APMG International accredits a large portfolio of professional certification schemes, but two paths are especially useful for understanding how its qualifications work: Agile Project Management (AgilePM) and Change Management. They address different dimensions of organizational delivery. AgilePM provides a structured approach for leading projects in an agile environment, while Change Management focuses on the people, adoption, communication and sustained behavioral change required for an initiative to produce real outcomes. Professionals working in transformation often need both kinds of capability even though the certifications remain separate.
In 2026, AgilePM is firmly on version 3. APMG's current material emphasizes a shift toward value, project leadership, Scrum as the product-delivery engine, improved guidance for multi-team projects and stronger risk management. Change Management is also on its updated version 3 syllabus, aligned to the Change Management Institute's body of knowledge. Candidates should therefore avoid preparation material built around older versions unless they are using it only for general concepts. The exam, reference guide and accredited training should all match the current scheme.
AgilePM Foundation establishes the vocabulary, principles, lifecycle, roles and practices of the framework. Version 3 keeps the idea that agile delivery still needs clear business direction, governance and decision rights, but it places more emphasis on value and leadership and explicitly embraces Scrum as a product-delivery engine. That makes the scheme useful in organizations that want iterative delivery without giving up the controls required for budgets, accountability, architecture or regulated environments.
Foundation is a knowledge-level qualification. APMG currently describes the exam as 50 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, with 30 marks required to pass. The strongest preparation does more than memorize roles and terms: candidates should be able to explain how prioritization, timeboxing, iterative development, stakeholder collaboration and governance reinforce one another. Understanding agile and waterfall delivery helps explain why the framework behaves differently from a predictive lifecycle.
AgilePM is especially valuable in hybrid organizations. Many enterprises still have fixed governance gates, funding cycles and external dependencies even when delivery teams work iteratively. The framework gives candidates a way to think about that tension. The goal is not to label everything agile, but to preserve enough structure for business control while allowing teams to learn, prioritize and deliver incrementally.
AgilePM Practitioner is intended to test whether a candidate can apply and tailor the framework to a real project scenario. APMG's current exam information describes an objective examination with four questions worth 15 points each, a 50 percent pass mark and two hours of testing with access to the official handbook. That open-book format does not make the exam easy: the challenge is deciding which principle, role or technique fits the situation, not locating a definition.
Candidates moving to Practitioner should therefore study through scenarios. What happens when a business sponsor wants to change priorities late? How should the team protect quality while flexing scope? Which decisions belong with the project leadership and which belong with the product-delivery team? How should multiple teams coordinate when they share dependencies? These questions force the framework to operate as a decision model rather than a glossary.
This is also where broader delivery context matters. A candidate who understands predictive, agile and hybrid delivery can recognize when an organization needs different controls around different parts of the same initiative. AgilePM does not remove governance; it changes how planning, commitment and feedback work inside that governance.
Change Management Foundation is designed for people involved in organizational change who need a common language for how individuals, teams and organizations respond to transition. The subject is wider than communication. It includes stakeholder analysis, change impact, resistance, learning, motivation, leadership, engagement and the mechanisms that help a new way of working become sustainable.
The distinction from project management is important. A project can deliver a new platform on time while the organization fails to adopt it; a change program can generate enthusiasm while the technical solution remains incomplete. Change Management helps candidates understand adoption as a workstream with its own evidence, plans and interventions. That makes the credential relevant to change managers, project managers, HR and learning professionals, communications teams, product leaders and managers responsible for implementing new operating models.
Practitioner builds on Foundation and expects the candidate to use the concepts in realistic situations. APMG describes Foundation as a prerequisite for Practitioner. The more advanced material includes sustaining momentum, identifying learning needs, coaching, handling conflict and designing change processes. The qualification is therefore most valuable when the learner can connect those ideas to an active transformation rather than studying them as abstract models.
