What Are the Costs Involved in Becoming CCIE Certified?

The cost of becoming a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) starts with two mandatory examinations, but the full investment can include practice labs, travel, study resources and additional attempts. Estimating those items separately is more useful than quoting an unsupported universal price.

As of October 24, 2026, Cisco lists a typical CCNP-level qualifying core exam at US$400 per attempt, a practical expert lab at a Cisco testing facility or mobile BYOD location at US$1,600, and a mobile Cisco Kit exam at US$1,900. These fees exclude applicable taxes, payment charges and travel.

The qualifying core exam

CCIE candidates pass a qualifying technology core rather than one universal old-style CCIE written examination. Enterprise Infrastructure uses 350-401 ENCOR, Security uses 350-701 SCOR, and Data Center uses 350-601 DCCOR. Other tracks have their own qualifying exams. Verify the current code for your selected specialization before paying.

Cisco lists applicable core exams at US$400 per attempt. A qualifying pass is valid for three years to complete the certification requirements. Renewal of an existing certification through Continuing Education does not extend that specific exam-qualification period. Avoid taking the core much earlier than your realistic lab-readiness date.

The eight-hour practical lab

At a Cisco testing facility, or a mobile lab using your own supported device, the expert practical currently costs US$1,600 per attempt. With the Cisco Kit mobile option the published fee is US$1,900. Delivery choice and available locations matter: an apparently cheaper appointment may involve more travel or equipment expense.

The practical fee does not cover hotels, flights, local transport or visa arrangements. Cisco requires official expert-level registration and full payment before scheduling. Read the current identification, rescheduling, cancellation and retake rules before committing to travel bookings.

Calculate an exam-only baseline

One qualifying core attempt at US$400 plus one US$1,600 facility/BYOD lab attempt produces an exam-only total of US$2,000 before taxes or incidentals. Replacing that practical with the US$1,900 Cisco Kit mobile option raises the comparable fee-only baseline to US$2,300.

A repeat US$1,600 lab attempt increases the first illustrative exam-fee total to US$3,600. This is a scenario calculation, not a claim about how often candidates fail. Retakes are charged individually, and candidates should only book a new attempt after addressing documented weaknesses.

Official preparation products

Cisco offers training paths, videos, practical labs and other study resources, while independent books and courses may help too. None of these products creates automatic exam eligibility. Choose resources by their match with the current practical blueprint and the quality of feedback they provide.

Cisco currently advertises expert practice lab sessions at US$50 each plus taxes. Session length and availability vary by track, and these are self-directed preparation sessions rather than graded certification attempts. Decide what to troubleshoot before buying more hours.

Hardware and lawful simulation

Network equipment can be expensive, especially if the candidate tries to reproduce an entire enterprise lab physically. Virtualization and properly licensed software images can provide useful repeatable exercises with less hardware expenditure. Test whether a simulation has the features required by the current blueprint.

The fact that an image or appliance file can be downloaded does not establish permission to run, share or redistribute it. Use Cisco-authorized or otherwise properly licensed lab environments, and do not base exam preparation on purported live exam question leaks.

Travel, leave and employer support

Candidates living far from a practical lab location may need accommodation, a visa, flights, local transfers and time away from paid work. These costs vary enormously. Get actual quotes and confirm the booked lab city, supported delivery format and check-in rules rather than using another candidate’s expenses as an average.

Ask an employer whether reimbursement covers the core exam, the practical assessment, lab practice, training courses, repeat attempts and travel. Written approval is preferable to relying on an informal promise of sponsorship after the money has been spent.

Certification scope and official policy

Cisco changes exam versions and policies over time. Confirm that your selected track is active and that the core pass can qualify you for its current practical. Cisco’s formal three-year qualification rule and current lab scheduling terms take priority over outdated blogs and training advertisements.

Core, lab, retake and practice fees belong in separate budget rows with individual payment dates. Keep an allowance for taxes and currency conversion where applicable, and distinguish expenses already committed from those you may never need to incur.

What makes the spending worthwhile?

CCIE is most relevant when advanced network design, automation and troubleshooting align with your present or intended responsibilities. A badge can support credibility but does not guarantee a new position, legal work authorization, a salary increase or an employer-sponsored project.

Start with the verified fees, then estimate optional and conditional expenses transparently. That produces a budget you can defend and adjust, rather than an inflated or unrealistically low single price.
