Microsoft MS-900 Is Retired: Move to AB-900 Fundamentals

Microsoft retired MS-900, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, on March 31, 2026. The current beginner-level direction is AB-900: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals. Anyone using an old MS-900 course should therefore treat it as background for Microsoft 365 concepts, not as a complete certification course for a live exam.

Keep the Microsoft 365 foundation

MS-900 built useful vocabulary around cloud services, Microsoft 365 workloads, collaboration, security, compliance, licensing concepts, and support. Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, identity, and data protection still matter because AI-enabled Microsoft 365 administration depends on the same tenant, permission, and information foundations. The MS-900 retirement and AB-900 transition guide shows how that older material fits into the current path.

Remove obsolete exam preparation from the plan

Do not spend time memorizing the final MS-900 domain weights, old exam logistics, or questions written to a retired blueprint. Historical material can explain why Microsoft 365 services exist, but it should not decide what you study next. Your active checklist should come from AB-900 and current Microsoft 365 administration practice.

AB-900 adds an AI-enabled administration layer

The current fundamentals path expects familiarity with Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents in addition to the core services. That changes the beginner conversation. It is no longer enough to describe Teams, SharePoint, Exchange, Entra, and Purview as separate products. You also need to understand how identity, permissions, organizational data, governance, and administrative controls shape what Copilot and agents can access and do.

Data protection is now part of the AI foundation

Copilot quality and safety depend on the information available to the user. Overshared sites, weak permissions, poorly classified data, and unclear retention policies become AI-administration problems because AI can surface information at the speed of a prompt. Study identity and access, sensitivity and governance, and the relationship between content permissions and AI experiences together rather than as unrelated modules.

Learn the admin centers as an operating map

A strong fundamentals learner should know why different administration surfaces exist and which workload or control they govern. Build a simple tenant map: Microsoft 365 administration, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Purview. Then ask where you would investigate licensing, identity, collaboration settings, data protection, or AI-related governance. This gives product names an operational purpose.

Use one readiness scenario

Imagine an organization preparing to deploy Copilot to a department that stores sensitive customer documents in SharePoint and collaborates heavily in Teams. Before thinking about prompts, identify licensing, identity, permissions, site access, data classification, and governance concerns. Then decide what an administrator should review before enabling the experience. The AB-900 readiness guide provides a current checklist for this kind of scenario.

What to do with an old MS-900 course

Use it selectively. Keep cloud and Microsoft 365 service fundamentals, identity basics, collaboration concepts, and security/compliance vocabulary. Skip retired-exam tactics and supplement the course with current Copilot, agent, data-protection, and administration material. If you are beginning from zero, build directly around AB-900. If you already studied MS-900, transition rather than restart.

Use an administration-first learning checkpoint

Before moving on, take one common Microsoft 365 request and trace it across the tenant. For example, onboard a user who needs Teams collaboration, SharePoint access, and an AI-enabled experience without exposing unrelated sensitive content. Identify the license, identity, group and site permissions, data-governance controls, administrator surfaces, and verification evidence. If you can explain that chain without treating Copilot as a separate island, your old MS-900 foundation is becoming useful AB-900 knowledge.
