FortiSASE and SD-WAN 7.6 Core: Current Exam in a 2026 Transition

NSE5_SSE_AD-7.6 is the Fortinet NSE 5 FortiSASE and SD-WAN 7.6 Core Administrator exam. As of September 28, 2026 it is still available, but Fortinet lists a last delivery date of November 14, 2026 because the FortiSASE and SD-WAN 26 Core Administrator exam is already live. That makes this a transitional current exam: candidates can still schedule 7.6 for a limited period, but new long-term study plans should recognize that the product-version target is moving to 26.

The exam combines two operating models that increasingly converge: branch traffic steering through Secure SD-WAN and cloud-delivered access/security through FortiSASE. Core tasks include SD-WAN members and zones, performance SLAs, rules and routing, SASE deployment, user onboarding, secure internet and SaaS access, endpoint compliance and analytics. A strong foundation in WAN and SD-WAN fundamentals helps because the SASE layer does not remove the need to understand path quality and routing behavior.

Underlay quality still determines what SD-WAN can accomplish

SD-WAN can select among links, but it cannot create quality that the transports do not provide. Candidates should understand latency, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth and failure characteristics before configuring policies. A broadband circuit and an MPLS path may both be up while delivering very different application experience. Performance SLAs turn those differences into measurable inputs for path selection.

Build a lab with at least two members and deliberately degrade one path. Watch SLA state, session behavior and rule decisions as conditions change. This demonstrates why thresholds and recovery settings need to reflect application tolerance rather than arbitrary numbers.

Rules and routing must be read together

An SD-WAN rule does not operate in isolation from the routing table. The appliance still needs a viable path, and existing sessions may continue to use decisions made earlier. Candidates should be able to explain the order of route availability, rule matching, strategy selection and session creation without assuming that a visible rule automatically controls every packet.

Use routing fundamentals to validate the underlay. When traffic follows an unexpected member, confirm route reachability, rule order, SLA state and the current session. Clearing or recreating a session may be necessary during a controlled test, but it should not replace understanding why the original session chose its path.

FortiSASE onboarding is an identity and endpoint workflow

Remote users need to be associated with the correct organization and security policy before cloud-delivered controls can protect them. Candidate preparation should cover invitation or deployment methods, endpoint registration, identity, client connectivity and policy assignment. When onboarding fails, determine whether the problem is installation, authentication, registration, endpoint posture or reachability to the service.

The broader identity and endpoint security model helps separate these layers. A successfully installed client is not necessarily enrolled, an enrolled client is not necessarily compliant and a compliant client is not automatically authorized for every application. Troubleshoot the stage that actually failed.

Secure internet access should enforce policy close to the user

SIA applies security controls to user internet traffic without requiring every request to hairpin through a private data center. That can improve user experience, but the policy still needs clear identity, content inspection and logging. Candidates should understand how traffic reaches the SASE point of presence and which profile or rule is responsible for an allow, block or inspection action.

This is a practical expression of zero-trust principles: identity-aware access means location alone should not grant broad trust. User identity, endpoint state and requested destination all contribute to the decision. A useful test changes one factor at a time and verifies that the cloud policy responds predictably.

Secure SaaS access introduces application-specific context

SaaS traffic is still internet traffic, but organizations may need different inspection or control for sanctioned cloud applications. Candidates should recognize that application identification, user identity and security profiles can influence how SaaS sessions are handled. Policies should be specific enough to protect sensitive workflows without making every cloud application unusable.

When a SaaS application breaks after a security change, capture the exact domain, protocol and transaction that fails. Determine whether the issue is category, SSL inspection, application control, endpoint compliance or a network path. Broadly disabling security to restore one application creates a larger problem than the one being solved.

Integration with branch SD-WAN creates one distributed access architecture

A branch may use local FortiGate SD-WAN while remote users connect through FortiSASE, and the two environments still need consistent routing and security outcomes. Candidates should understand the high-level integration model, where branch traffic enters the SASE service and how centralized policy or management components support the deployment.

