Microsoft AZ-120: SAP on Azure Study Guide
Microsoft AZ-120 remains the specialist exam for professionals who plan and administer Microsoft Azure for SAP workloads. It is not a general Azure administration test and it is not a general SAP functional exam. The difficult part is the intersection: translating SAP availability, performance, network, security, and operations requirements into an Azure design that can be deployed and supported safely.
Identify the SAP landscape, database platform, size, latency sensitivity, availability targets, recovery objectives, maintenance constraints, and integration dependencies. Then map those requirements to Azure compute, storage, network, identity, and resilience choices. Architecture should follow the workload, not the other way around.
High availability is not one checkbox. Understand the failure domains that matter to the application: virtual machines, zones, regions, database replication, shared services, network dependencies, and application-tier components. Know which component owns failover and how health is detected.
ExamSnap’s guide to resilient SAP solutions on Microsoft Azure is useful for connecting high availability, disaster recovery, and day-two operations.
Trace traffic among SAP application servers, databases, management systems, user networks, on-premises environments, and other Azure services. Review ExpressRoute, VPN, virtual networks, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancing, and network security. A design that is theoretically reachable can still fail SAP performance requirements if latency or path behavior is wrong.
SAP databases can place demanding IOPS, throughput, and latency requirements on storage. Know how Azure disk and storage options affect the design and how caching, striping, redundancy, and database-specific guidance change the answer. Avoid memorizing a single “best” storage type. Match the storage to the workload profile and supported SAP architecture.
Assess the source environment, dependencies, data size, downtime tolerance, tooling, network capacity, and rollback plan. A migration method that minimizes downtime may introduce complexity elsewhere. Practice explaining why a chosen method fits the business window and how you would validate the system before users return.
Use least privilege for administrators and service identities. Understand Azure role-based access control, privileged administration, secrets and certificates, network segmentation, logging, backup security, and policy. SAP landscapes are business-critical systems; operational access should be traceable and tightly bounded.
Review monitoring, backup, recovery testing, patching, capacity, performance baselines, automation, and change control. Practice distinguishing a database problem from a VM, storage, network, or Azure platform issue. The right monitoring design should help operators isolate that boundary quickly.
For broader Microsoft exam context, the Microsoft certification roadmap can help place AZ-120 beside related Azure roles.
Design one SAP landscape on paper and defend it. Include production and nonproduction tiers, connectivity to on-premises systems, identity, database HA, regional recovery, backup, monitoring, and maintenance. Then introduce a failure: a zone outage, lost route, storage bottleneck, expired certificate, or failed replica. Explain the evidence and recovery sequence.
AZ-120 preparation should distinguish Microsoft Azure capabilities from SAP support requirements. A technically possible VM, storage, clustering, or operating-system combination is not automatically a supported SAP design. Practice checking the dependency chain: SAP product and database support, operating system, Azure VM family, storage design, high-availability method, and any documented constraints. In scenario questions, “supported and operationally sustainable” is usually a stronger criterion than raw performance alone.
Regional recovery requires more than copying data. Define how application servers, databases, shared services, identity, DNS, network connectivity, secrets, and monitoring are recreated or failed over. State which data is replicated continuously, which configuration is redeployed, what sequence restores service, and how users are directed to the recovered environment. Recovery testing should verify both technical health and the business transaction path.
That architecture-and-operations loop is the core of useful AZ-120 preparation. The exam rewards people who can connect SAP requirements to Azure behavior, not people who simply recognize service names.
