Microsoft AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure

Microsoft AI-200, Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure, is the current exam for Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate. Microsoft introduced the credential in 2026 as the replacement for the retired Azure Developer Associate certification. The role retains durable Azure development skills but reframes them around AI back-end services, scalable cloud architectures, vector-enabled data stores, containerized applications, messaging, security, and observability. Candidates should not mistake the exam for a model-training or prompt-engineering credential; it is fundamentally a cloud-development exam for AI-enabled systems.

The current blueprint is divided across containerized solutions, Azure data-management services for AI, connecting to and consuming Azure services, and securing, monitoring, and troubleshooting solutions. Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with vector workloads, Azure Managed Redis, Azure Container Registry, App Service, Container Apps, AKS, Service Bus, Event Grid, Functions, Key Vault, App Configuration, OpenTelemetry, and KQL all appear in the role. The emphasis is on building the dependable platform around AI applications.

Candidates coming from AZ-204 should use the AZ-204 to AI-200 transition material rather than assuming their old preparation is sufficient. The historical Azure Developer Associate credential still explains the lineage, but Microsoft’s current path is AI-200. Durable cloud-development concepts transfer; the new exam expects deeper familiarity with vector data patterns, AI back ends, modern container platforms, and observability for distributed systems.

Container image discipline is the starting point for reproducible AI back ends

AI-200 expects developers to build, store, version, and manage container images through Azure Container Registry and to understand how hosted services consume those images. AI workloads often include SDK dependencies, native libraries, model-related tooling, or worker processes that benefit from consistent packaging. A reproducible image reduces the gap between local development and production and provides a stable release artifact for multiple hosting targets.

Create a small Python API that calls an AI-related back-end service, containerize it, push versioned images to a registry, and deploy two revisions. Change one dependency and confirm that the image tag and deployment history make the change traceable. Then test how secrets and environment-specific settings are supplied without baking them into the image. This exercise connects build discipline to deployment safety.

App Service, Container Apps, and AKS represent different operating trade-offs

An application can often run on more than one Azure hosting platform. App Service provides managed web hosting with familiar deployment patterns; Container Apps adds container-native revisions and event-driven scaling without requiring cluster management; AKS offers deeper Kubernetes control at the cost of more operational responsibility. AI-200 scenarios may ask which platform best fits scale, networking, orchestration, event, or management requirements.

Use the Azure compute transition material to compare the three platforms for a web API, a queue-driven worker, and a complex multi-service application with custom Kubernetes needs. Write down why the simplest platform that satisfies the requirement is often preferable. Architecture questions become easier when you evaluate control versus operational burden.

KEDA and event-driven scaling connect workload volume to compute consumption

AI workloads can be bursty: document ingestion, embedding generation, background enrichment, or agent tool execution may arrive through queues and events. Container Apps can use KEDA-based scaling to respond to event sources, allowing worker capacity to rise and fall with demand. Developers need to understand what signal drives scaling and how concurrency, retries, and downstream limits affect the system.

Build a queue-driven worker that processes messages and observe scaling behavior under a burst. Then throttle the downstream dependency and see whether adding more workers improves or worsens the system. This demonstrates an important cloud principle: autoscaling one layer cannot overcome a fixed bottleneck in another layer and may increase failures if back-pressure is ignored.

Vector-aware data stores turn retrieval into an application data problem

AI-200 gives substantial weight to Azure data services because retrieval and memory are central to AI back ends. Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL can store application data and embeddings, while Azure Database for PostgreSQL can support vector search with relational context and pgvector patterns. The choice depends on data model, query patterns, consistency, latency, scale, operational preferences, and how vector search relates to transactional data.

Review embeddings and vector retrieval, then implement the same semantic search concept in two data models: document-oriented records and relational records. Add metadata filters and measure how indexing choices affect latency. The goal is not to memorize vector syntax but to understand that semantic retrieval still depends on sound data modeling and query design.

Cosmos DB design must balance consistency, indexing, throughput, and change processing

Cosmos DB scenarios can combine SDK access, query design, Request Unit consumption, indexing policies, consistency levels, vector similarity search, and change feed processing. A developer should recognize when an expensive query is caused by data shape or indexing rather than by insufficient compute. Change feed can also support downstream AI workflows by reacting to newly created or updated content.

