and compare stage duration. Repeat with an unnecessary shuffle. Performance work becomes much less mysterious when the physical execution is visible.

Delta tables support dependable change when engineers use their semantics deliberately

ACID transactions, MERGE, schema enforcement, time travel, optimization, partitioning, clustering, and maintenance features help make lake data reliable. Engineers should understand when an upsert is appropriate, how late data is reconciled, and how table layout affects reads and writes.

Implement an incremental customer feed with updates and deletes. Reprocess one batch to prove the pipeline is idempotent. Then query an earlier table version and explain how that capability supports investigation or rollback. The important concept is controlled state transition, not merely a list of Delta commands.

Pipeline orchestration includes dependencies, parameters, and recovery

Jobs and Lakeflow-style pipelines coordinate tasks, schedules, parameters, branching, retries, notifications, and dependencies. A well-designed job makes failure scope visible and avoids repeating expensive work unnecessarily. The same principles appear in data orchestration across platforms.

Create a multi-task workflow with ingestion, validation, transformation, and publication. Force the validation step to fail. Decide which tasks can be safely retried and which need cleanup. Then backfill a historical date without changing production configuration by hand.

Data quality should be encoded, not left to downstream complaints

Expectations, constraints, quarantine patterns, profiling, freshness checks, and reconciliation counts make quality visible. A technically successful pipeline can still publish duplicates or incomplete data. Data engineers should decide which violations stop processing and which can be isolated for later correction.

Introduce duplicate business keys and an invalid timestamp. Produce a quality report alongside the curated output and alert on a threshold. The exercise is valuable because it links data trust to operational behavior rather than to a manual spot check.

Deployment and CI/CD reduce notebook-only operational risk

Source control, Databricks Asset Bundles or equivalent declarative deployment, environment variables, secrets, tests, and release workflows help move code between environments consistently. The CI/CD lifecycle matters because a data pipeline is software and deserves the same traceability as an application.

Store notebooks and configuration in Git, promote a change through a nonproduction environment, and make deployment reproducible. If a release requires clicking through many workspace settings, capture those settings as code or document why they cannot be automated.

Troubleshooting should move from symptom to Spark, data, or platform evidence

Slow jobs, failed tasks, out-of-memory conditions, permission errors, data skew, unavailable source systems, and bad schemas produce very different evidence. Use job run details, event logs, Spark UI, metrics, query plans, and data-quality output to narrow the problem before changing configuration.

Finish with a scenario where a previously stable pipeline suddenly takes three times longer. Compare input volume, plan shape, partition count, skew, compute configuration, and external dependencies. The data engineering lab approach works because each troubleshooting decision can be validated against something observable.

Unity Catalog external data should be tested as an ownership boundary, not just configured once. Create a managed table and an external table, then remove the external storage permission while leaving catalog privileges intact. Observe the failure and explain which control plane grants object access and which credential reaches the underlying data. This distinction matters when troubleshooting because a user can appear to have the correct catalog privilege while storage access still fails underneath.

Lakehouse file layout deserves hands-on measurement. Write many tiny files and compare a read with the same data compacted into more appropriate file sizes. Inspect task count and scan behavior. Then experiment with clustering or another layout optimization for a selective query. The point is not to memorize one “ideal” file size; it is to recognize when metadata overhead, partitioning, or data skipping becomes part of the performance problem.

Streaming should be practiced beyond a happy-path notebook. Feed a stream with late records, duplicate identifiers, and a temporary source interruption. Confirm checkpoint recovery and decide how deduplication or watermarking should behave. If the business needs exact reconciliation, compare the streamed result with a trusted batch total. A streaming pipeline is operationally credible when it can explain what happened during interruption rather than merely resume without obvious errors.

Deployment also needs environment separation. Use parameterized configuration so catalog names, external locations, service principals, and endpoints differ by environment without editing source code. Promote the same tested artifact through development and production. This is where the Databricks data-engineering objectives can help identify gaps, but the lab should remain tied to Microsoft’s DP-750 role and Azure integrations.

Operational monitoring should combine job health with Spark and data signals. A job marked successful can still be slower than normal, process unusually few records, or produce a large quarantine set. Track duration, input volume, shuffle behavior, failed tasks, retries, and quality metrics together. When a regression appears, compare the current run with a known-good baseline before changing cluster size. Scaling first can conceal the cause and make the next recurrence harder to diagnose.

Finish with a recovery drill. Delete or corrupt a small target in the lab, identify the last valid state, rebuild it from trustworthy source data or table history, and validate the result before allowing downstream use. Then document which permissions and pipeline steps were required. Data engineering is ultimately about repeatable state management. If you can deploy, observe, repair, and explain a Databricks pipeline under failure, you are much closer to the work DP-750 represents.

Authentication deserves a deliberate comparison as well. Test a user identity, service principal, and managed identity where the platform supports them, and document which is appropriate for interactive work, automation, and access to Azure resources. Avoid copying long-lived secrets into notebooks simply because it makes the first connection easy. Identity choice affects rotation, auditability, and the blast radius of credential exposure, so it belongs in architecture rather than post-deployment cleanup.

Finally, compare DP-750 with DP-700 without treating one as a replacement for the other. DP-750 is centered on Azure Databricks engineering, Unity Catalog, Spark workloads, and Databricks operations; DP-700 is centered on Microsoft Fabric data engineering. Both value reliable pipelines, quality, governance, and monitoring, but the platform primitives and operational decisions differ. Knowing which environment a scenario belongs to prevents generic data-engineering knowledge from obscuring platform-specific judgment.

A final check is documentation. Record the data contract, catalog ownership, expected schema, recovery steps, and deployment source for the pipeline you built. When an engineer can reconstruct why a job exists and how its data is governed, operational knowledge is no longer trapped in the notebook author’s memory.
