Microsoft AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, is currently a beta exam for Microsoft 365 Certified: AI Services Administrator Associate. Microsoft’s July 2026 blueprint makes the role significantly broader than a basic Copilot administrator: candidates configure and manage Microsoft 365 tenants and workloads, govern identity and data, secure collaboration, manage Copilot and agents, and monitor AI services at enterprise scale. Because the exam is still beta, candidates should recheck Microsoft’s current exam page before scheduling and should expect the certification content to continue evolving.
The exam’s largest domain is governance and security for Microsoft 365 tenants and workloads, followed closely by management and security of AI services; tenant and workload configuration is smaller but foundational. That weighting reflects reality. Copilot and agents inherit the organization’s identity, permissions, content, collaboration, and compliance posture. An administrator cannot make AI safe by configuring only AI settings if SharePoint is overshared, privileged roles are uncontrolled, authentication is weak, or sensitive data is poorly classified.
AB-650 should be studied as an advanced operational step beyond the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals level. The Microsoft certification inventory also contains the established Microsoft 365 administration paths, but AB-650 adds AI-specific licensing, agent identities, agent registry controls, Copilot data readiness, AI-service cost monitoring, and governance. The best preparation environment is a lab tenant where identity, collaboration, Purview, Defender, Copilot, and agent configuration can be observed as one system.
Domains, organization settings, licenses, branding, service health, network connectivity, and core workloads still matter because AI services operate inside the tenant rather than beside it. Group-based licensing, pay-as-you-go services, and workload configuration can produce very different access patterns. Administrators should be able to explain not just how to assign a license but how the assignment changes a user’s available experiences and how to verify that service health or connectivity is not the real reason a feature appears unavailable.
Create a lab matrix with three user personas, two groups, and several service licenses. Apply licensing through both direct and group-based methods, then trace effective access. Add a service-health incident and a network constraint to the troubleshooting scenario. The goal is to learn to separate entitlement, configuration, service, and connectivity problems rather than assuming every missing Copilot feature is a licensing issue.
Exchange mailboxes, Teams, SharePoint sites, OneDrive, search, and meeting settings are not merely background services. They supply the communications, files, permissions, and collaboration context that Copilot and agents can use. Administrators need to understand site permissions, Teams membership, transcription settings, shared mailboxes, search configuration, and site exclusions because these settings affect what users and AI experiences can discover or act upon.
Choose one department and map its mailboxes, Teams, SharePoint sites, and major content stores. Identify which resources should be visible to all employees, which are departmental, and which contain restricted information. Then ask how a Copilot prompt from a user in that department could surface each resource. This turns abstract 'data readiness' into a concrete permissions and content-governance problem.
AB-650 includes Microsoft Entra users, groups, guest access, roles, administrative units, authentication, Conditional Access, Password Protection, self-service password reset, and Privileged Identity Management, all within a broader identity governance lifecycle. AI services increase the importance of these controls because an agent or Copilot experience can amplify the reach of a compromised identity. Administrative roles should be just-in-time where practical, external access should be deliberate, and authentication policies should reflect risk rather than convenience.
Build a role review for a hypothetical tenant. Separate routine user administration, SharePoint administration, security operations, compliance, and AI-service management. Decide which roles can be eligible through PIM, which tasks need approval, and which emergency path exists for lockout. Then test a Conditional Access policy in report-only or a safe lab context before enforcement. Scenario thinking is more valuable than memorizing every role name.
Email and collaboration threats can compromise identities, seed malicious content, and influence downstream work. AB-650 therefore includes alerts, threat policies, investigation, response, and attack simulation in Defender for Office 365. An AI-enabled workplace does not remove traditional threat-defense responsibilities; it increases the importance of knowing whether content and accounts can be trusted before automation relies on them.
Trace a phishing incident from initial message through user interaction, alert generation, investigation, and remediation. Then consider the AI consequences: could compromised content appear in search or grounding, could the account access Copilot, and should agent access be suspended while the incident is investigated? This connects security operations to AI administration rather than treating them as separate exam topics.