The current FortiManager 7.6 Administrator path is relevant because centralized configuration becomes more important as the number of branches grows. Templates and orchestration can reduce drift, but only if administrators still understand the routing and security behavior being automated.

Analytics should explain both performance and security

The same platform can generate evidence about path quality, SD-WAN rule behavior, user activity and security events. Candidates should be able to use logs and reports to answer a specific question rather than simply confirm that data exists. If users report poor performance, inspect SLA and session behavior; if security policy blocks traffic, correlate the action with the user, endpoint and destination.

The concepts in network observability are useful because SASE operations span client, cloud and branch. Preserve consistent timestamps and identifiers across those layers so one user session can be reconstructed. Visibility that cannot be correlated is much less useful during a time-sensitive incident.

The 26 Core exam keeps the same broad product family but may change version-specific behavior and terminology, so transition planning should compare objectives line by line rather than assume a simple rename. Preserve durable skills—routing, SLA reasoning, onboarding, SIA/SSA and analytics—then rebuild any lab steps that depend on the 7.6 interface or FortiSASE 25 behavior using the version actually scheduled for the exam.

The 7.6 exam is current but already in a controlled retirement window

This status deserves explicit treatment. Fortinet released the 26 Core Administrator exam on July 29, 2026 and will stop delivering the 7.6 Core exam after November 14, 2026. A candidate already prepared for 7.6 may still choose that version while it is available, but a new study plan should verify scheduling and compare the 26 objectives before investing heavily in version-specific details.

For broader progression, the approved inventory includes NSE 7 SASE 26 Architect, which represents a more advanced level rather than a direct replacement for the core exam. The older FortiSASE 25 Enterprise Administrator is historical context. Keep level and version distinctions clear so a transition note does not accidentally imply that an architect exam replaces a core administrator exam.

Operational ownership should also be clear across the cloud service, endpoint team and branch network team. If a remote user cannot reach a SaaS application, the incident may involve client registration, identity, SASE policy, internet path or the application itself. Define which logs each team can access and how a case is handed off. Shared identifiers such as username, endpoint ID and timestamp make that collaboration far more efficient.

Before exam day, verify the exact Pearson VUE version being scheduled. A transitional exam can remain bookable after its replacement appears, so the candidate should align labs, documentation and final review with the code on the appointment rather than with whichever course page was opened most recently.

Hands-on preparation should join FortiGate, endpoint and SASE evidence

The best lab is not three isolated products. Build a small branch with FortiGate, add an SD-WAN policy, onboard a user through FortiSASE and generate both normal and policy-violating traffic. Then use logs to trace the session from endpoint through the SASE service and branch path where applicable. This forces the candidate to connect configuration with observable behavior.

Use FortiOS 7.6 Administrator knowledge for the FortiGate side and the current NSE program for certification context. Because the exam is time-limited, current official objectives and the actual scheduled version should decide which product details receive final review.

Keep screenshots or notes of the scheduled code and version with the study plan so there is no ambiguity when the 7.6 retirement date approaches and both 7.6 and 26 materials are circulating at the same time.

Policy consistency matters when users and branches enter through different edges

One of the architectural challenges in SASE is that the same user may access resources from a laptop through FortiSASE, from a branch behind FortiGate, or while moving between locations. Security intent should remain understandable across those paths even when enforcement points differ. Candidates should know which controls live in FortiSASE, which live on FortiGate, and how identity, endpoint posture, routing and security profiles combine to produce the final decision.

A strong validation method uses one application and one user across multiple access paths. Confirm that the user is authenticated consistently, that compliance or security policy is applied as intended, and that logs can still be correlated. If one path receives materially different treatment, determine whether the difference is intentional architecture or configuration drift. That systems view is more useful than memorizing separate screens for branch and remote access.
