Microsoft AB-900 is the exam for Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals. It is a beginner-level administration credential that connects core Microsoft 365 services, identity and security, data protection and governance, and the basic administration of Copilot and agents. Microsoft has already published an upcoming English-language blueprint update for October 14, 2026. Candidates testing before that date should follow the pre-update scope shown by Microsoft and recheck the official study guide if their exam date is on or after October 14.
The exam is not a pure Copilot feature test. The high-level assessed areas cover Microsoft 365 objects and services, data protection and governance for Microsoft 365 and Copilot, and basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents. That structure makes sense because AI experiences inherit the tenant’s users, groups, permissions, sites, mailboxes, policies, and data. A candidate who knows prompts but cannot explain SharePoint permissions, Conditional Access, sensitivity labels, or agent approval is missing the administrative foundation.
Use the Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals credential page as the internal certification context and the AB-900 skills and study priorities to organize study. The exam sits within the wider Microsoft certification ecosystem and can also serve as a foundation for more advanced Microsoft 365 and AI administration roles, but its own level remains conceptual and operational rather than architect-level.
Users, groups, mailboxes, sites, libraries, teams, channels, and organization settings are fundamental because they determine where information lives and who can reach it. Candidates should recognize which admin center manages which kind of object and how licenses affect access. A recurring scenario pattern is likely to present a requirement and ask which object or administrative surface should be used rather than asking for a long configuration procedure.
Review Microsoft 365 service fundamentals for AB-900 by mapping five common tasks: create a shared mailbox, change a SharePoint site permission, manage a team, review organization settings, and assign a license. For each task, identify the object, admin surface, and downstream impact. This creates a mental model that remains useful when Copilot is introduced on top.
Authentication establishes who a user is; authorization determines what that identity is allowed to access. Microsoft Entra ID provides the identity layer, while Conditional Access, multifactor authentication, roles, groups, and resource permissions help control access. Single sign-on improves user experience but does not replace strong authentication or authorization. Candidates should be able to distinguish these ideas in scenarios where a user can sign in successfully but still should not reach a resource.
The approved identity and permissions material can help connect Entra ID, Conditional Access, SSO, and permissions. Create a simple scenario with a normal employee, external guest, and privileged administrator. Decide how each authenticates and which resources each can access. Then add a risky sign-in signal and ask which control should respond.
Zero Trust is often summarized as verify explicitly, use least privilege, and assume breach. For AB-900, the important part is applying those principles to everyday administration. Conditional Access can require stronger authentication based on context, privileged roles should be tightly controlled, and users should not receive broad access simply because they are inside the organization. Microsoft Defender XDR and identity signals add detection and response capabilities around that access model.
Take a scenario where an administrator wants to exempt all executives from MFA because they travel frequently. Apply Zero Trust reasoning instead: travel increases context variability, so the solution should verify identity appropriately rather than weaken controls. Exam questions often become easier when you identify the underlying principle before choosing the feature.
AB-900 expects conceptual understanding of Information Protection, Data Loss Prevention, Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Data Lifecycle Management, Compliance Manager, eDiscovery, and related tools. Candidates do not need to become compliance specialists, but they should know what kind of problem each capability addresses. Sensitivity labels classify and protect content; DLP can prevent inappropriate movement of sensitive information; retention governs how long content is kept; investigation tools help find and review evidence.
Create a table of business scenarios rather than memorizing product names. Examples might include blocking credit-card data from leaving the organization, marking a document confidential, retaining financial records, investigating risky insider behavior, and searching for content in a legal matter. Map each scenario to the relevant Purview capability and explain why a neighboring feature is not the best fit.
Microsoft 365 Copilot grounds responses in organizational context that the user is permitted to access. That makes oversharing a major readiness problem. AI can make information easier to discover without changing the underlying permission. Administrators should understand data access governance, SharePoint permissions, restricted access controls, and the importance of correcting overly broad access before large-scale Copilot deployment.
Run a conceptual permission audit of a SharePoint site. Ask who currently has access, whether membership reflects current job needs, and whether sensitive folders rely on inherited permissions that are too broad. Then consider what changes when users can query the environment conversationally. The correct security response is to fix the source permissions and governance, not to assume Copilot can compensate for weak access design.
Fundamentals-level administrators should understand the difference between monthly licensing and pay-as-you-go scenarios, how licenses are assigned, which tenant settings influence Copilot experiences, and where usage or adoption can be monitored. They should also recognize specialized experiences such as Researcher and Analyst and understand that feature availability can depend on licensing, policy, and rollout state.
Build a troubleshooting decision tree for a user who says 'Copilot is missing.' Check license, group assignment, tenant policy, service health, app context, and whether the feature is available for that user. This prevents the common administrative mistake of changing multiple settings before identifying which layer actually caused the problem.
Custom agents expand the administrative surface because users can create experiences that connect to knowledge and sometimes actions. Review AI agent fundamentals to understand why access and ownership matter. AB-900 candidates should know that administrators may need to control who can use agents, approve or reject deployment, and monitor usage or lifecycle signals through relevant Microsoft 365 and Power Platform administration surfaces.
Imagine a department creates an agent for internal policy questions. Define who owns it, which users can access it, which knowledge source it uses, and what approval should occur before broad deployment. Then decide what should happen if the owner leaves. This simple lifecycle scenario reinforces that an agent is an organizational asset, not merely a saved prompt.
Copilot and agents can create errors, surface sensitive information within permitted access, or encourage users to rely on generated output without verification. Administrators should understand responsible AI principles and recognize that data governance, identity, policy, training, and monitoring all contribute to safe use. The role is not to review every prompt, but to establish a controlled environment in which users can work productively.
The agentic AI security material goes beyond AB-900 depth, but it is useful for understanding why excessive permissions and untrusted instructions become important as agents gain tools. At the fundamentals level, focus on least privilege, approved data sources, access controls, and the need to keep humans accountable for consequential decisions.
Microsoft admin interfaces evolve quickly, which is one reason fundamentals exams emphasize concepts and appropriate controls. For each study objective, ask what object is being managed, what risk or business requirement exists, and which service owns the control. This approach remains useful even when a menu label moves. It also helps with elimination because incorrect options often belong to the wrong administrative layer.
Finish with a tenant walkthrough that starts with a new employee. Assign identity and licenses, place the user in groups, grant access to Teams and SharePoint, apply data-protection expectations, enable an appropriate Copilot experience, and allow access to one approved agent. Then explain how you would investigate a risky sign-in, overshared file, missing Copilot feature, or unapproved agent. That end-to-end mental model is a strong foundation for AB-900.
Audit logs and administrative evidence tie many AB-900 concepts together. When a setting changes, an agent is approved, access is modified, or a user reports unexpected behavior, the administrator needs to know where activity can be reviewed and which identity performed the action. You do not need forensic-specialist depth for a fundamentals exam, but you should recognize that Microsoft 365 administration is accountable work. Practice turning a vague report such as “someone changed access” into concrete questions: which object changed, when, by whom, through which service, and what evidence can confirm the sequence.
It is also useful to separate feature availability from safe enablement. A tenant may technically support a Copilot or agent capability before the organization has completed permissions review, data classification, user guidance, or support planning. Fundamentals-level administration includes understanding that enabling a feature is an organizational decision, not just a switch. When two answers both appear technically possible, the option that preserves least privilege, governance, and a manageable support model is usually the stronger administrative choice.
Finally, practice explaining administrative choices in plain language. If you can tell a colleague why a group, label, Conditional Access policy, or agent approval is needed without relying on product jargon, you probably understand the control. That clarity is useful both for scenario questions and for real support conversations with users who only see the effect of a policy.