Data Loss Prevention, sensitivity labels, retention, data lifecycle management, Compliance Manager, and Data Security Posture Management for AI help administrators understand and constrain how information is stored, shared, and used. Oversharing is particularly important because Copilot generally respects existing permissions; if permissions are too broad, AI can make the underlying exposure easier to discover. Security improves when organizations correct access and classification at the source instead of attempting to hide risky content from AI after the fact.
Create a sample site with public, internal, and restricted documents and apply a simple classification model. Decide where DLP should block an action, where a sensitivity label should protect the content, and where retention requirements apply. Then test the access as multiple users before considering Copilot readiness. This sequence reinforces the principle that AI governance begins with trustworthy identity and data controls.
AB-650 expects administrators to assess readiness, identify oversharing or compliance issues, configure Copilot settings, manage search behavior, control third-party AI providers, and work with connectors. Readiness is not a one-time checkbox. Content changes, permissions drift, new connectors appear, and organizational policy evolves. Administrators need recurring signals that show whether the environment remains safe and useful.
Build a readiness worksheet that includes licensing, identity, SharePoint permissions, sensitive-data exposure, search, connectors, release preferences, user adoption, support ownership, and incident response. Assign an owner and evidence source to each item. A checklist becomes operationally valuable when every control can be verified and revisited rather than simply marked complete during rollout.
Microsoft’s current blueprint includes lifecycle management for agent identities, agent owners, access packages, Conditional Access, agent types, sharing, templates, and the agent registry. Administrators must know which agents exist, who owns them, who can use them, what tools they can call, and whether they remain compliant. The broader agentic AI security model applies because an agent can be both a software asset and an acting identity.
Define an onboarding and offboarding process for agents. Require an owner, business purpose, data classification, approved tools, user population, authentication pattern, review date, and monitoring plan. Then decide what happens when the owner leaves the company or the agent’s underlying connector becomes risky. Lifecycle governance prevents abandoned agents from becoming permanent unowned privileges.
AB-650 includes Copilot usage reports, workload-level adoption, service health, AI-service cost, and the Copilot Control System. Mature monitoring distinguishes healthy adoption from waste or risky behavior. Low usage may indicate poor training, irrelevant licensing, or technical barriers; high usage may still be problematic if data exposure or runaway consumption is present. Administrators need enough business context to interpret what the metrics mean.
Combine traditional service monitoring with AI observability concepts. Define what should trigger investigation: sudden cost growth, abnormal agent tool use, a drop in successful sessions, repeated policy violations, or a service incident affecting a critical workload. Then identify which team owns the response. Monitoring is useful only when a signal maps to an operational decision.
Final preparation should avoid studying each admin center in isolation. Build a scenario where a department receives Copilot licenses and access to an approved agent. Configure identity, groups, SharePoint permissions, sensitivity labels, workload access, agent ownership, and monitoring. Then introduce a risky guest account, an overshared site, and an agent that requests a high-privilege tool. Decide which control should detect or prevent each problem.
Use the Microsoft certifications to understand where AB-650 fits among Microsoft 365, security, and AI roles, but keep the lab focused on administration. If you can trace a user or agent from identity through permissions, content, policy, AI access, telemetry, and incident response, you have the integrated operational model this beta exam is testing.
Microsoft Graph PowerShell is also worth practicing as an administrative interface rather than treating it as an optional scripting detail. Large tenants eventually need repeatable bulk changes, evidence collection, and configuration checks that are inefficient to perform manually. A useful lab is to export users or groups, identify a target population, make a controlled change in a test tenant, and then verify the result independently. The important skill is not memorizing cmdlets; it is understanding object identity, permissions, scopes, error handling, and how scripted administration fits change control.
Backup and recovery deserve the same operational mindset. Microsoft 365 Backup can protect supported workloads, but recovery planning begins with business requirements: which data is critical, how quickly it must be restored, who can authorize recovery, and how restored content is validated. In an AI-enabled tenant, recovery also affects grounding and search because restored or duplicated content can change what users and agents discover. Administrators should think through the post-restore state instead of assuming that a successful restore automatically returns the environment to a trustworthy operating condition.