Large transformations rarely fail for only one reason. Technology, process, governance, skills, incentives and behavior interact. Agile delivery can expose problems early, but it cannot by itself create stakeholder commitment. Change techniques can improve readiness, but they cannot compensate for weak product decisions or unclear accountability. Professionals who understand both disciplines can identify whether a problem is fundamentally about delivery mechanics, adoption, or the relationship between the two.
That overlap is easier to see when an agile project manager's responsibilities are considered alongside program governance. A project leader needs to know how work is governed and delivered, while a change leader needs to know when governance decisions affect stakeholders, timing and adoption.
In practice, the boundary between the roles is negotiated. A product or project team may own delivery milestones; a change team may own stakeholder readiness, communications and learning; operational leaders may own adoption after go-live. Certification study is useful when it improves those handoffs. Candidates should therefore practice translating framework concepts into responsibilities, evidence and decision rights rather than assuming the credential will dictate one universal organization chart.
APMG's current Change Management scheme distinguishes Foundation from Registered Practitioner status. Foundation does not expire, while candidates who pass Practitioner are recognized as Registered Practitioners for five years. APMG states that maintaining that status requires passing a Change Management Re-Registration examination within three to five years after the initial or previous Practitioner certification. AgilePM also provides a Practitioner re-certification path under the current scheme.
That makes recertification planning part of the credential lifecycle for practitioners. A candidate should record the version studied, certification date and future re-registration requirement instead of assuming the badge is permanent. This is particularly important in change and agile disciplines because the schemes themselves evolve as delivery practice changes.
Maintenance also has an editorial lesson for preparation: current terminology matters. AgilePM v3 is not simply a renamed v2. APMG highlights changes in value orientation, leadership, Scrum integration, multi-team guidance and risk. Change Management v3 was updated to reflect a more mature discipline and a world in which continuous change is common. Candidates should therefore verify that training providers and self-study materials explicitly reference the current version.
AgilePM is the better first choice when the problem is how to organize and lead project delivery in an agile environment. Change Management is the stronger first choice when the problem is adoption, stakeholder movement and sustaining new behavior. Professionals who work across transformation may eventually benefit from both, but the sequence should follow the work rather than an arbitrary certification ladder.
The same principle applies across APMG's wider catalog. APMG accredits many frameworks for project, program, risk, service, cyber and transformation disciplines. Their value comes from giving teams a shared method and vocabulary. A credential is strongest when the candidate can point to the decisions it improves: prioritization, governance, stakeholder engagement, learning, risk, adoption or delivery control.
For study, that means moving from definitions to situations as quickly as possible. Foundation-level learning establishes the map; Practitioner-level learning tests whether the candidate can navigate the map under constraints. When preparation is built around realistic decisions, APMG certification becomes a way to sharpen professional judgment rather than merely a test of framework recall.
Another useful distinction is between framework knowledge and organizational authority. AgilePM can define roles and decision patterns, but it cannot give a project leader authority the organization has not delegated. Change Management can provide stakeholder and adoption tools, but it cannot make a business owner accountable for a benefit they do not own. Candidates should therefore practice identifying where a framework ends and governance begins. In real transformation work, many failures blamed on method are actually failures of sponsorship, decision rights or ownership.
That boundary becomes especially important when several methods coexist. A technology program might use Scrum inside product teams, AgilePM at the project layer, portfolio governance above the project and Change Management across affected business units. The methods do not need to compete if each solves a different problem. The professional skill is knowing which layer is responsible for value, delivery, risk, adoption and benefit realization, then making the handoffs explicit enough that issues do not fall between teams.
Candidates should also verify the exact exam level before buying study material. Foundation and Practitioner assessments test different abilities, and APMG's current public materials explicitly reference version 3 for both AgilePM and Change Management. A book that teaches sound agile or change ideas can still be poor exam preparation if its role names, lifecycle or syllabus belong to an older scheme. Version control is therefore part of responsible certification planning, especially during the years immediately after a major framework update.