Create a small container of records with text, metadata, and embeddings. Compare a broad cross-partition query with a partition-aware query, then inspect the effect of indexing. Add a change-feed processor that queues new content for enrichment. This connects database efficiency to an AI ingestion pipeline rather than studying Cosmos DB as an isolated service.

PostgreSQL and managed Redis solve different performance and state problems

Azure Database for PostgreSQL provides relational modeling, SQL, and vector capabilities suitable for applications that need structured relationships and semantic retrieval. Azure Managed Redis can support caching, expiration, fast key-value access, and vector indexing for low-latency patterns. The two services can complement each other: PostgreSQL may remain the system of record while Redis accelerates repeated reads or supports fast retrieval layers.

Design a back end that stores durable records in PostgreSQL and caches expensive lookup results in Redis. Define cache keys, time-to-live, invalidation, and what happens when cached data is stale. Then decide whether vector search belongs in the primary database, cache layer, or a separate retrieval service. The answer should follow consistency, latency, and operational requirements.

Service Bus, Event Grid, and Functions separate work and improve resilience

AI systems often have asynchronous tasks that should not block a user request: document processing, batch enrichment, notification, embedding generation, or downstream integration. Service Bus provides durable messaging with queues, topics, subscriptions, and dead-letter handling; Event Grid supports event-driven workflows; Azure Functions can respond to triggers without requiring a continuously running server. Developers should understand delivery behavior and failure recovery.

Model an ingestion pipeline where a file upload emits an event, a function validates metadata, and a queue dispatches expensive processing. Define retries, poison-message handling, idempotency, and the point where the user can see status. Then simulate duplicate delivery and a downstream outage. Reliable cloud systems assume messages and events can be repeated or delayed.

Secrets and application configuration should be externalized from code and images

AI-200 explicitly covers Key Vault and App Configuration because cloud applications depend on credentials, endpoints, feature flags, and environment-specific settings. Secrets should not be committed to source control or embedded in container images. Managed identities and appropriate access policies reduce the need to distribute credentials. Configuration should support safe differences across development, test, and production.

Move an API key from a local configuration file into Key Vault and access it through an application identity. Store a non-secret feature setting in App Configuration. Rotate the secret and confirm that the deployment process does not require rebuilding the container. This exercise shows the operational advantage of separating code, secrets, and configuration.

OpenTelemetry and KQL make distributed failures explainable

AI cloud solutions span containers, APIs, databases, queues, functions, and external AI services. A failure may appear as latency or a bad user response even when each individual resource looks healthy. The observability model is therefore central to AI-200. OpenTelemetry traces can follow requests across services, while KQL can query logs and metrics for patterns that are not obvious from dashboards.

Instrument a request that passes through an API, queue, worker, and database. Add a correlation identifier and trace the flow end to end. Then introduce a slow database query and a failed external call. Write KQL that isolates the affected requests and compare latency across spans. Troubleshooting becomes systematic when telemetry preserves the relationship between distributed components.

The capstone should feel like a cloud platform for AI, not a single API call. Review legacy AZ-204 skills that still matter for AI-200 to identify where old Azure developer skills transfer and where new work is needed. A useful capstone includes a containerized API, event-driven worker, vector-capable data store, secure secrets, configuration, messaging, and full tracing. Add an AI service only where the business requirement needs it; the exam is about the platform engineering that keeps the AI-enabled application reliable.

Run the capstone through deployment, scale, data growth, duplicate messages, secret rotation, dependency failure, and a rollback. If you can explain which Azure service owns each responsibility and use telemetry to diagnose failures, you are practicing the role Microsoft now calls Azure AI Cloud Developer. That is the core shift from the retired AZ-204 lineage to AI-200.

API design remains an important bridge between the application and its AI-oriented back end. A service should expose clear contracts, validate input before expensive processing, return useful error states, and avoid coupling callers to internal implementation details. API Management or other gateway patterns may be appropriate when authentication, throttling, versioning, or policy enforcement must be centralized. Even when the exam objective is a particular Azure service, keep asking how that service participates in a reliable developer-facing contract.

Capacity planning should also consider the cost profile of data and compute together. Vector indexes consume storage and memory, large containers take time to pull, chatty services create network overhead, and aggressive scaling can amplify database or downstream-service consumption. Establish a realistic load test that includes the same message sizes, embedding dimensions, concurrency, and retry behavior expected in production. AI-200 is easier to reason about when performance, reliability, and cost are treated as connected engineering constraints rather than separate optimization exercises.
