CompTIA Data+ DA0-002 is the current V2 Data+ exam and is designed for practitioners who work with data acquisition, preparation, analysis, visualization, reporting, and governance. The blueprint is balanced across five domains: data concepts and environments, data acquisition and preparation, data analysis, visualization and reporting, and data governance. That structure reflects the real analyst workflow. A chart is only as trustworthy as the data pipeline behind it, and a statistical result is only useful when the business question, assumptions, and data quality are understood.
DA0-002 is not a database-administration exam and it is not an advanced data-science credential. It sits in the middle: candidates should be comfortable with databases and analytical tools, basic statistics, data visualization, and the process of translating a stakeholder question into an evidence-based result. The data analyst skill set is a useful frame because it connects SQL, modeling, visualization, and communication instead of treating them as separate study subjects.
The V2 objectives also acknowledge AI concepts and automation in modern analytics. That does not mean every analyst must become a machine-learning engineer. It means analysts need to understand where generative AI, predictive methods, automation, and cloud data services can help—and where they introduce quality, privacy, governance, or reproducibility concerns. A strong DA0-002 candidate can explain how a result was produced and what limitations a decision-maker should know before acting on it.
Analysts are often given requests such as “show churn,” “explain why revenue fell,” or “build a dashboard.” Those are not yet complete analytical questions. Clarify the decision the stakeholder is trying to make, the population of interest, the time period, the definitions of key measures, and what outcome would change an action. A technically correct calculation can still be useless if it answers the wrong business question.
Good requirements also expose data gaps early. If the business wants customer profitability but costs are recorded only at product level, the analysis needs an allocation assumption. If the question compares two time periods but a system migration changed how events were logged, the numbers may not be directly comparable. Data+ preparation should reward this habit of stating assumptions because analytical integrity begins before the first query runs.
Relational databases, data warehouses, data lakes, lakehouses, files, APIs, and cloud platforms store and expose data differently. An analyst should understand schema, keys, normalization, structured versus semi-structured data, and the difference between operational and analytical workloads. The goal is not to administer every platform but to know where data lives, how it can be queried, and what transformations are required before analysis.
SQL remains a durable skill because so much business data is relational. Joins, filters, aggregates, grouping, subqueries, and window logic allow analysts to build transparent calculations close to the source. The broader SQL skill set is useful when practicing DA0-002 because it forces you to think about row grain and relationships. Many analytical errors come from joining at the wrong level and silently duplicating records.
Raw data often contains missing values, inconsistent types, duplicates, malformed records, outliers, stale fields, and conflicting definitions. Preparation is not a one-time “cleaning” button. It includes profiling, validation, transformation, standardization, deduplication, enrichment, and documenting what changed. The treatment should depend on the question: removing an outlier may be appropriate in one analysis and destroy the most important signal in another. The principles in data quality help separate dimensions such as completeness, accuracy, consistency, validity, uniqueness, and timeliness. Practice writing quality checks before analysis. For example, verify expected row counts, key uniqueness, allowed values, date ranges, null rates, and reconciliation totals. Automated checks make a pipeline more trustworthy because the analyst is warned when the data distribution changes unexpectedly.
Descriptive statistics summarize what happened; inferential methods estimate what may be true beyond the sample; predictive techniques estimate future or unknown outcomes; prescriptive analysis supports action choices. Candidates should understand measures of center and spread, correlation, sampling, probability, hypothesis testing, confidence, and common model-evaluation ideas at the level needed to select and interpret a method. The formula matters less than knowing what question the method can legitimately answer.
Correlation deserves special caution because a strong relationship does not prove causation. Confounding variables, selection bias, seasonality, and data leakage can create convincing but misleading patterns. Build small examples where a metric rises for a reason unrelated to the variable being investigated. That practice develops the habit of challenging the story that a chart appears to tell, which is essential when stakeholders are eager for a simple explanation.
A useful way to practice method selection is to take the same business question and solve it at several levels of sophistication. Start with a descriptive summary, then add segmentation, test whether an apparent difference is likely to be meaningful, and finally consider whether a predictive approach would actually improve the decision. Record what assumptions each step adds. This prevents the common mistake of choosing a more complex technique simply because the tool can run it. DA0-002 rewards an analyst who can match technique to evidence, explain the tradeoff, and recognize when the data is too weak to support a stronger claim.
A good chart is selected for the analytical task. Bar charts support categorical comparison, lines reveal change over time, scatter plots expose relationships, histograms show distributions, and tables provide precise values when the audience needs detail. Decorative complexity can hide rather than clarify. Color, sorting, scale, labels, and aggregation should make the intended comparison obvious without manipulating perception.
Communication also means showing uncertainty and context. If a forecast has a confidence interval, do not present a single line as certainty. If a dashboard metric depends on a filter or business rule, make that visible. Storytelling should guide attention from question to evidence to implication, not force the audience toward a conclusion the data cannot support. The analyst’s credibility depends on making limits as understandable as the headline result.
Reporting quality also depends on metric design. A dashboard should distinguish counts from rates, totals from averages, and leading indicators from lagging outcomes. When a measure is normalized by customer, transaction, or time period, state that denominator clearly so viewers do not compare unlike quantities. Build one version of a dashboard for an operational audience and another for executives; the underlying data can remain the same while the level of detail, exception handling, and callouts change. That exercise teaches that visualization is not decoration after analysis—it is part of how analytical meaning is preserved.
Data governance covers ownership, stewardship, classification, access, quality, lineage, retention, privacy, and compliance. Analysts may not write corporate policy, but they work inside it. A dashboard built from sensitive customer data needs appropriate access controls. A model trained on historical data needs provenance. A metric used for executive reporting should have a defined owner and calculation so different teams do not publish incompatible versions of “revenue” or “active customer.”
The data governance, catalogs, and lineage concepts are practical because they answer basic questions: what does this field mean, where did it come from, who is responsible for it, and who may use it? When studying, take one analysis and trace every important field back to its source. If you cannot explain the lineage, you cannot fully defend the result.
Generative AI can draft SQL, summarize data, explain code, or propose visualizations, while automation can refresh reports and validate pipelines. These are useful accelerators, but analysts remain responsible for correctness. Generated queries can use the wrong grain, invent columns, or expose sensitive data. Summaries can overstate findings. Automation can repeat a flawed transformation faster and more consistently than a human would.
The AI and machine-learning vocabulary helps DA0-002 candidates understand where advanced techniques fit without turning the exam into a machine-learning specialty. Use AI output as a hypothesis or draft that must be checked against source data, business definitions, and reproducible logic. If another analyst cannot rerun the work and reach the same result, the workflow is not yet mature.
Choose a realistic public data set and keep using it throughout preparation. Load it into a database or notebook, profile it, clean it, document quality issues, query it with SQL, calculate descriptive statistics, build several visualizations, and write a short stakeholder summary. Then deliberately introduce bad data and see whether your checks catch it. This creates continuity across domains and exposes where you understand only the definition rather than the practice.
Finally, connect Data+ to the broader CompTIA data path without confusing the roles. DataSys+ goes deeper into database deployment and operations, while DY0-001 targets expert data-science and AI work under the current DataAI name. DA0-002 is valuable because it builds the analytical middle layer: prepare data carefully, choose defensible methods, communicate clearly, and govern the result.
